Pastene Soups

I've been trying a new upscale imported soup from the supermarket. Pastene is offering soups imported from Italy in 19.6 FL oz jars for $3.79. Usually, I would not pay that much for bottled soup no matter where it came from, but on close inspection of the label, I decided to try them.

I have tried all three varieties my supermarket offers: White Bean Soup, Tuscan Vegetable Soup and Lentil Soup. All the soups are vegetarian and all natural. Quite frankly, this impressed me and I guess it has impressed a lot of other people, as they seem to fly off the shelf. They can have a full supply one day and be sold out the next.

As I have a jar of the White Bean Soup in front of me, I will give the ingredient list: Cannellini beans, Water, Tomato Pulp, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Onion, Salt, Garlic, Vinegar, Parsley, Chili pepper, Rosemary. Somehow they keep the sodium fairly low, 480 mg per serving (2.5 servings per jar) This is about the same sodium level as many American "reduced sodium soups" of the same serving size.

The proof is in the eating though and all the soups taste pretty good and are hearty. I do like there is no fake anything in the soups, the fat is healthy, and there is no use of potassium salts to keep the sodium lower.

Have others tried these soups? What do you think of them? Are they overpriced? I would appreciate your thoughts.

I found them at Hannaford in the Italian section. I think they are a new product as I found no mention of them at the Pastene web site.

Been a big fan for years. My Mum practically lives on them,along with good bread and salads. She gets them at Hannafords, too.

Oh, I thought you were talking about "pastina" soup, which is soup my Italian grandmother use to make.Just a nice chicken broth, maybe a few grated carrots and pastina pasta (tiny tiny flakes). Italian penicillin?

Big favorite around our house too.
Made it with often with the pasta ancini-di-pepe too. Also we put egg in it ... beat the eggs and then drizzled it into the soup so that it cooked in strings.

I love the Pastene Soups. The Lentil Soup is the best -- I don't have to do a thing to it. I usually combine the Vegetable Soup with the White Bean Soup because I fin that alone, the Veggie Soup is a little bland and the Bean Soup is a little thick. Together, they're great!
