I'm sure most of us have heard jokes about it but call me naive I didn't know people ACTUALLY ate horse meat.

People have been eating horse meat for many years. It's quite popular in some areas of Europe, especially in France. It's quite good, some prefer it to beef. I think its tastier than beef. It was quite common in the United States during War-Two as a result of rationing.

And don't say it tastes like chicken! What does it taste like? Gamey beef? When my wife lived in Shanghai she ate dog (once) and didn't like it too much.I still wonder why she keeps begging me for a dog though!

I recall going to the butcher shop with my Mother in Gardena California (Crenshaw and 154th)...must have been the late 40's as I was only 3 when WWII ended. They had roasts, steaks, and ground horse meat as well as the usual beef, pork, etc. I don't recall the flavor of the end product, but I remember my parents having burgers (meat patties) for dinner with a lot of grilled (or fried)onions 'smothering' the meat. I also recall her buying a large roast for a special dinner with visiting relatives. At the time there wasn't any social-stigma about consumming 'Horsemeat'. Mother was quite sensitive to any comments about her kitchen activities, so If their were negative comments about the Horsemeat, we would have known about it.

The NY Times did a horse meat article recently. The article disclosed, as other posters attest, horse meat is quite common outside the US. I think it is not accepted in the US because we still hold the horse in high regard and still have a romantic attachment to horses due to the important role the animal played in our actual and imagined history.

I am among those that would not try horse meat, but I do find it strange that it is perfectly acceptable to make pet food and glue out of horses.

Here is a wonderful horse meat recipe for you........enjoy!

Pastissada

Traditional recipe from Verona section............Italy

2 pounds horse meat
2 ounces lard or porkback fat
2-3 carrots, cut into slivers
2 sticks celery, diced
1 large onion, diced
4 cloves
a dozen coriander seeds
1 bay leaf
1 clove garlic
1 bottle Italian red wine
flour, enough to brown the meat with
1/4 cup olive oil
salt & pepper to taste
1 Tbsp. butter kneaded into enough flour to make a small ball
paprika to taste

Slather the meat with the lard and slivers of carrots. Dice the other vegetables and put them, with the meat and spices (except the paprika) in a bowl. Pour the wine over everything, then cover and marinate in the refrigerator for three days, turning the meat occasionally.

Pat the meat dry with paper towel (keep the vegetables and the marinade), flour it, and brown it in the oil over a brisk flame. Add the vegetables. When they’ve cooked for a few minutes, pour the marinade over the meat. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for about three hours. Once the meat is done, remove it to a platter saving the sauce that has been formed with the marinade.

Return the sauce to the fire, thicken it with the butter-flour ball, and season it to taste with paprika. Pour the sauce over the meat, and serve with a good traditional side dish.

As a young adult, one of my favorite books was called "Fifteen", by Beverly Cleary. In this story, the heroine's new boyfriend had a job delivering horse meat to homes as dog food. I believe it was post-World War II. He would just walk in the back door and put it in the refrigerator. It was a different world.....

My mother always gave me some religious speech about how humans were only supposed to eat meat from a cloven hoofed animal. Now as to where she got that or how is beyond me. It might be in the bible somewhere, but i'm not sure.

Believe it or not, horse meat is very, VERY good! In France it's sold in a special shop called "Chevaline". One would cook it like a roast beef.........the taste is a little stronger than beef, but not nearly as strong as moose!

In the Navy we got a shipment of horsemeat once it was just labled A-1 steaks. It looked different to us on the galley deck the meat was almost bright red. I thought it was imported beef,Australian,New Zeland or From Argentina but the Chief insisted it was horse meat. Smelled different when cooking but tasted fine to me. This reminds me of the old All in the family episode when Meathead served Archie horsemeat for dinner one evening with out telling him what it was. A real classic. Chow Jim

Had it in France near the French naval base in Toulon. Cooked on an outdoor grill as shish kebab with tomatos, onions, peppers. It was a bright red and required frequent basting as it had almost no fat. Pretty tasty!

When the old Geo. Weigert company on Greenwood Street in Worcester, Mass closed in the 1970s, a young man was going to buy the building and convert it from doing cattle, sheep and pigs to horses. The outcry was so loud, that he never got to open. He already had another plant, and he had a contract to supply meat to France. I met him once in a bar. He seemed like a nice guy, rather than the male version of Cruella DeVille as depiced by his detracters. As I recall, the French sued him for non delivery and he went bankrupt. The old Weigert plant sat empty for a few years and was torn down. A bank now sits on the site.

Geo. Weigert Company made the best hot dogs that I have ever had.

“Taboo” meats, such as horsemeat, are discussed from a historic perspective in this link:

http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Taboo_meat

The following link provides several pages of horsemeat recipes from various cultures:

http://www.florilegium.org/files/FOOD-MEATS/horse-recipes-msg.html

Here’s a link for “Unmentionable Cuisine” , book published in 1979 by the University of Virginia Press that discusses “taboo” foods that are acceptable in other cultures and provides many recipes:

I will never forget the time that I was walking down the street of a small town 10 miles from Paris. My host and hostess were shopping for meat and vegetables. I saw a store front with a beautiful sign which had a horse's head on it. I questioned it and they told me that it was a butcher shop that sold horse meat only! I could not believe it..................looked in the window and saw the color of the meat and nearly passed out.

about five or so years ago I ate raw horse meat w/ small rounds of spinal cord as a topper. Actually pretty good...I asked for seconds.

This was in Osaka Japan. Whale meat followed...no seconds on the whale meat...rubber on a plate.

I guess all of us are adventureous with our culinary treats. Personally, I enjoy a steak occasionally and probably more fish and chicken. Somehow anything else including horse, mutton or anything else never personally appealed to me.

I spent some time in Paris on several different occasions and I do realize that others have different preferences. Personally I do not and I would not take a lot for me to become a vegan.

I do recoginize that others prefer different things and I respect that but my own preference is about as mild as it gets.

Not kidding a bit. Japanese seem to want to put things in front of you to see if you will eat them. Chinese also. Grilled fish testicles (didn't even know they existed until the plate arrived), pig's anus in BBQ sauce, and a still beating cobra heart (that was Thailand) are all food adventures afforded me for being an international road warrior.

Funny thing was serving squirrel to a group of Japanese and southern Americans then getting to loudly say how picky Japanese were about their food. everyone is picky about their food...I'm just not going to back down. The raw horse w/ the spinal cord disks was GOOD. The grilled fish testicles was not something I would order on my own.

My Grandparents told me that meat was in such a high demand during world war 2 that they had to wait in line for a hour or more to get horse meat during world war two!
