Coffee Ice Cream - Mon, 09/25/06 10:18 PM

When I was growing up in the 60"s in NYC, we had relatives visit us from Chicago. We served them coffee ice cream and they thought it was wierd because they didn't sell it in Illinois at the time.

I was thinking today that I don't see much coffee ice cream available anywhere anymore. Sure, there's "Jamoca" (+ Almond Fudge)and I think Starbuck's makes some exotics, but just plain old coffee ice cream, no.

Has anyone else found this true,or do you get this flavor easily?

Are you still in NYC? If you are, then it's surprising that you can't get coffee ice cream. It's readily available here in Boston, and not just the high-priced brands.

Not sure if you a are in NM or NY, but in NY Edy's and Turkey Hill, which are the only store brands available in my area I still buy, both have coffee flavor. My favorite coffee is the flavor available from Penn state Creamery...very good!

If you have one nearby, the coffee ice cream at cold stone creamery is also very good. They also make a coffee milk shake (but call it something else so they can charge more) and that is REALLY good.

Blue Bell makes a Coffee ice cream, but it's not a year round flavor for some reason. We used to go to a Blue Bell shop and get it hand dipped by the half gallon (much better than the air whipped stuff in the grocery stores), then make Coffee Cabinets with Autocrat coffee syrup from Rhode Island -- a coffee milk shake with just ice cream, syrup and milk. Man those were good. If I ever opened a roadfood restaurant they'd be on the menu.

Coffee is my favorite flavor, and big, bad Haagen Daaz (spelling?) makes the best coffee ice cream I ever had. I never knew it was a regional flavor. It's always been a staple in New York, right up there with Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry.

I'd forgotten that coffee ice cream tends to be regional. At one point in my childhood it was my favorite flavor. It was standard in New England, but we rarely found it in the South and Florida in the 60s. I'm gathering from this site that's still true?

And yes, all the years I lived in NYC coffee ice cream was as common as chocolate, strawberry or vanilla.

Graeters the Cincinnati Ice Cream producer has a Mocha chip flavor that is OUTSTANDING. I am not a coffee drinker, but I love the Mocha Chip they make ! Large chunks of semi-sweet chocolate in the mocha ice cream. We have a stand on our side of the river across from Louisville and I try to stop everytime i am in that part of town!!

My wretched gut forbids me to eat ice cream very often but I do love coffee flavor. I buy it from Schwann's, it may be a seasonal flavor.

You're both so close. It's "Graeter's". ;D

I have a pint of Häagen-Dazs coffee ice cream in the freezer that I'm saving for a special occasion, because I haven't had that brand yet. Looking forward to sampling it!

I see it all over New England, and New York. Funny, I love coffee of all kinds...the stronger the better...but I can't stand coffee ice cream. Must be because I like my coffee black.

Ditto, ditto, ditto! Haagen Dazs coffee is my all-time favorite of all ice creams.

They make "Kona coffee" ice cream in Hawaii, but they don't come close to Haagen Dazs.

I know this borders on Road Food heresy, but I have to admit that when I get an emergency craving for coffee ice cream, I buy a "Jamocha" shake from Arby's. It satisfies. Sorry.

Yeah, and what about that thing Dunkin'Donuts makes fresh to order with ice cream and (real) coffee? (Do not comment on frapuccinos...)

I don't know if it's a case of euphoric recall, but there was a time, a few decades ago, that I thought Hojo's coffee ice cream was the best of all. I haven't had it in years, and my taste in coffee has gotten darker, so I suspect it might taste wan today. My recollection is that it was very creamy and pretty light on the coffee flavor. Has anyone had any lately? Does it still exist?

Scoops of coffee/mocha ice cream are fine. Even better with hot fudge. For me, I love milkshakes with coffee ice cream, cold coffee and ...Kahlua. Starbucks will never make a 'iced coffeee' drink this good.

I love coffee ice cream, Friendly's has it but the Starbuck's classic coffee is as good or better than the ones I remember as a child, and I do not particularly like Starbucks Coffee, so give it a try!

Coffee Ice Cream with Heath bar chunks.

I OD'd last night on a pint, (sugar was 221 ), but hey that's what insulin is for!

Last wed. nite after my college class I whipped thru the Graeter's drive-up window and bought 2 pints of the Mocha chip and a cup with 2 scoops of their Hot Fudge Topping. Took it home, where Janet and I shared a couple of outstanding Hot Fudge Sundaes (we have a large bag of Pecan Halves at home). The 'chips' in the mocha ice cream are large swirl-chunks of semi-sweet dark chocolate. They make a nice contrast to the sweeter and buttery Hot Fudge Topping! We toasted a bunch of the nuts and salted them just prior to dumping them on the Sundaes!! A great late night dessert treat!

The best coffee ice cream I ever had was from an ice cream shop in Clifton, NJ back in the early 1970's. I can't remember the name of the place but I do remember it was next to the old Rowe-Manse store, out their back door in the lower parking lot, to the right. This thread brought those great memories back to me, thanks! Doatsie

When I think of coffee ice cream and other coffee desserts, the first thing that comes to mind is Rhode Island. I am especially thinking of the amazingly delicious scoop of coffee ice cream I had last summer at Gray's in Tiverton and the coffee cabinet at Sam's New York System in Warwick.

I was at a drug store lunch counter in Lima, Peru, once upon a time. For some reason, I asked for coffee ice cream.. The guy didn't hesitate for a second. He scooped up some vanilla, opened a jar of instant coffee, and dumped several spoonfuls on the ice cream. He mashed it in and gave it to me. It was sensational. I've since done it at home many times. You control how strong the coffee flavor is. Try it; you'll like it.

Slightly similar, I was in a cafe Germany wanting a nice, cool glass of iced coffee, my summer daily fix.
Like Pete, my waiter didn't hestiate. Then out he comes with a huge bowl of (coffee) idea cream, mit schlag, cookie and umbrella on top!!!!

(I forgot that the German word for ice cream is "eis" so "ice coffee is not the potable kind. oops!)
