Ice Cream made by Universities - Fri, 08/11/06 2:42 PM

When I am out traveling, I love visiting college campuses. And I didn't realize until recently just how many make and sell their own ice cream. From the few I have sampled so far, the quality is quite good.

Growing up in Pennsylvania, we've always known how good the Penn State Creamery is. The Cornell Dairy Bar in Ithaca has a great reputation and is reviewed on this site.

Maybe the best ice cream I have ever had is on the Clemson campus in South Carolina. In the Fall, I especially love the peach which comes with big chunks of peaches in it. They have a small store in the Hendrix Student Center.

http://www.clemson.edu/foodscience/icecream.htm

Washington State University in Pullman also has a great little ice cream shop called Ferdinand's right on campus. Everything I have had their was delicious and very fresh. They are also famous for their cheese, with Cougar Gold being the most famous.

College football season is coming and I am hoping to go to as many games as I can. Any other schools make their own?

UCONN in Storrs CT makes their own and has a dairy bar on campus. Some of the flavors are packaged and sold in the larger supermarkets as well.

Thanks for the reply! I've been to the UConn campus at least twice before and didn't know about the Dairy Bar. This gives a great reason to go back. Isn't their football stadium in Hartford, instead of Storrs?

Mississippi State University makes and sells ice cream, although they are most well known for their Edam cheese.

I wish I had known this before. On my last visit to Starkville, all I bought was a t-shirt and a cowbell! Thanks for the tip!

California State University Fresno makes great ice creams! Flavors include root beer float, cake batter, toasted almond, and lemon, among others... they also make award winning wines as well as dairy products (great cheeses), meats and meat products, produce, nuts, and an awesome teriyaki stick meat snack!

Can't forget Buck's Place at the U. of Missouri here in Columbia, the retail face of a very good ice cream research program.

Yup, UConn stadium is in East Hartford, not on campus anymore.

I was in Ithaca over the weekend and tried the ice cream at The Cornell Dairy Bar. I got one scoop of the Bavarian Raspberry Fudge and one of the Kahlua Fudge and both were outstanding! I was pleasantly surprised they were open, since their website says they are closed on Saturday.

Don't bother looking for it at UF. You can get smoothies all over campus as well as iced coffees, lattes, all kinds of chain food(a frosty from Wendy's) hear Moe's will be on campus next. No ice cream, closest is a chain across the street that we all know as "Ben and Jerrys".

We were at Michigan State over the weekend and visited the Dairy Bar, one in the Union, one in Anthony Hall. They have cheese..excellent sharp cheddar, but the ice cream is beyond compare. Cream is the first ingredient. We had Sesquecentennial Swirl, made in honor of MSU's 150th birthday. It was birthday cake with green frosting swirled into vanilla ice cream. Wish there had been a way to take some home!

Yes, the UCONN stadium is now in Hartford, not Storrs. The Dairy Bar is located in the George White building. Go to http://www.canr.uconn.edu/ansci/dairybar/dbar.htm for all of the info.

Did you stop and get ice cream at the University today? If you did, how was it? I love Clemson....the town and the campus.

Unfortunately not yet, buffetbuster. Something came up at work and I'm not going to be able to leave as early as I'd thought. I'll post here when I do get some.

Clemson is home to my absolute favorite bar in the world...Nick's. Have you ever been there?

I would think schoola that have strong Agricultural Studies departments would produce the better ice cream.

The University of Vermont used to have an awesome dairy bar.
I had an interview in Burlington, and the interviewer took me to the campus for an ice cream. The home made blueberry ice cream could have been the deciding factor for me moving here from Albany, NY !

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Nick's. My usual gameday routines include The Esso Club and/or Tiger Town Tavern. What makes Nick's your favorite?

Ice cream being used as a recruiting tool....what an excellent idea! I know it sure would work with me!

Nick's is strictly a beer bar. They're too close to a church to be allowed to serve liquor. I don't mind though. It's almost a pub in atmosphere. Even when Nick's is crowded, you can still hear yourself talk or think, which is never the case in Tiger Town Tavern. TTT is always way too crowded for me.

Nick's has a great selection of beer and usually the bartenders have great taste in music. I love to chill out there.

Thanks for telling me about Nick's. Next time I am Clemson, I will stop in for sure. And you are 100% right about Tiger Town Tavern....it can get insanely crowded at times.

Let me know when you go to the Hendrix Student Center for ice cream. I am very interested to know if it is still as good as I remember.

University of Md in College Park has an excellent dairy bar, although it has been a while since I've had any of their ice cream. It's on Route 1, right across from "Fraternity Row." Sorry I don't have a link, but I'll check it out and come back and edit if I can find one for the Dairy.

tarragon & PC-
Thanks for the new tips about Maryland and Nebraska. Apparently, this is much more common than I first thought. I really didn't expect there to be this many. Since the University of Maryland is in such an urban area, I never would have suspected they had an ice cream store, too. Unfortunately, I was in College Park last fall for a football game (I saw them beat Florida State), but didn't stop since I didn't know about the store. I will next time for sure.

Improviser,
YES, YES, YES!!
They were quite a good account for the late, lamented Blind Man Ales of Athens, Georgia. (As was The Euclid Avenue Yacht Club in Atlanta.) That says something about the clientele they attract.
Now that new beers are coming into South Carolina, I can't help but wonder what all they have on tap at the moment. Thomas Creek is making some mighty nice seasonals, too.
Now if Pop The Cap can just repeal the 7%-by-weight law in S. C., more goodies will be sold there! In the interim, come to visit us here in Athens, Georgia... home of my favorite brewpub, Copper Creek Brewing Co. downtown.
Now back to the initial question at hand... universities that produce ice cream!
Sidetracked By Everyone But CSX, Ort. Carlton in Athens, Georgia, which is on CSX's Abbeville Leg.

Dearfolk,
The University Of Georgia here in Athens has a Dairy Science Department. I am almost 100% sure that they continue to make ice cream; they did in years past, when my father was alive and would visit the salesroom once a week and bring some home.
I'll ask a friend of mine who is in University Food Service and get back to y'all on this one.

WVU always had excellent ice cream, very reminiscent of homemade, but I've heard rumours that they have stopped it's production, which if true is a dang shame. I agree with Cajun King and buffetbuster, in that Penn State had some really scrumptious ice cream , also.

The Cornell Dairy Bar has fantastic ice creams, but trust me, an Ithaca native, the very best ice cream in that town is on Route 13..Purity Ice Cream. The absolute richest, creamiest, tastiest ice cream for miles around. Their egg nog (holiday special) is absolutely to die for!

Here are the details on the University of Maryland at College Park ice cream:
http://www.umd.edu/features/icecream.html

While I haven't been there in about 10 years, their cafe, The Dairy, is still in operation in Turner Hall right on US Route 1 in College Park. The Ice Cream is superb.

Web page of the cafe:
http://www.dining.umd.edu/where_to_eat/cafes/dairy.cfm

There is a map showing the exact location of The Dairy on UMD's web site.

David_NYC-
Thanks for the U of Maryland ice cream links. I am going to be in that area in two weeks and was excited to try the place out. Unfortunately, the Dairy doesn't seem to be open on weekends, which is when I will be there. I guess I will have to put it on my list of future things to do.

since UMd is closed on weekends, you may want to try:
Max's Best at 2416 Wisconsin Ave NW in DC (glover park neighborhood). This is my DC favorite Ice Cream joint. Ice cream is made on site in this mom and pop shop.

Nearby Max's is one of my favorite pizza joints: Kavanagh's Pizza Pub at 2400 Wisconsin Ave (formerly Faccia Luna - Kevin, formerly a manager at Faccia Luna, bought the place)

also, Rockland's BBQ,(2418 Wisconsin Ave) a DC tradition

and Old Europe, is a fine German restaurant.

I wish I had known when I was at Cornell last fall for a sheep meeting. The dairy bar is right next to the livestock pavillion, so I did get over there, but I missed out on Purity. If I get up there again, I will try it. It will give me something to raz my Cornell grad
sister in law about!!!

BTW, I could be wrong, but I think that the Cornell ice cream is made to be an example of a top quality, mass market type product. It is not what is sometimes called "super premium", and it is priced reasonably. For all the other things it is, Cornell is still, at its' heart, a great ag school (some would say the best), and graduates work for or run major food companies all over the world. In the food department, I think that they are unique in having a great ag and food manufacturing focus on the same campus as a world class hotel and restaurant management school.

While I have never eaten the ice cream I once worked for the company that made the boxes for the BYU creamery. The boxes were so plain they should've been for the Penn State creamery (football fans should get the humor).

Were you able to find out anything about UGA ice cream? If they do still make it, where can I buy it at? I tried to google it, but all I found is an article about the Strawberry Ice Cream Pie at the Georgia Center. I will be going through Athens in April and plan on stopping at UGA and would love to grab a scoop if possible. Thanks for any help you can provide!
