On Sunday I enjoyed a hot dog at the Brady's Run Grille & Guesthouse in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. Every Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. they offer a hot dog free to anyone buying a drink (alcoholic), but whenever I've been there on a Saturday I've always skipped this offer. Big mistake. The natural casing Boar's Head dog is grilled on a flattop and served in a perfectly toasted bun. I ordered mine with spicy brown mustard, relish and chopped raw onions. It was delicious. But you can get your dog with lots of stuff, including chili. But don't ask for bacon. While I don't really believe it, word is they threaten the lives of people who want bacon on their dogs.

By the way, the Bloody Marys there are fantastic, although I usually get a Smithwick's, which Trish always has waiting for me on the bar when I walk in the door.

Michael,
Is the Boar's Head dog all beef or beef and pork? Both are good, but I prefer the beef dog.

Kenny Joe,

Thanks for staying on the job so vigilantly. It sure would be nice if the sandwich place had at least just one hot dog on the menu...a foot-long beef/pork Smith Provisions, served on a foot long Schwebel's roll, simply as an homage to the Pickle Barrel. But then, perhaps I've been seeing too many movies.

John, when I got back to the Brady's Run Grille last week I asked and was told the Boar's Head dog they serve is all beef. Sorry it took so long.

Boar's Head all beef N/C's...a true dog of realm. Up there with Best, Sabretts, the Hatfield beef made for the Eastern market, and Hebrew National.

Interestingly, when Pete's in Newburgh, N.Y., was faced with having to pick a new hot dog to serve because the local brand (Temple Hill) that they had used for decades went out of business, they did an extensive taste test/search and ultimately chose the Boar's Head N/C all beef....not an economical dog by any means. And, they still sell 'em for less than 2 bucks. Absolutely one of my 5 favorite hot dog joints in these United States.

When we were at Pete's for a mini tour in and around Newburgh, I asked some of the long time regulars which dog  they preferred and it was unanimous; Boar's Head. One of my favorite beef dogs also along with Best's, Usinger's, Sabrett, and Hatfield.

The Real McCoy Sandwich Shop has opened. I have visited, but have not yet had a sandwich there. I can confirm that there are no hot dogs of any kind or any other reminder of the Pickle Barrel. Because of the lack of dogs, my report is in the "Sandwich" forum

Scratch another fine Pittsburgh hot dog joint: Steve's New York Dogs on Federal Street has closed. There's a for sale sign in the window.
I always like to balance bad news with good news when possible, so although this may have been previously noted, let me also report that Yovi's has reopened downtown, this time on trendy Market Square.

Hey Screen Bear! Want to eat a Smith's hot dog on Carson Street, a mere six blocks from the site of the late lamented Pickle Barrel? Then check out the menu for the new Pub Chip Shop. The dog is fried, so I will probably pass on it in favor of the doner kebob, which I hear is a decent approximation of the best to be found in Germany.  http://thepubchipshop.com/

Thanks for the tip Kenny Joe!  Looked over the menu and they have some interesting items on there.  And their deep fried hot dog is an obvious nod to Rutt's Hut.  I may have to go check the place out.

Thanks, Kenny Joe. I'm assuming it's the foot-long, or at least hope so. Next time I'm in Pittsburgh, I'll put it on my list.

Great feed. I just ran through the whole thing and learned a lot. Frankfurters hot dogs has reopened under new management in December. It's owner operated by one young guy and he has unique topping combinations as specials. Worth the trip to bellevue.

Bellevuedogs-
Are you the new owner of Frankfurter's?  That place sure has been through quite a few ownership changes since Marty sold the place.  If you are, I wish you the best of luck!
