Favorite Discontinued Sodas

Anybody have that one soda that you always loved and then one day while searching for it...it's gone.

Mine...is the great blast of citrusy goodness SURGE. God I loved that stuff. Granted Coke made Vault which is allright I guess...but it's way too Sprite-y for my memory of "FEED THE RUSH".

So anyone else have a favorite soda that's now in the graveyard?

Riku, years ago there was a soda called Kickapoo-Joy Juice. It was like Mt. Dew.
And we also had Double-Cola, a 16 oz. bottle that costs the same as an 8 oz. one.

Hello All,
I just remembered one I loved, an orange drink called Tru-Aid. It
was similiar to Orange Crush, but not having as strong of an orange taste.

Faygo Brau by Faygo, Blue Sky (the old one), and Get-Up, which was like 7-Up, only fizzier.

What you will find if you actually visit Galco's store is that they make a very good and very cheap Italian hoagie. I went there for soda, and had a great sandwich to go with my Hires.

Original New York Seltzer black cherry, and their root beer. Came in little 10 oz. glass bottles and was the best thing on a hot summer's day.

When I was a kid, all the soda in our house was a brand called "Hammer". We bought it at a beverage warehouse, where you bought it by the case (returnable glass bottles) and could mix and match all the flavors. It was totally generic, with names like "Cola", "Orange", "Lemon/Lime", etc. and was pretty bad, but way cheaper than the national brands.

I do NOT miss it!

Well, Squirt is still around---but the fact is, back in the late 60's and early 70's, the taste was different. Back then, maybe it was cane sugar instead of corn syrup or maybe it was some other ingredient difference---but Squirt from that era was king of the pops for me---perfectly carbonated with a light grapefruit flavor and just the right sweetness/sour calibration. I think 7-Up of that era was better too. Nehi made some great flavors and RC Cola was good stuff.

I remember Shasta Apple soda came out when I was in about the fourth grade. I loved it, but if memory serves it didn't last long. I came upon it again about 15 years later, but it didn't seem the same, so I only bought it once.

I had forgotten about Adirondack! Thanks for bringing back that memory.

Anyone remember Pop Shoppe? My mother used to go there and buy soda by the case. It came in these really small bottles, but there seemed to be an endless supply of different flavors. Every fruit you can imagine and then some, plus the standard cola, root beer, etc. For my mother to buy that much of it, it must have been pretty cheap. But I don't think that lasted long either. And although I remember where the place was, I can't remember if it was a separate store by itself, or connected to the K-Mart next door.

Most of Safewway's Cragmont breand sodas were pretty dire, as I recall, but I loved the Cragmont Sparkling Punch. It was very lightly carbonated and not *too* sweet. The closest comparison I can think of is Delaware Punch, which might as well be defunct itself, as it's only sold in Latin America now.

What I miss the most is any soda in a 16 oz. glass bottle. Nothing like a cold Mt. Dew in a bottle on a hot summer day.

I used to get Hansen's Manderian Orange Soda at the food co-op near UCLA or at Tradeer Joes, but I haven't seen it around where I live now.

Several years ago, Canada Dry used to make a Cherry Ginger Ale. Boy, was that stuff good! Talk about thirst quenching - that stuff really hit the spot for me. Then all of a sudden, they stopped making it. They still have the cranberry ginger ale and (I think) raspberry ginger ale, but no more cherry.

Safeway is carrying Hansen's natural soda now, Tristan Indiana - it's part of their natural/organic food and drink offerings, I think. *LOL* And my daughter and I have become addicted to the Hansen's Cherry Vanilla Creme soda - delicious tasting but chock full of sugar!!

Costco usually stocks various HANSEN's flavors (by the case)

One old flavor I haven't seen in a generation is/wasMission Orange. It may be just the memories of 50 years fading or other stuff like that, but Mission Orange was a favorite of mine - way back when!

Someone commented on the 16oz glass bottles. In the late 70's, I hadn't seen a returnable bottle for ages by then, we relocated to Southern Indiana and all of a sudden we were surrounded by both Coke and Pepsi products in the tall 16oz returnables. (Dr Pepper and Big Red and others also) Those tall 'stretch' bottles got so nice and cold so quickly in the refrigerator. They were sold in 8-packs with (around here) a 10 cent deposit on each bottle.

A few years later they disappeared and suddenly we had the squat-fat-disposable 16oz bottle, with the plastic-foam label that was the backbone of vending sales for a long time. I got kind of used to the the way those bottles 'fit' my hand...but they took a lot longer than the tall bottles to get cold. At first they were glass, but shortly after their introduction they changed to the plastic bottle.
The the 20 oz was introduced...and the vending price shot up to a buck. Nowadays the size varies so much you have to look closely and know your metric conversion tables to do any comparison!! We tend to buy the 24oz size when they are on sale--frequently around here-- or just stay with the cans which are always 'cheap'. I pass on the 16.9oz (metric size the half-litre).

Like the attachment to certain flavors that are now long gone... the container and the size of the 'bottle' are links to our 'earlier years', and I enjoy reliving those memories when I can.

Fresno had calandra Bros. bottling and they several of their own fruit flavors. Boy were they good. Years after they went out of business I met one of the daughters, Linda Calandra, and we had a great time reminessing about the sodas her family made.

Frosty was (is) great! I loved it.

Snapple's Jamaican Ginger Beer...what a great flavor...sharp, and full of ginger.
I think it has been about 10 years since they stopped producing it.

Loved the original Tab and Fresca, but their tastes have drastically changed (and not for the better, IMHO). I wonder if I remember the aftertaste of cyclamates???

Can you still get Canfield's anyplace ???

Dr. Browns Diet Celray. They still make the Diet Black Cherry and Cream flavors, but not diet Celray. Every now and then, I just cut loose and have a regular Cel-Ray. A NYC Jewish thing to be sure, but you haven'tlived till you've had celery soda!

Kickapoo is still around as is Double Cola and Frostie Root beer.

Mountain Dew in 12oz glass bottle made with real sugar can still be found in North Carolina.
Delaware Punch is also still around, although I believe it comes from Mexico.
I have seen Canfields in cans somewhere between NY and Florida in the last 2 years, I think at Kroger in VA.

I miss the Mt. Dew from the 60's and 70's.. As mentioned above about the Squirt and 7-Up, nothing today comes even close anymore... Unless you like a carbonated syrup mix with a funky flavor.. To go back in time and scam a few cases of the good stuff...

Actually, double-cola's only draw was that you got twice the amount for the
same price as a coke or pepsi. The taste was not too good.

made me happy.

This makes me thing of Porto Rico (correct spelling) soda out of Philadelphia. Not exactly a favorite, however. Probably one of the nastier things ever sold as a beverage.

We can not get Diet MT Dew Code Red in Upstate NY anymore. If you have to drink diet it is the best available.

I always loved Pineapple Soda as a child, I don't remember the brand, but it really tasted great.

I know that Nehi sodas are available in some parts of the country, but it's not out West.

Nehi Orange was my favorite orange soda when I was a kid. Other flavors I remember include lime, cherry, grape (Radar O'Reilly's favorite in MASH) and strawberry (I think).

Chocola (probably the same stuff you used to drink) used to be made at a bottling plant on the southside of Indianapolis, and tasted pretty good. No idea if was ever bottled elsewhere, but I think that plant's gone now. YooHoo looks (looked?) the same but isn't (I tried it once).

Oyster-- Shasta, a brand found in many Western grocery chains, makes a Pineapple Soda in 2 liter and 12oz cans.
I saw FAYGOREDPOP at Meijers yesterday. Haven't had a REDPOP in a long time.
We see NEHI Orange and Grape at our local Wal-Mart now and then mixed in with the IBC, Stewarts, and Dr Browns sodas. usually in a 4 pack of glass bottles and quite pricie compared to the big two products.

Nehi Orange and Grape in 12oz glass bottles are all over central North Carolina and the Lumberton area. I've also seen Peach Nehi in plastic bottles somewhere on I-95 in GA or SC.

My most-lamented favorite would have to be Budwine, the elixir of the gods, made by Classic City Bottling Co. in Athens, Georgia. They also produced -- before my time -- a beverage for 3 cents named, appropriately enough, "3 Centa"!!
My cousin Dave E. Hendricks, from Ohio, would open a bottle of Budwine and shout "Smell the Budwine fumes!" when he was visiting.
Another soda I recollect liking but that disappeared was Canada Dry's short-lived Cactus Cooler. I first found that in suburban Atlanta -- Chamblee, as I recollect -- in 1967. It was history by the early 1970's.
Y'know, I really ought to wander by the Atlanta Canada Dry Bottling Plant on Murphy Avenue, S/W and see if anyone remembers Cactus Cooler.

I had Delaware Punch from a vending machine in Louisiana last year.

Smitty's Root Beer, the best root beer I can recall. I think it was midwest thing,I remember it from Port Huron, Michigan back in the mid to late 50's.A nickel a bottle from the old chest style slide along sodapop machines.

In the 80s, Canada Dry made a grapefruit seltzer that was terrific (on its own or with just a splash of vodka). No sweetener, just crisp and refreshing. Then it just disappeared. I've tried other brands and they are absolutely nothing like it.

During canvasses through several regional supermarkets out here on the road, I've spotted several sodas that I thought were defunct. As soon as I return to Athens, I'll detail some of those, but since I only have a moment here, I'll make it wait until later.

P. S. Jenkins Foods of Shelby, North Carolina produces Scrapple, Liver Pudding, Liver Mush, and Hot Liver Mush. I've seen all four products on shelves in this area. Their major local competitor, Mack's Country Livermush, doesn't deliver this far west. (Oh, smell the livermush fumes!)

Delaware Punch is currently sold at least in Brookshire's grocery stores in Louisiana. Brookshire's is a chain based in Texas, so it's probably sold there also. The can says it's a Coca Cola product.

I remember Canada Dry Cactus Cooler but what I REALLY miss is Canada Dry Bitter Lemon. It was an excellent mixer with rum - my first "grown up" drink. Now I try and make do with Tonic Water and lemon. Sigh.

Canada Dry used to make all kinds of "mixers": Bitter Lemon, Lime Rickey, etc. that are long gone (and I'm not that old!). Now Scweppes makes Bitter Lemon but it's not available where I live.

Royal Palm Grapr soda and Hula Punch.

Our Louisville Liquor Barn (chain-Package Store) stocks Dr Brown soda in many flavors. Celrey is one. I don't care much for it but love the Black Cherry and Root Beer.

The soft-drink flavor I miss the most, since it was discontinued a few years ago, was Stewart's Lemon Meringue. It had a nice, mild flavor that tasted just like the meringue on lemon meringue pie.
