Top 10 Breakfast Places

We've talked about really great breakfast places and there was a previous top 10 Pancake Places list that the Sterns provided. How about your favorite top 10 breakfast roadfood places? Here are mine in no particular order

1- East Bay Diner- Bellmore NY The best on Long Island? Probably not. But I've been going here since I was a little tyke. I think they have the best Spinach Feta Omelette around.

2- Maine Diner- Wells ME The Baked Beans and Red Flannel Hash are the best and the Blueberry Muffin is pretty good too.

3- Modern Diner/Jiggers Diner- Pawtucket/East Greenwich RI (Tie) Jiggers gets my vote for their Jonnycakes. The Modern Diner for their 2 dozen specials which are not on the menu. I haven't tried all of them but I'm sure they're just as good as the Polenta Omelette and Cranberry Granola Pancakes

4- Dot's Restaurant- Wilmington VT Berry Berry Pancakes- The best pancakes on the planet.

5- Pamela's- Pittburgh PA Known for their Crepe Style Pancakes and Lyonnaise Potatos. The Banana Nut Crepe Pancakes are my favorite.

6- Mclean's- Richmond VA A classic southern breakfast- How's about some Country Ham with those Grits n Eggs?

7- Lynn's Paradise Cafe- Louisville KY Another classic breakfast joint. The Cheese Grits and Country Ham with Baked Apples are just amazing.

8- Hell's Kitchen- Minneapolis MN Will also be on my top 10 list for 2006- The Porridge and Pepper n Garlic infused Buffalo sausage had my taste buds singing.

9- Indian Pueblo Cultural Center- Albuquerque NM- OK, I've never been to the Frontier, so this place gets my vote- It's been over 10 years but I'll never forget the Huevos Rancheros, Carne Adovada and Fry Bread

10- Maltby Cafe- Maltby WA- I used to take all my Sunday Brunch dates here in when I was living in Seattle. I just took a look at their website and am saddenned to see that the Turkey Cheddar Jack Omelette is no longer on the menu

Not many Roadfooders here in the central Ohio area evidently. So here goes with my contribution from mostly the Heartland.

Donna, don't forget Nancy's in Clintonville and the Grill & Skillet on East Main.

My two all-time favorites are Hob Nob Hill in San Diego, and Barney Greengrass in NYC.

Michael, haven't forgotten Nancy's nor the Grill and Skillet, just haven't got around to them as yet. They are on our list of places yet to try. Interesting article in yesterday's paper about Nancy's in Clintonville. Don't know why we haven't been there yet as we lived in Clintonville for a few years in the early 80s.

We must keep mentioning and stressing the great places to eat in the Central Ohio area, and the Heartland in general. I wish we were still able to travel as we once did. We should have kept a journal of all the places we've experienced via the Sterns' books, but who knew back then that a journal would come in handy today? But we do have a boatload of memories of great places countrywide.

Some peculiar breakfast choices, there...btw, Hap Townes retired about 20 years ago.

Breakfast is my least favorite meal. I probably haven't had a pancake or a waffle in over 25 years. The only time I cook breakfast is when we're camping. I know, I'm wierd.

BUT! I do have one favorite:

CAFE DU MONDE in NOLA. Beignets and coffee with chickory. Don't wear black or navy blue.

Oh, I had forgotten about Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans until Lleechef mentioned it. That was a great breakfast, sitting there eating those wonderful beignets and coffee, watching people and enjoying the entire experience. Again, many years ago but what memories!

2. Chris' Pancakes, St. Louis, MO - high quality ingredients, great service.

Which one did you go to? Staples Mill Rd or Broad St? Or do you remember? They have great specials every day, great staff, awesome grub. What did you get there?

Just about everytime I stayovernight in Richmond I've been going to the Broad Street Location. I usually order the "Big Breakfast" and get the fried bologna but have also ordered the Country Ham Breakfast probably just as many times. Both are outstanding!

Eggheads in Ft.Bragg is one of my favorite breakfasts. The food's great, the decor is amazing, and there's lots of Wizard of Oz memorabilia. Arrive early or plan to wait.

A yellow brick road on the floor of the restaurant leads out back to the outhouse.

I can vouch for the Chompie's in Tempe (also one in Scottsdale), great bagles (I actually prefer the Bialys) and the Corned Beef Hash is out of this world!

Man, guess where I'm going for breakfast tomorrow (after I vote, of course!)

The Cottage over in Laguna Beach. Wonderful setting and top-notch chow. The Country Breakfast was waaay more than I could handle and very very tasty.

On your way north on I-17 heading out of Phoenix is The Rock Springs Cafe. Been there since 1918, great Road Food any time of the day, the PENNY'S PIES are unbelievable, and quite famous in these parts.

If you get up to Flagstaff visit the Cafe Express in the downtown area. Probably the best Biscuits and Gravy I've ever had! You can also get a mean Latte there.

Ok--i no particular order---
Morning Thunder in Chico Calif---huge meals that serve two--great cafe and the best looking waitresses in the country! Nice folks!

Pancake Pantry in Nashville--the real deal and a favorite of alot of musicians--and trust those musicians KNOW their breakfasts!

Cafe DuMonde---what can i say--to eat here means YOUR IN NOLA!!! and that in itself make it wonderful!!!

Chinatown in Oakland or SanFrancisco--very early ams!!!! Awesome!!!---

The Pasty shop out behind the Bookshop Santas Cruz in Santa Cruz Ca---1st get a Latte at Santa Cruz Roastintin Company then get pastry and sit out in the patio.

The Med""--or Mederterainian if you must---on University Ave in Berzerkly Califonia!!!

that little shop on the ground level of my daughters building on Lorimar street in Brooklyn with the killer breakfasts in a roll that New Yorkers crave!

It's Tops Coffee Shop on Market Street in the Castro District has been around since the 30's. The same family has owned it since the 50's. We ate at the counter and talked to the owner/chef while enjoying some of the greatest egg dishes and pancakes on the west coast. They serve burgers, fries, malts, and banana splits for the lunch crowd. The lemon Cokes are not to be missed while playing your favorite oldies on the juke box.

Food you gotta be airline. I recognize all those places from many years of flying except The Coffee Cup - Omlettes & Grits- Pensacola FL, PegLeg's -Oysters - Pensacola Beach, FL and Mcguires Irish Pub - Pub Food - Pensacola FL. I recognize them because I pass them almost daily...........live in Gulf Breeze. All of them are great but I think my very favorite and the one I most miss is Carnegie Deli- Classic Jewish Deli- NYC. The whole New York thingi was great.......

In Los Angeles don't miss Dupars for the ultimate in pancakes
(not sure of all locations, but I believe one is located at the Farmer's Market next to CBS Televison City on Fairfax)

In San Francisco don't miss Sears Fine Foods at Union Square.

I haven't thought about DuPar's in a long time, but count me as a fan, too. Though the food has always been good, I like it just as much for the authentic coffee shop atmosphere. As far as I know, there are three of them. Besides the Farmer's Market location (my favorite), they have one in Studio City and the one in Thousand Oaks is in a hotel.

Try Toast in Ferndale, Michigan (Woodward Avenue). Fabulous...that's all I can say.

Also Silver Grill Care on Walnut Street in Fort Collins, Colorado. Buy a coffee mug with your name on it. Great daily specials!

There's a new breakfast/lunch place in Toms River called "SHUT UP & EAT!". It has great food, reasonable prices, and a fun atmosphere. The waitresses wear pajamas, the walls are covered with an eclectic mix of odds & ends, photos, toys, etc. and the bathroom is a real hoot! Try their stuffed french toast and their garlic-cheddar grits casserole.

I had already posted my top 10 breakfast places, but I recently ate at a place that definitely belongs on the list. That would be The Breakfast Club in Dayton, Ohio. The ham & cheese omelette I had was as good as they come and the potato pancakes were not too far behind. The photos I took of these itams can be found on the review. Now, as to which restaurant in my top 10 The Breakfast Club displaces.....

The Cornerstone in Frenchtown, NJ for pancakes and scrapple. Their homemade strawberry syrup is also good.
Mom's in Ringoes NJ has about 10 different styles of pancakes, including gingerbread.
As for chain restaurants, nothing beats Crackerbarrel.

Was a place called The Burning Bush in Gatlinburg TN there breakfest was amazing. They were bought up by a chain and now I'm not sure if it's even open anymore

The Bisbee Breakfast Club in the Lowell District of Bisbee, AZ.
Best food in Cochise County.
Be prepared to wait. Octoginarians coming from Church, Bikers coming from Tucson and Sierra Vista and Golfers coming from Naco.

Yes, this place was bought out by the small Apple Barn Chain. The Apple Barn is fine for breakfast but not nearly as good as The Burning Bush. Our family loved that place.........small and not as tourist oriented (and no bus tours) as is the Apple Barn chain. It is too bad as we really looked forward to eating there.

Does anyone know where to get a great Breakfast in Milwaukee?

Just remembered a place that i should have put on my list---in Menlo Park originally--may be in Palo Alto now--Late for the Train!--wonderful place-thwe new location is really inviting and the foods great--but i must admit--i miss the original spot-next to the tracks and close to Kepplers-(my all time favorite bookstore), right in downtown Menlo Park. Their scones were AWESOME!

Charleston's worst place could do better. Except the corned beef at the Waldorf in NYC

Farmer Boys in SoCal (a small chain) was excellent.

I find that the breakfast places with the lines on Sunday mornings do not support my general rule that if you see a line for food, get in it. Secondly, if the first thing you hear about a b'fast place is that they have huge portions, that is NOT a reason to go there. Quality counts.

Pann's Coffee Shop: La Tijera Blvd in L.A. (A Googie style coffee shop I've been enjoying since I was 3. Pork chops and eggs, pork chops and eggs....)

Johnson's Corner Restaurant & Bakery, Right off I-25 in Loveland, CO (best ham and cheese omelet I've ever had. They bake their own huge cinnamon rolls and they're great)

The Original Pantry: Downtown L.A. (my Dad used to take me here when I was a tot. Everything's good))

Farmer Boys: Fontana and other locations (cheap and good, especially the chili-cheese omelete. Great coffee, and they'll start a new pot for you if you ask)

Duke's Coffee Shop: On the Sunset Strip in WeHo (Idiot's Delight...... they also have real hominy grits....... in L.A. of all places)

Millie's Restaurant & Bakery: Fontana and other locations (small So Cal chain, great breakfasts, huge portions, not cheap, but worth it)

Dinah's Family Restaurant: Sepulveda & Centinela, L.A. (Chicken and eggs with buttermilk pancakes or the German pancake with lemon and confectioners sugar)

DuPar's: 3rd & Fairfax, L.A. (Great pancakes, crappy meatloaf)

Waffle House: No particular location, eaten at too many to single one out.

Drove down to Tucson from Phoenix on Sunday wqith the mission to have breakfast at Gus Balon's. They were closed! Hours are Mon-Sat 7 to 3 [|)][|)]

Taco Cabana - Even though a chain, their barbacoa breakfast tacos are really good!

• Benji's in Milwaukee, even though someone beat me to it, and I'm still royally pissed at Bud Selig for the new stadium,
• Frank's Diner in Kenosha, WI, but be warned, it's downtown, and be prepared to wait a while. When you go, get a garbage plate with home made bread,
• George Webb's, but more for people watching than the food. Nothing wrong with the food, but it's not ten-best-list-worthy.
• Apple Holler in Sturtevant, just off the Evil I (94) in Racine County. Quite good for a buffet, but there are some duds, so sample. Also, they change over to the lunch buffet at noon, and you still get to pig out.

I stopped at four because I need to hit three Chicago icons I've heard so many raves about:

• Richard Walker's,
• Lou Mitchell's, partly because it's super close to Union Station and on Route 66, but I've heard raves about the omelettes,
• Ann Sather's.

To make the list my ten best, I'll include

• Any Boy or Girl Scout Troop that's hosting a breakfast,
• Any church that's hosting a breakfast, and not just Christian, as the use of the word "church" would imply,
and,
• Any firehouse, police station, or rescue squad that's hosting a breakfast.

Just got back from Wisconsin and I think I have found my very favorite breakfast place....The Wife says it is the best she has ever eaten at. It is this really roadfood little place called Jen's Alpine Soup kitchen. It has been at the same location in Baraboo WI. since 1930.

I tried the cornbeef hash with over easy eggs, Real home made Cornbeef has with excellent potatoes, eggs done perfect.

Also the Applewood smoked bacon the real deal.

The Coffee is midwest light, good but I prefer a darker brew in the a.m.

The Decor is old oak booths with little mirrors set in. Really a treasure.

If you are over that way I would suggest you try it out, also they have great lunch special at very reasonible prices.

thanks for mentioning the windsor diner..my father owned that diner back in the early
60's when it was called the cherry hill diner.
cherry hill was still deleware township back then.
i grew up in that diner.
