Grew up in Rochester, lived in Buffalo 5 years. Just went back to Buffalo this weekend and had wings at DUFFS!

MAN ARE THEY TASTY! I sometimes ask for them to be cooked an extra minute, since I like mine slightly crispy. I think it helps them hold up to the sauce.

Another great place- Rooties Pump Room on Millersport.
I'm not a big fan of the Anchor Bar wings.
In Rochester, Pontillos aren't bad, but they are not anywhere near Duffs. Haven't found any great wings in Chicago yet...

I am no authority on chicken wings. I've not been to Buffalo in years. The best wings I have ever had were at the airport in Reading, PA, I forget the name of the restaurant, but they were excellent and had a variety of sauces to choose from hot to mild.

3. Elmo's-------------------Getzville, NY--excellent cajun wings
4. Anchor Bar---------------Buffalo, NY

Nice to see Elmo's make your list. Anchor Bar is turning into a tourist trap and they are pricey. Duff's is certainly good. I would add The Buffalo Tap Room & Grill to the top 5 list.

Huge wings. They also have BBQ charbroiled wings which are yummy. They're like eating candy. Great beer selection too.

One place that is good but is not often talked about is Archie Moores in New Haven. Plus if you go at happy hour and buy a beer the wings are free.

I almost never get to Buffalo and I appreciate how far afield some restaurants can stray from the way they are supposed to be.

It is not surprising that nobody says the wings at Holiday Inn or Shoneys are the best.

Meanwhile, in Florida, especially around Daytona Beach, there are quite a few places that do the standard deep-fry-em, wash-em-around-in-the-sauce thing ... but the real specialty is they then put them on the grill and char-em over the open fire in the grill.

Maybe not authentic, but spectacular. I've turned many of the people I travel with on to these and now the first stop they all make is at The Brickyard on International Speedway Drive and/or The Oyster Pub closer to the beach. (Brickyard is by far the better.)

I'm with most everybody else ... the wings should be Buffalo-style (no honey, etc.) and they should be hot. Although the grilling will let you get away with slightly hotter than you'd normally order.

BTW: The Brickyard, in my opinion, makes the best burger in the USA too.

Truly is a great place for wings though.

Drovers Inn, hands down, has the best wings I've EVER tasted. I think the size of the wing gets larger every time I go there. The secret recipe sauces are all mighty tasty, too. I've never been in the "dungeon" yet because...well...I'm only 20. But I'll be able to check it out soon haha.
Oh...and I totally dig the atmosphere of the place. A popular place with us college kids, most definitely. Make sure to call and make reservations though! Otherwise, you may have to wait a while or even go somewhere else!
Honorable mention>>Quaker Steak and Lube in PA...I've only been there twice but the wings were awesome...and SO many different varieties to choose from!

They sound great. But, I'd submit that if we're talking about "varieties to choose from," we're probably not talking exclusively about Buffalo wings, which are served in a pretty specific way (along a spectrum of heat intensity.)

I am drooling! I have to agree, the best place is the original! I'm from Jamestown which is about 90 min south of Buffalo. Here, there are a couple places for good wings. I like my wings all ways... everything from godzilla hot to butter garlic. My two favorite places in Jamestown are The Saloon and The Cherry Lounge. The second has a great special of 2 dozen wings and a pitcher of beer for $7-something. I like mine saucy, with lots of bleu cheese or ranch dressing... can't forget the celery or carrot sticks too!

hmmm the best ones i've ever had have been the ones my first husband used to make..he'd pre bake them in the wok-- then dip them in his sauce (recipe off a bottle of "red hot" ) then grill them..and as he grilled them he'd rotate them in to the sauce--dip them and and baste them...and they were the best.. and seemed like every time we'd have them- we'd also have to make a run to DQ for some ice cream.. man do i miss those wings..........

now-- i'd have to say-- the best i've eaten since.. have been the ones that they have at Saylors Pizza in Dowagiac Michigan at the ice festival.. they are HOT HOT HOT.. and i think i've only actually eaten one.. my husband -- on the other hand-- ate many of them.. won the wing eating contest that they had last year.. hoping to do it again this year, breaking his last year record of 17 wings (they give you 3 minutes and it's as many as you can eat in that time..) and they are big and hot.......... :)

I've tried the wings at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY. They were all right, I guess. But I've found that the best wings were actualy north of Buffalo in Niagara Falls, NY where they seem to serve up jumbo, Schwartzenegger size wings. One such place was Frenchy's, the first place I ever tried authentic "Buffalo-style" wings. They were deep-fried and coated with that familiar hot sauce. I tried two bowls of fifteen. One had medium and the other hot sauce. Thirty of these monsters are definetly a meal unto themselves. Medium combines the perfect balance of heat and taste, while the hot sauce will definitely make you sweat buckets. Frenchy's is located just off the main downtown route of Niagara Falls, NY and is a family run family restaurant (no booze) that has a plain white and blue decorum. If you're starving for something while you wait, you can grab a pizza square. They're saucy and cheesy and will tied you over. Sammy's is a more popular, sports themed gathering place (booze) that is located near the baseball stadium and which also serves up some pretty good jumbo sized wings. Maybe they should call these jumbo sized portions "Niagara Falls Chicken Wings".

Gumbo, You have it almost perfect! Except try this for yor sauce... Add tablespoon of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of malt vinegar! This will just about duplicate the bes wings I have ever tasted including Florida, Alabama, Texas, Canada, etc...

I am a big fan of Frankies Wings & Things in Florida... best I ever tasted. I ususally get their #4 with a side of 911. After I eat the first #4 I use the bone to paint the 911 sause on... dunno anyone that has ever finished more than a few 911s completely drinched.

Anyway, I have tried to duplicate the recipe and yours is very close... you will be amazed at the difference with malt vinager though! Let me kno how you like it:)

An earlier post mentioned Alligers in Sayre, PA, which amazes me because Sayre is such as small little town in the middle of nowhere (don't ask me what I was doing there)..but the wings are truly great...didn't know anyone else in the world knew about this place..

In Chicago however, just found something absoulutely amazing...not technically "Buffalo" style, but may be some of the best wings I've ever had. I'ts a Chinese/Korean hole in the wall on West Lawrence called Great Sea..read about it on the Chicago Reader website, where they raved about the wings. Boy, were they right. Again, it's not Buffalo sauce, but rather a sweet/spicy Asian sauce that is addicting (they sell the sauce at the counter as well). Even better is the quality of the chicken...it's only the drumlette parts...but they've somehow butterflied them, so that the meat is all bunched up at the end...actually look like little lamb chops..and, oh my, are they ever tender (and huge). Unfortunately I'm a little afraid for myself, as I can see me devouring way too many of these over the years...not exactly healthy to say the least, but whoa, just so tasty.

years ago, chinese restaurants(at least on Beacon St. in Boston) used to have wings on their menu's,they were 'naked' but had some sort of dry rub seasoning.....they were wonderful. I asked the guy who owns 'Ho-Ho's' in Tampa why they don't do likewise and he told me since the Buffalo wings became so popular,no one was interested in ordering wings when they went out for Chinese food.....this makes sense, now I have to find a way to loosen him up(nice guy-great food),as if running a busy restaurant wasn't enough.

Has anyone heard of Wing Heaven? We had one open in town here, but yet to try them out... Their postcard has a web address, but it's not active (or registered for that matter)...

Frankie's is one of my favorite haunts, too. They are on Wickham Rd in Melbourne, and not far off the interstate if anyone is driving by (there is also a location up by Port Canaveral, if you are in town for a cruise!). They are scaled 1 through 9. I am usually good for 4s when they are on! I prefer my wings to hot, but drier than most. I have a friend with whom we always stop at Frankies. He can polish off 7s, while building up a pretty goodly sweat. Usually he plops one of the 7s in with my 4s and I get to play "russian roulette". When I pick the winner, I can usually down the rest of my beverage on the spot.

Beware if you go there...the sauces are not evenly spaced in degree of hot from 1-9. One is mild, two is medium, three is medium hot, four is about as hot as most places serve on their regular menu. Five through nine are for the truly psychotic!

Have fun, but just make sure you don't look for the Anchor Bar in Niagara Falls...it's in Buffalo. Couldn't tell from your post if you knew that, so I wanted to make sure.

The Anchor Bar is where everyone from out of town frequents for "Wings". Us local residents know all the best spots such as:
1. Brennan's Bowery Bar---Clarence, NY
2. Duff's-----------------Amherst, NY
3. Elmoes-----------------Getzville, NY

All three of the above put the Anchor Bar to shame. The Anchor bar utilizes very small wings and is living off of its reputation as the inventor of "Wings". Everyone here never refers to them as Buffalo Wings but simply as "WINGS". You know the out of towners when they ask for Buffalo Wings.

How can Brother Jimmy's possible be in your top ten. That is tragic!! I have ate there many of time and each time I want to kick myself in the ass for ordering their wings. They are horrible.

As I grew up near Sayre it was the first place I had wings. I had heard about them for years. Yes it is quite a rural area, but it is very convient to visit if anyone is traveling on the NYS "Southern Tier Expressway"- AKA NYS RT-17 (now parts and hopefully the whole becoming Interstate 86).

Take the Waverly, NY exit (#61), head south (about 1/4 mile) into PA (PA RT 199) (past the "Grand Victorian" Best Western Hotel (formerly Guthrie Inn)), it is very easy to find- it will be on the right just before the right curve in the road.

It is DEFINIETLY worth the visit!

About 8 years ago I took a pilgrimage to the Anchor bar... (I really wish I had visited Duff's- haven't been there yet). To say the least, it just didn't live up to all the hype. I think the tourist "trap" thing must have really hurt the quality. I wish I could travel back in time to the late 60's to see them at the beginning.

I don't know if anyone from Knoxville area will read this but I'm wondering about a little place called Spicey's that advertises excellent wings. I may just have to try it myself.
We have an expanding chain out of PA called Quaker Steak & Lube, and their wings were ok IMO, but I think there are better.

They're all a bit of a drive: 30-45 minutes, I'd say. I haven't lived in NF since the mid 80s, and the only one of those three places I know is Duff's. It's worth it.

Spudnut,

Duff's was my first introduction to Wings on a High School Band exchange concert back in 1982. I returned after a Buffalo Bisons Game in 2000 on Labor Day weekend and the wings were just as good.

Anyone else have horrible night sweats from spicy food? Took me 20 years to figure it out. Wake up drenched. Limits my intake.

If anyone's in the Phoenix, Arizona area, I HIGHLY recommend Long Wong's Burgers and Wings (they also sell hotdogs <obviously> and fries and other 'bar' food). There are a few throughout the Phoenix area and they're all locally run and real hole-in-the-walls. The burgers are greasy and yummy and the wings are excellent and meaty! The sauces range anywhere from Mild to Suicide...very tasty!

There's a place that's somewhat new in Clark, NJ, which is in Union County. Molly Maguire's on Central Ave. They've got the best wings I've had in a while. I love Buffalo wings and have had'em in many places. Molly's wings are bigger/meatier than most places. While they aren't super hot they have a great taste. They aren't the cheapest wings, but they aren't the most expensive I'd had either. I recommend them.

Passing through the New Haven area? Try the Side Street Grill in Hamden - http://www.sidestreetgrille.com/ - GREAT wings!
If you like them hot, order the "screamin' demon" wings - they'll probably make you sign a release first, though - they ARE hot, but GOOD...

In NYC:
Brother Jimmy's (east or west side) definitely has winning wings - flavorful and spicy in a sauce that is smooth and memorable.
Blondie's (79th/Amsterdam) is also really good - all you can eat on Monday nights for about $10.
Outside NYC, I'm a big fan of the Quaker Steak & Lube, a small chain focused mostly around OH & PA. Lots of wing choices, plenty of other fun options. The kind of chain/theme restaurant a road-foodie could enjoy without feeling like a sellout.

But if you want the best wings recipe ever....

Just had a short trip back east to Albany and had the absolute privilege of eating the hot style buffalo wings at My Place & Co. I found out later that there are more than one of these establishments in the area. The meat was tender and flavorful, there was a crunch to the skin, but not the over-crunch of a deep fried chicken wing...but I give the most credit to the sauce: tangy with a hint of roasted pepper. Oh and the bleu cheese dressing was stellar. Two messy thumbs up!

Am I missing something? Did I miss the post? I have yet to see anyone mention Quaker Steak on this website. They have my favorite wings, and I think most of their locations have an all you can eat wing buffet on Tuesday nights. You should check them out if they are in your local areas. www.quakersteak.com

I think, when you grow up outside of upstate/western NY you don't really know what a real Buffalo wing is until you go there and have one. And even then, you're likely not to fully grasp the buffalo wing.

Much like NYC metro area is saturated with any number of great Pizza places making that area arguably the best region for Pizza (not deep dish...don't worry Chicago, you're still good), Western/Central NY is the best region for wings and host numerous places to get a great wing (or dozen). The people who live in that region can tell you about the subtle differences from one wing joint compared to the one down the street. Most outsiders cannot tell the difference and hence do not have the distiguishing palate to tell the difference from one wing joint from another or a really great wing from a decent wing. And, that's ok.

It is possible there are good places to get wings outside of that area, much like there are great places to get pizza outside of NYC. But pound for pound (and wing for wing) upstate/western NY has the best wings at a long list of places. The Anchor Bar may be the original, but there are dozens and dozens of places to get great wings in many of the small towns and larger cities that dot the highways and byways of the Region. Any one who only names that one establishment in the region in a list of "best" wings, has not likely been to any other wing joint in Western, NY.

I can tell you of a great place for wings in Greensboro, or DC/NoVa/MD, or Greenville, NC or Virginia Beach, or Pittsburgh and the like, but it's not like home. None of them. They're good, and I eat wings outside of Western, NY, but its just not the same.

And I won't argue about who has the "best" wings. That's very subjective and slanted on where you are from and what your taste buds are conditioned to enjoy. But "authentic" is very argueable and you have to go to Western, NY. I wouldn't tell you the choicest steakhouse is in Buffalo any more than tell you that the choicest seafood is in Oklahoma. So, I won't agree with anyone who says the "best" buffalo wings are in NOT in Western, NY.

I mean, really...would you believe me if I said the best Philly cheese steak is in Columbus, OH?

Like everyone else I love chicken wings as well. I think my method for cooking them is much like Barbara's.

As an alternative I decided to substitute shrimp for the chicken but still incorporate some of the chicken wings flavor. Here is a recipe that I came up with. I wrote it for baking but I also do them on the grill. Very simple as you can see.

Bacon Wrapped Jumbo Buffalo Shrimp

Recipe Summary
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 20 Minutes
Yield: 6 Servings

2 lbs peeled and devined, jumbo shrimp
10-12 slices of bacon
1/2 C hot sauce

blue cheese dressing
celery
toothpicks

Bake the bacon till half cooked. Roughly 400 degrees for 7 minutes. Remove and let cool. Save pan with bacon drippings.

Slice bacon strips in to thirds then wrap them around shrimp. Secure with toothpicks. Place the wrapped shrimp to the pan and bake until shrimp is done and bacon is crispy, about 6-7 minutes. Place shrimp in a bowl and toss with slightly warmed hot sauce.

Serve with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks

The wing is the best part of the chicken. You get the white and dark meat all in one plus tons of skin. What more do you want in life? I also love eating the wing tips - they are crunchy with lots of taste and uh... more skin.

I haven't been to Buffalo to try those places, but the best I've had are at Buffalo Joe's near Northwestern's campus in Evanston. Great stuff.

the best wings in my opinion in the Washington , DC/Northern Virginia area are at The Buffalo Wing Factory. They are a local chain, having probably five restaurants in the area. Really big and good. I am from NYC but lived upstate for four years, so i have obvioulsy had better, but they are really good for the area. As for the Abany area, I think that Peabodies in Saratoga Springs, NY take the cake.

And the annual Wing Off is every year in late August! Anybody going to the wing festival in Buffalo this year?

You extra-large wing freaks are out of your minds. When properly prepared, smaller wings are far superior. See if you can follow me here...giant wings have all this tasteless meat left over after you have eaten the part with the sauce on it. If this is so wonderful, why don't you just order boiled chicken breasts and dip that in bleu cheese? Smaller wings allow the sauce to penetrate the meat and the flavor to reach through to the bone.

The Beechmont Tavern in New Rochelle, NY is closing soon. I am travelling cross-country from LA next month for one last shot at the best wings in the world. They are small, broiled, and perfect. You can rave all you like about your catcher's mitt sized wings, but Beechmont wings will still be the best. 25 cent wing Mondays will live on...

I'm a huge buffalo wing fan, sadly the ones I had in Buffalo, NY were pretty terrible, very fatty and greasy without a lot of flavor.

I live in Chicago now, and the Goose Island Brewery here has excellent wings, the hot ones make me tear up instantly. They have glld flavor too, without sacrificing the hotness.

Also, I've heard that there is a place somewhere (like a little roadside hole in the wall) that has a five wing plate that's free if you can finish it. Anyone else heard of this place? I can't seem to track it down.

You must have had bad luck, because you can get great wings on pretty much any block in Buffalo.

Do you mean besides the guy four posts up from yours?

Western NY wings are far superior to what one would generally find elsewhere. If there is one wing place in your neighborhood that does better than average wings, you are in good shape, but the greater Buffalo area has many places with above average wings.

For the one poster who said that the wings that they got in Buffalo were not good -- you weren't in the right place!

Locally, here in Melbourne, Fl, check out Frankie's Wings and Things on Wickham Rd. -- they also have another location up by Port Canaveral, if you are sailing into the Port for a cruise, this is an easy add-on -- and will keep you out of the Disney add-on!

If you cook the wing correctly, then the meatier chicken wings taste the best.
Those wings with hardly any meat on the bones (which are basically deep fried chicken wing skin) are crap.

Personally I agree, I like the meatier ones more myself. Having said that I think it's an indivual taste issue. Everyone has different taste in the size of the wings and/or the sauce.

It's impossible to say one place has THE best wings but it sure does make for good conversation!

While I wasn't born in Buffalo I am a UB alum (Class of '86).
I never liked the term "Buffalo Wing" either because we always just called them "Wings" or "Chicken Wings". Like in China they call Chinese food "food". It was fun when you really couldn't get them anyplace else. We would make a quick stop at Duff's before going to the airport so friends in the NYC area could have a special treat.

Like wine, wings have a high number of flavor notes. Only with experience can you truly tell the subtelties among different types.

Must be served with carrot sticks in addition to celery and bleu cheese.

Favorite places in Buffalo - Duff's, Rooties.

Discovered Archie Moore's in New Haven when I moved to CT. By the way they have had a place in Fairfield for several years now.

there is this really small place outside of Wheeling WV called Drovers that has the best wings i have ever seen. They only sell wing and chili fries. My friend loves hots sauce and puts Daves insanity sauce on everything, so i took him there and made him try the Kill Me flavor and he said it was the hottest sauce he has ever tried. They have this nice little bar in the basement where you can have some amazing wings and drink some good beer.

The mantra, "the hotter the wing the better the taste," is not a chicken wing mantra in Buffalo.

I like em all. The skinny ones, the meaty ones, the breaded ones,
Hooters, KFC....love em all. Buffalo wings are one thing, chicken wings are another. No need to apply rules and fight about what the true title should be. We make our own traditions while enjoying the old ones!

Famous Dave's BBQ. A 10 on any scale. The wings are delicious. The sauce is like no other and the bleu cheese dressing is to die for. It complements the wings PERFECTLY!The sides are screamin' and they don't skimp on the servings. This place is a favorite in my book.

I use to live in Portland, ME and every weekend I would stop by a place called Buffalo Wing's and Things. I just have to say they made one of the best buffalo wings I tasted. Ever since I moved to California I've tried every buffalo wings at every place that offered it and none came close to Buffalo Wing's and things. Anyways, I read this post and 99.9% of the places that's mention are on the East Coast. Anyone, got a place in the West Coast say San Jose, California they could recommend?
