The thread about sardines got me thinking about the little smoked oysters that come in a can. I always keep some on hand. My fav way to eat em is on a saltine cracker with some sour cream and a slice of pickled jalapeno. Anyone have some other good ways to eat em?

And about the brands? They all taste about the same to me but I haven't tried all of the different brands.

Yep: They are good. A toothpick & some hotsauce is all that I need, though. I save the saltines for the raws...

Had a couple of cans in the pantry one year around Thanksgiving. I made smoked oyster stuffing. I loved it. The family hated it. Never did it again. In fact every year, someone warns me, "If you're going to make stuffing again, don't make it with those darned smoked oysters!" Phillistines, what are ya gonna do?

Heck, I'll even eat the Geisha brand. Little tiny cocktail fork and eat 'em right out of the can. Smoky, yummy.

  • Drain, dab with plain old yellow mustard, put on a saltine. I'm sure other mustards could be used, but this is how I was introduced to them.
  • Drain, chop, and use in a cheese ball

We sometimes mash them up in a smoked oyster spread, but we also like to mix mayonnaise and horseradish, put a spoonful of that on a cracker, and place a smoked oyster on top. Extremely simple, but people go for it.

How did I miss this thread. I love smoked oysters in a can!

In additon to the various appetizers or snack recipes similar to those listed above, I also use them to make oyster and seafood soups. They're my little secret ingredient I've used in dips too.

Scorereader, Right on, about adding them to (already prepared) soups.
When I am heating up a can of Clam Chowder, tossing in a can of the Smoked Oysters (oil and all) make it that much better. Quick and Good works for me.

Have to admit, I eat them once or twice a year, too--usually as part of a summer lunch. Sometimes sardines or kippers are good as well.

A must-have on Thanksgiving and Christmas when the family gathers here. My grandchildren (inexplicably) insist I have them on hand, or it's not a holiday. I also like them with a can of kipper snacks and toast for lunch. Wash it all down with a Moxie. Pure bliss!

I'd imagine they'd be good prepared and served like traditional escargot (so that would be "à la bourguignonne")

I have never had smoked oysters. I usually like oysters about anyway and I have had them every way except smoked.

I cannot imagine the taste of those tasty rascals. I certainly will try them before the summer os over.

Those things are hard to get enough of. I open a can, and immediately I've got my sons and my cats hovering, waiting for me to give them all away. I buy the cheap cans from Smart and Final, lots of them, out of pure self-defense, and eat them however I can, fast enough so I get a few.

My area is abundant with the availability of fresh Apalachicola Bay oysters year round, so I admit I have never tried canned oysters. However, canned/tinned smoked oysters and kippered herring are on my list of frequently eaten foods. I even like the canned mackerel from (Argentina)? That stuff is so cheap it is ridiculous. Needless to say, my cats REALLY adore the canned mackerel stuff, also. Years ago, I EVEN tried Surströmming. I was very lit that night... My advice to myself was to NEVER do THAT again...

Welcome to roadfood Umberto Do you play poker? There is a famous Umberto who does.

There is some info here somewhere about wat the little numbers, use by dates, on the can mean. Where was that, anyone? Post the #'s and I bet someone can tell you.

My rule, if it looks and smells OK, and a small taste is OK, I eat it, but.... I'm kinda brave about that kinda stuff. Are they smoked oysters?

After reading this thread, I bought a can of smoked oysters last week at wally world. Opened the can, ate one, and it was nasty. Hubs had told me he liked them, so I wrapped them up and put the in the fridge for him to eat, but he ended up putting them outside for the cats. The cats wouldn't eat them either.

It's been three days since I tasted that thing, and even though I've brushed my teeth 9 or 10 times and gargled with mouthwash, that awful taste is still in my throat, and that smell is still in my nostrils. I'm sure they weren't spoiled, so I guess I just don't like smoked oysters. Or maybe I should just try another brand.

I have heard people either adore it or revile it forever. I suppose it's like nuoc mam, an acquired taste.

Okay, possible silly question...are all canned oysters smoked? I like fresh oysters raw or on the grill JUST until they open as I like the "oyster" taste. A co-worker of mine eats them at work often and tries to get me to try them as she knows I'm an oyster eater. Haven't done it yet....
I have to stop by the store on my way home and am thinking about getting a can...or not.

I seem to be cursed with "Grocery Store Dyslexia". Lately I've found myself scanning the shelf for something I want and then inadvertently selecting a neighboring product instead.

This has lead to selecting: limeade instead of lemonade, microwave kettle popcorn instead of light butter popcorn, and canned oysters instead of canned smoked oysters.

I was moved by this thread to try canned smoked oysters, but because of my grocery store dyslexia I can indeed testify to the fact that non-smoked oysters do exist in the can.

Thanks for the response. I stopped at Albertson's last night as I said I would and all they had was smoked. I actually felt my mouth water a bit but that could have been a mixed message so I declined on the smoked oysters. I'll keep looking. One more question, are they a product of the USA?

Dr. Seuss would've done it better! I'm not ashamed of the way I like them, though. However: I vaguely remember that when I was a little bitty kid, I saw them (in an unlabeled bottle?) and was horrified at what I thought my parents were eating. Scared, too.

I love oysters in every fashion including the little smoked oysters.Drain and mince a can of smoked oysters.Combine with cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, green onions, garlic,Worchestershire sauce,Tabasco sauce, kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper for a fabulous dip/sandwich spread!

Sounds Great! I may need to get out of my PJ's and go to the store and get some of those puppy's!I have everything else. May add some horseradish to boot!

I really should stop hanging out around here. Sometime back, a similar topic concerning canned foods popped up, got inspired went and bought a dozen or so of assorted delicacies such as sardines, potted meat, vienna sausages, Beenie Weenies, etc. Polished all those off. Now I gotta get smoked oysters!!

Fried and raw is the only way I enjoy those little fellows.

Many years ago I ate 50 raw oysters. I thought that was a super feat until I read about that being below average.

We only have one place in Knoxville that serves real good fried oysters.

Mamaw Smith use to make oyster stew or soup many years ago. I enjoyed it then but it has been at least 55 years since she did that.

Has anybody ever told you you're way too suggestible?
