Those who drink wine, fruity beers, perrier etc: you should not be BBQing. Find some nice brie and go watch Merlin Rouge.

Seriously I like most imports and some of the Sierras...given a choice, English beer is the way to go eg Boddingtons etc. Others?

Usually I'm really hot and sweaty when I'm Q'in, so I go for a nice pale domestic beer.

Only one - ice cold Bud in a frosty glass or from a bottle pulled from a tub of ice, or from a can or from an IV - wait, that's four. Or from a straw, or from a funnel, oh well, I needed about six to finish off the plate of ribs.

Lone Star.... I do admire your taste Shiner's is the one!

Now here is the math that proves the point...
Doing a good Brisket takes about 12 hours in the smoker/cooker...
There are 12 Shiner's in each container that I purchase.
Is it just me , or is there a correlation here?

Now to take this to the next level (Algebra II).

If you increase the number of folks at the BBQ, you multiply the recipe for success to be sure there is enough for everyone...Thus...

If X= One Shiner's Beer and Y= One Whole Brisket Then solve for X in the following problem. How many Shiner's will be needed to successfully BBQ 4 briskets?
Xx12 x Yx4 = Success.

Answer--- 48 Beers or Two Cases or 4 12 packs (per cook)

BTW-- I agree with Seafarer John (see Below). This formula for brewski's is for the Cooking and Preparation Phase only. When Eating time rolls around, Sweet Tea (w/Lemon) is the beverage of choice.

For my BRITU ribs(recipe called Best Ribs in the Universe, smoked 6 hours) I did on the 4th , it was Red Hook Blonde. It was a welcome change from my Atkins diet forced choice of Michelob Ultra or Miller Lite.

Beer, whatever you like, while slow smoking and cooking the pig, but cold sweet tea with the meal.

I'm not much of a beer drinker but when BBQ'ing plain ole' Budweiser does it for me. Honestly after the third or forth while standing over hot coals it really doesn't matter. I used to be particularly fond of the small 8 oz. bottles packed in ice that we called nips which isn't available in all states. Was a perfect size to remain cold throughout the period of ingestion.

I guess I am like BigGlenn as I prefer a root beer. But my cooking partner at the contests prefers Shiner Bock or a Mike's hard lemonade.

Here in North Carolina, Bud is the preferred cocktail. Sweet tea with the food. At backyard events, after-dinner drinks sometime come from a jar.

When BBQueing a Santa Maria Tri-tip or good old Kansas Ribs, I like one or two Anderson Valley Hop Ottin IPA's. Good and Cold and Strong.

Next is Sierra Nev. BIGFOOT ALE....There is a reason they call it Bigfoot! The KICK....whew.

While I enjoy the plethora of good micro brews out there, when I am at "the pit" it is ice cold bud to help me through the night

I'll pick an ice-cold Rolling Rock longneck. Or 6.
As Al the Mayor pointed out, they are packaged in convenient-sized units.

I don't drink alot of beer, occasionally on a hot day a cold brew does go good and then I prefer something dark but when yer chowin down on a plate or 3 of of "Q" I agree with seafarer, texas and gordon, sweet tea is the way to go. Of course the afterdinner dranks from a jar are usually accompanied by returns to the platter for extra nibbles

My favorite bee with BBQ is Shiner Bock hands down! Oddly enough I either want a Shiner or something really light like Coors Light when eating BBQ. I don't really care for anything in-between when eating BBQ.

Actually prefer no beer with BBQ. Beer fills you up too much, prefer to load up on the good food instead! Gotta have my tea with BBQ.

Last year i went to Brooklyn Brewery's pigfest, they had whole hog and slaw made by some pitmasterd fron South Carolina, i think. amy way part of the Deal was all you can eat and all the beer you could drink. Brooklyn brewery's East india pale ale worked great, as the hops went very well with the BBQ. I try not to drink Bud, Miller or coors with anything , as they are the McD's/burger king of the beer world

I don't HAVE to have beer when I eat BBQ, but I do need to have something icy cold to drink. Some of my usual choices are:

Iced tea, Coca-Cola, Lone Star beer, lemonade (pink or yellow), milk, or just a big glass of ice water.

I will say that whenever I ask for a beer somewhere, my first choice is always Lone Star. No Lone Star, then Miller (MGD or Hi-Life), or Fosters. Budweiser is my 'fall back on it because you can find it everywhere' pick. I never drink Shiner because it's too dry for my taste. Also, I never drink a light/lite/diet anything and I have the figure to prove it.

Rolling Rock longneck is far the best with Memphis BBQ also there is a tap room that has the draft(drought)on Beal Street.I found out the other afternoon that a cold RR bath makes a wax worm more relaxed when he is about to meet his brim(brem) fish brother.I was on a mission to feed and release to let the little fish grow for a few months.Pepsi and iced tea without sugar also go well with Q.In this part of the world the sugar or no sugar tea question is like a line marked in the sand or here mud.?

I like something on the lighter end of the spectrum -- no darker than a dark amber, say, and definitely nothing like a porter or stout, that's just WRONG. Within that range, there are a lot of beers that will do the job, but I definitely find that something with some hop presence provides the best contrast for barbecue, the crispness of the hops offsetting the richness of the q. Once in a great while, I want something like a weissbier/Belgian white -- that can work too.

Nothing by Coors, EVER -- and that includes Killian's and Blue Moon. They're skunks and they make skunky beer.

I have to stay with Bud. Or Bud Light. The crisp sound of the twist-off cap (never a can!) complements the atmosphere of the occasion, much as popping a Champagne cork would. And the crip assault of the first sip of the Bud is something of a lietmotif for the meal yet to come.

As we gnaw the bones, Bud stands well as a companion beverage, never pretentious, a balanced light brew, yet hardy, against the assault of a penetrating dry rub, or a clinging tomato-based sauce, on an earthy meat such as beef or pork. Conversely, the lightness of a Bud stands well with lighter meats, such as a well-marinated chicken leg. And cuts well across the tanginess of a classic hot dog and mustard.

Post-prandial, a Bud is a very appropriate beverage while reposing and reflecing with good friends on the meal just completed. Again, light, crisp and with an appropriate balance of hops and yeast, Bud complements the watermelon desert. A fine way to end a fine meal.

And so on.

Widmer Hefeweizen with a lemon wedge. Or a tall crisp glass of Pilsner, such as Staropramen, or Spaten. Rolling Rock is also very good.

The sweetness of most Barbeque sauces makes the sweet "kiddy" beers like Budweiser (and even Heineken) inappropriate. I recommend Samuel Adams or perhaps Dos Equis. The bitter, hoppy taste of those brews is the perfect foil for the sweetness of barbeque.

Drinking a sweet beer with barbeque is like drinking soda while eating layer cake. It might be fine for children, but adults should have the palate for something less sweet.

Here in the Mile High city, when the Q temp is above 85, a good Wheat Bier (Flying Dog In Heat Wheat) does a good job. When the temp slides below 40, a good porter, ( Wasatch Polagamy Porter) will make the Q just right

sad sad sad... i82much is the only one that got it right.

Let's get one thing straight. A so called "lite" beer is NOT a beer. It is a major brewery marketing concoction that sucks the testoterone right out of men. You might as well drink chardonnay.

Interesting question. Now when I'm the cook I'll sip a few Bavaias (they're usually cheaper than buds and ten times better) but slack off when the guests arrive. Funny thing is almost no NC BBQ places serve beer.

"Beer is proof that God loves us"-Ben Franklin

So therefor if God Loves us does it really matter which beer we drink with que..... as long as it is good que??

When I lived in the southlands any kind of beer worked as long as it was COLD, but my heart goes out to DIXIE or LONE STAR.

When I drank My choice would have been Dos Equis Amber
(Durn medicine)

Now Ice Cold Tea (unsweet, durn diabetes) with sweet and low.

I did a couple of 6 pounder Pork Butts in my smoker on Saturday. It was 90plus with humidity to match. I had one six-pack of SHINER'S to last the time necessary for the Butts to go the whole-route. It didn't happen. Even holding to the one-an-hour rule, I was out of SHINER'S when the meat reached 160 degrees. I went in the house and drank cokes for an hour and a half (170 degrees) and then we enjoyed the BBQ! (With sweet tea)

If I'm at my house, Sierra Nevada, Harpoon (Summer or IPA, depending on the availability), Long Trail Ale, Coors Light, or Tanqueray and Tonic.

If I've been invited somwhere, then the host's preference (if I know it).

At my brothers, Budweiser.

I brew my own beer. None of that domestic swill for me. In my lagering freezer I have Wurzburger Hofbrau Oktoberfest clone, a nice Helles lager, a beautiful Dunkel lager, and a Spaten Oktoberfest clone. Any of them will do beautifully with a barbecue.

I prefer a lighter beer like Bud or Coors when I'm over the smoker but, with the meal I like sun tea without sugar or lemon. I don't like anything to get in the way of that great smokey flavor. I agree with carolinabill in that beer fills you up too much. I would much rather fill up on great B.B.Q.!!!

Interesting question, but I'd defintitely go for something light. Certainly not the piss water of Keystone or Nati light, but I could see having a Shiner Bock or Sam Adams with my 'que. Honestly though (and this might surprise many), I've never had barbeque and beer in the same sitting...
