Crackers or Cornbread? - Fri, 02/3/06 6:36 PM

Or I guess any other kind of bread. I prefer a thick peace of Northern-style sweet cornbread dripping with butter, especially if the chili (w/beans & meat) is hot! (Washed down with cold milk)!

With my chili, I like a healthy dose of diced onions, little sharp cheddar and a cold brew...
Oh ya, no crackers or cornbread needed... Unless the chili is that bad that it needs some doctoring..

I love sweet cornbread with chili. Somehow, it provides a nice contrast to the spicy chili.

Hello All,
I prefer a just warmed, flour tortilla with chili. If not that, then a
home-made (and I mean, home-made) roll or bread.
Have put in tortilla chips (not doritos type, but plain with no spices on them)
and they worked find. Crackers only in Wendy's chili.
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

Premium brand multigrain saltines-- on the side, not in the chili. And a Diet Coke with lots of ice.

I have always enjoyed my chili with Tennessee fried cornbread made with onions, peppers, Mexican corn, small amount of sugar, couple of eggs, canola oil and some milk. I cook it in a cast iron preheated pan with oil in it. I baked the corn bread at 450F for about 45 minutes. I like it dark and with a thick crust.

It comes out with a thick crust and I cover it with chili when available. No chili? No problems as I cover it with butter and enjoy the bread.

For Gods sake no darn milk with your chili!!! What is wrong with you people? When preparing my chili I always use a can of beer as a primary ingredient (instead of water). If you have not tried beer you should when you prepare your next batch. You will love it. Use a little bit of Texas Pete hot sauce and top it off with plenty of ice cold beer & you are in chili heaven.

I prefer crackers with my chili. It it's soupy, I'll crumble the crackers into it. Of course, if it's soupy someone else made it.

Oh, how wonderful it is to be watching the snow come down hard. I just hope it keeps coming.

Milk with pizza? What the hells the matter with you. Everyone knows that the real beverage of choice with pizza is Jim Beam whiskey!

Not to put to fine a point on it, but if one must drink a spiritous beverage other than beer with a tomato pie then Jim Beam cannot possibly be the choice of a discriminating person.

Reminds me of a funny scene in "City Slickers." There's the two brothers who own an ice cream company, and one brother brags that his brother has a genius for saying which ice cream should serve as the dessert for which entree.

"OK," says one of the dudes, "Hot Dogs and Beans."

Says the the brother, "That's easy, one scoop vanilla, one scoop chocolate."

Crystal says, "Anyone can do that."
.......
I always thought Diet Coke goes best with Pizza.

Saltines OR corn bread (no sugar ever!) w/ green chili, add'l powdered buttermilk, cheddar, & an egg. But I drink diet soda any time I'm not drinking Wild Turkey 101. Or milk.

(Later) P. S. Thank you, Tommy2dogs. My first choice is always oyster crackers. I guess they're right: the mind is the second thing to go!

For me it depends on the type of Chili. Texas style which is very thick I always have a hunk of jalapeno corn bread. But my favorite is soup type Chili *(not sure if this is midwest, northeast or what) I like with OTC type oyster crackers or crumbled saltines in a pinch. Also add tobasco and hot pepper vinegar. To me, (just my opinion)
cheese/onions or sour cream is Sacrilege.

I remember as a kid, a major achievement was when I finally could crunch two OTCs together and make them break.... All the grownups and big kids could do that.

I rarely have crackers with chili or soup. I love cornbread and that is my favorite side for chili. As for beverage, depends on my mood. My favorites are a cold beer or ice tea, although lately, I seem to be drinking Woodchuck Amber Draft Cider instead of beer. They also make a dark and dry version I like.

Saltine crackers along side chili with beans.

Ham and beans with cornbread.

Cornbread is good with chili too, but crackers is no choice for HamBeans. This hoosier will take beer with chili for supper, but milk for lunch thank you.

Hi all

All this sounds so tasty to me, chili is a fav in my house although to tell the truth I have other interests!
My dad used to make good chili and serve it on top of rice with saltines, like I said, chili was not an intrest of mine so I do not remember if it was a good thing...

I like corn bread with chili, but I also like a cracker or oyster cracker, or even tortilla chips or fritos if I have to. Something crunchy to balance the soft chili texture.

(beer in chili has been debated in the past, and I must say that even when I used a nice dark or amber beer, the cooked beer smell wasn't so pleasant and the chili didn't have the beer flavor the way I thought it would, so I no longer use beer.)

Crackers or cornbread? Is that it? I think your selling this miraculous dish short. How about:
Over rice, mashed potatoes, grits or beans, mixed with mac and cheese and baked, over nachos, or fries with cheese, over any style eggs or wrapped in a tortilla with frijoles for breakfast. With cornbread? yes! both northern or southern, hey the wars over. Crackers? Sure! Saltines, ritz, oysters, cheese-its, whatever's on hand.
Top it with jalapenos; pickled or straight, onions; sweet, red, or yellow, avocado, cheese any flavor, fried tortilla strips, hot sauce of any kind. Shrimp salad, shrimp kebab, shrimp... oops think I'm coming unhinged. Better head home for a bowl of blessedness as Will Rogers used to call it. HHmmm, what to have with it. I think just a bowl.

How about something my Virginia ancestors made. Cornmeal crackers. If anyone wants the recipe let me know. They go great with chili, but make sure the beans are on the side. Cheddar on the side. Chopped up onions on the side. Slaw on the side. And lots and lots of cold beer, on the side, in the middle and down the hatch. Be sure it ain't good beer---no Heiniken or Sam Adams, just good old Rollin' Rock is fine with me. Or the other brews I started out with---Schaeffer (the one beer to have when your havin' more than one) and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Ole !!!

Crackers for me. While I like cornbread, and sweet cornbread (there, I said it), it gets to be a little much with chili.

Not just crackers, but oyster crackers go best with chili IMHO.

i like Sweet cornbread, savory cornbread, spicy cornbread and everything/anything cornbread with chili.
i also like rice with chili.
Sometimes tortillas.
i happen to like saltinecrackers quite a bit so i'd prob. like that in Chili too. i do know i like the litte oyster crackers!
B.T.W. For the superbowl on Sunday,my friend made some venison chili that was pretty spicy and i made some cornbread.. ...actually 2 kinds for the party. one that was sweet with more sugar in the batter, and one that had way less (hardly any) sugar and jalapenos and minced red and orange peppers . People at the party ate almost all of both kinds up! ( & commented it was good! yea! )
