when ordering side orders at a fast food restaurant can i add additional sides like onion rings with the fries?

Why wouldn't you be able to? All the places I've ever been to have such things listed a separate menu items and you can order anything on the menu. Perhaps I'm missing something in your question.

My new trick. Order two 4 piece chicken nuggets. You get 8 nuggets for $2, as opposed to a 6 nugget order for more than $2. Go figgur'.
a small fry and drink, you're all set for less than one of those meals, which is really just too many fries. And, if you eat in, you can refill your $1 soda at most places. So, no reason need a large soda.
