Has anyone ever tried one of these? I think it is a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage and deep fried or baked. Souinds yummy!!

Scotch Eggs
Scotch eggs are served in most pubs throughout England as a snack. In Scotland, they are served for breakfast. They are also wonderful for picnics.

4 medium eggs (at room temperature)
1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 cup all-purpose flour seasoned with
salt and freshly-ground pepper
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 cups fine, dry breadcrumbs
Oil (for deep frying)

Pierce each egg with a pin at its rounded end. Place eggs carefully into a pan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and when the water is really bubbling, immediately cover with the pan lid and remove from the heat. Leave them for 10 minutes, then run cold water over and around the eggs in the pan for 2 minutes. While the water is running onto them, crack them so that some of the moisture gets in. Peel the eggs carefully.

Divide the sausage meat into four equal pieces and roll each out on a lightly floured surface into a 5- to 6-inch circle.

Put seasoned flour in one bowl, the egg-milk mixture in the second, and breadcrumbs in the third. Dip a shelled egg into the egg mixture, then in flour. Repeat with each shelled egg. Now place each egg onto a circle of sausage meat and bring up the sides to enclose egg completely. Hold it in both hands and squeeze gently to eliminate the air. Dip each ball into the egg mixture and finally roll each in the breadcrumbs.

Heat oil to 375 degrees F to 400 degrees F.

Fry 2 eggs at a time until each egg is a deep brown all over, about 10 minutes. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat with remaining 2 balls.

To serve as a main course dish, halve each ball. As an appetizer, quarter each ball.

Serve with English mustard. These can be made 3 days ahead and refrigerated, but not frozen.

Wow! What a great menu. I wish we had a good English pub around here.
I like a good meat pie once-in-a-while.

Love Scotch eggs. Had them, and other pub food, lots of times in different pubs in England during our vacations and business trips there. I enjoyed all the English foods. Some people declared they didn't care for English food, but I couldn't understand why. Some people also said they can't serve a decent fish, but the fish I ate in England was delicious. I loved the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, while some Americans said it was too bland. Of course, I would add Worchesteshire sauce, even Tobasco sometimes. One English associate sent me a Christmas card one year telling me, "Don't put Tobasco on kippers!" because that's what I did once at breakfast. LOL

I sure wish they had a good English pub around where I live... Palm Coast FL, right between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine. There are a couple, in each of the two cities, but they are not up to par in my estimation. Loved the English beers also. When in England, the natives really packed away the pub food and beer during lunch. I never could figure it out, I guess they were used to it. I could not do it, I would go to sleep at my job even before afternoon "tea break." Well, the natives did walk and bicycle a whole lot, while Americans tend to drive everywhere instead. :))

Scottish eggs are absolutely outstanding. I think to do them correctly, however, that you need small eggs, like quail eggs.

I want to offer a tip... When preparing Scotch Eggs , have the boiled eggs undercooked before preceding with encasing them with the sausage meat...This prevents them from becoming rubbery during the additional cooking of the Scotch Eggs...

I sampled this delicacy for the first time in Grand Marais, MI in the Upper Peninsula in 2005. In this "coastal" town, there were 2 restaurants at the time, and only one seemed to be open when we were hungry. The restaurant also had its own brewery...what luck!!! I was astounded that such a dish existed, and was happy to try it.
