Store bought, served in a restaurant, even homemaid. Do you have some favorites?

I stumbled onto a bottle of Chi-Chi's Feista Roasted Tomato Salsa, pretty good suff! It's anouther one of my Big Lots finds.

I also love the sauce served at El Fenix around the DFW area. I grew up slerping down that stuff so, maybe that's why I like it so much.

I have had some great homemaid sauces over the years. My sweety has an old family recipe that she used to can at Chrismas. It was a highly sough after gift item by the family and friends. Her health is not so great now and she had to stop making it. Great stuff though!

I really like La Mexicana Salsa. My supermarket keeps in in the produce aisle near the refrigerated dressings. Good stuff - very fresh tasting for store bought salsa.

Griller, I tried a search for topics for this but could'nt find anything. The search feature here messes up sometimes though.

Nice picture Efuery! Looks like some good stuff. Fresh, not canned is neat. I will give that a try. My local stores don't have it though. I will have to go to the big city.

I prefer La Victoria Salsa Suprema, Medium. Mainly because it is the only salsa out there with no onions just peppers, garlic, and tomatoes... I doctor it up with chives and cilantro and let it sit for awhile in the fridge..good stuff!

I got 2 jars of salsa as gifts, Peach and Rasberry Chipolte, made by Mrs Renfro's. I hav'nt tried them yet but hey, it's different! A chicken recipe is on the peach jar, and one for pork chops on the rasberry, interesting.

I buy only 2 types: Herdez chunky, the hot type, in the bottle. I top my eggs off with that lovely stuff every morn.

Pico Pica bottled table sauce, hot variety. Great for tacos, fried eggs, bla bla

Neither of these have the flavor killing ingredient vinegar. That's very important to me. Neither does the next entry:

My all time favorite is my own homemade pico de gallo. It don't git better than that.

I'm not a big salsa fan....and after 14 years in Texas, that's amazing in itself. But I usually like the fattening stuff with my chips...guac, queso etc. But we just moved back to St. Louis and I have to admit, I LOVE Chevy's salsa. Not too spicy and very smokey. Now the hubby and me actually fight over it!

I like the stuff that's made in NEW YORK CITY!!! That'd be Goya, which is really made somewhere in New Jersey. I also like to crack a can of tomatos and toss them in the KitchenAid with peppers~n~onions. Of course, some fruits make good salsa, too, like peaches and strawberries. Hell, MOST berries are great.

Welcme to roadfood Rhonda! Sounds like Chevy's is made with roasted tomatoes. Pleanty of copycat recipes for us folks still here in Texas. It's a long way to St. Louis! sounds like folks love that salsa.

Mitch, sounds like the peach, and the rasberry, salsa I got for Christmas might be good. I'll try them soon.

I've been lurking for quite awhile now....lived in Dallas for almost 14 years but thankfully back home in the Midwest!

Have to admit, if I had to eat salsa, Gloria's in Dallas was pretty good, I love cilantro, but I was usually too busy filling up on their yummy black bean dip. That place is the only thing about Dallas I'll miss.....

I'm with Grillmeister and Enginecapt, store-bought has got to be Herdez. Here in AZ, I often buy the salsa from Que Bueno Restaurant in Fountain Hills, winner of best salsa every year at the Southwest Salsa Challenge in Scottsdale. It's addictive.

This ain't salsa, but if you like to dip, grab this next time you're in Safeway. Be sure to heat it, grab some chips and have at it! Man is it good!

Well, my reply disappeared somewhere!!!

Anyway, they started out in Oak Cliff on Davis (we used to live a few blocks from there) and now are on Lemmon in Oak Lawn, on Greenville Ave and I think another up in Addison or N. Dallas. I still like the original the best though. Their prices have sure gone up since we started going in '92, but the food is still delicious!

My splurge salsa is the Frontera brand, owned by (or somehow affiliated with) Rick Bayless of Frontera Grill fame. They do 8-10 kinds of "classic" salsas that are ALL good, if expensive. The green tomatillo one is my favorite.

I also vote for the Herdez brand. My favorite is the red taqueria style salsa, no chunks of onion, pepper etc, nice simple flavorful salsa. My 2nd fav is the Herdez chili verde salsa. In a pinch a makes a wonderful sauce for pork chili verde.

I also enjoying making my own.

I usually buy diced tomatoes in a can with onion and cilantro and garlic added in.

I add more cilantro, garlic, fresh onion, bell and jalapeno peppers, olive oil, lime juice and let it chill for several hours.

It gets better as it gets older. I add salt when I use because I have found when I salt as I compound, it causes some of the contents to decompose.

I use LOT'S of cilantro.
Let me think about it, so I post it properly.
Check your email.

Here it is in case anyone else wants to see it.
----------------------------------------------
Tara’s Homemade Salsa
This makes for a very colorful, and tasty salsa.

3# FRESH Ripe Red Tomatoes (I normally use Roma's)
2 clove garlic (smashed)-personal taste here, use what you like
2 jalapeno peppers-seeded and finely minced-personal choice here-use what you like
Half red onion -finely chopped
Half white onion-finely chopped
1 whole bunch cilantro –finely chopped (stems removed)
Half red bell pepper-finely chopped
Half yellow bell pepper-finely chopped
Half green bell pepper-finely chopped
Juice of 2 limes—taste preference can be applied here also
I also use (to taste) McCormicks hot salt-I start out with ½ TBLSP
Dash of cayenne pepper
Black pepper

Put tomatoes, garlic, jalapenos, cilantro, lime juice and spices into food processor.
Process until a consistency your prefer.
Just remember if you cut back on the processing time, depending on the size of your jalapenos, you may be taking a zesty bite of the pepper, unless it is finely minced.
(I like chunky salsa)
You can add onions and pepper’s to the processor at the end to blend better.
(Take out and add remaining ingredients.-If not added during blending)
Taste for salt content, and add more if needed.
Chill to let flavors blend. (preferably overnight)..
Just remember, all ingredients can be altered for taste preferences.
You also may want to add a touch of sugar to modify acid content from tomatoe's.

Rossy,
That sounds like a nice salsa....If I can find it....I have one that a friend at work would bring in on food days...she called in Salsa Gringo...you could just sit in front of it with a spoon and eat it.
A second one I have is very sweet...used a bunch of sugar in it. It wasn't too good with chips ...but we used to make a breakfast pizza, and would use the sweet sauce on top of the crust like you would a tomato sauce, then load it up with all of you regular breakfast stuff...sauage, bacon, potatoes and scrambled eggs, layer your favorite cheese on top and bake it till brown and cheese melted....YUM the salsa just really kicked it off.
