Oh yeah, why: It tastes so bready, yeasty crisp and fresh, especially with a squeeze of lemon, and isn't bitter like an ale. I don't do bitter.

There was an on-going Sam Adams contest on the New York City station with Opie & Anthony,called "Sex For Sam" If you were willing to have sex in a public place and let it be broadcast, you would win Sam Adams Beer.

The beer in my fridge this week is Kansas City's own Boulevard Pale Ale. Most pale ales are generally from microbrewery's and tend to be good. This one is one of the better ones.

Thanks to CSD working his cart in front of Milwaukee's Lakefront Brewery, I got a chance to try their new Cattail Ale. Nice and hoppy with a very clean, dry finish. This is a beer I really enjoy.

I used to perform at Dogfish Head when I lived in Delaware. They paid o.k. but they were really generous with the beers...making sure I always had a full pint on stage and giving me a six pack sampler to take back to Wilmington. Sam and the boys are always pushing the envelope; some of their beers are downright wacky. 120 minute IPA? what's next? hop lozenges?
I lived in Boulder in the early 90's and used to love drinking pints at Walnut and the pub at the Rockies brewery.
Last spring I sat in the Rogue Brewhouse in Portland, OR. drinking a variety of great beer. Had a huge ploughman's platter of local cheeses and charcuterie along with some bread baked with Rogue ale...a bargain at 12 bucks. My favorite liquor store has a nice selection of the large format Rogues here in B.R. I love the Shakespeare Stout.
Whenever I visit my Dad up in Loudoun county VA. we always stop in at the Dominion Brewery. My dad was a wine guy for years but is completely nuts for their Oak Barrel Stout. They age the stuff in used bourbon casks but, as I understand it, they're having a hard time sourcing enough barrels and have, at least for the bottled version, resorted to using vanilla and oak chips. Still damn tasty. They also contract brew Tuppers' Hop Pocket ale and pils. The ale may get my vote for favorite brew. It is powerfully hoppy on the nose and in the finish but the hops are well integrated, unlike some "hop teas" I've tried. The San Diego uber IPA's are like drinking terpentine. It took the California wine makers a while to learn restraint, too. Hugely ripe fruit, high alcohol and tons of oak make a big impression but they were horrible with food and tiring to drink by themselves. There has been a move away from this style in California wine and I hope the "Extreme Beer Dudes" in SoCal eventually return to their senses and make something that doesn't taste like beer concentrate.
Speaking of which, Coors and Yuengling both brew a concentrate and add local water at the regional bottling plants. There was a time when people sought out Coors, they thought it was different than budmiller...the power of suggestion, boy. It's all the same backwash to me.

This is news to me. I don't know how you could do that. What is your source?

The Coors thing I've known for a while now. It even says on cans of Coors Light something to the effect of "born in the rocky mountains and packaged in the shenandoah valley." It saves a lot of money to ship the concentrate and add water later on. The Yuengling dirty secret I learned from Jerry Bailey, ex-president of Dominion Brewery (ex as of this month, he just sold to AB and a Baltimore regional brewer) on one of my many visits to his wonderful northern Virginia facility.
And on the subject of Dominion and their fine beers, I hope Anheuser Busch doesn't screw them up. The new name, by the way, will be Coastal Brewing. If you've been to the brewery in Ashburn you know why that is worth at least a chuckle. I'm sure it tested well in focus groups, though...

I can agree on the IPAs. They all seem to be fairly good. Right now I have Summit IPA in my fridge along with Big Hole Brewery Headstrong Ale and Tommyknocker Doppelbock Lager.

I love Guinness, and Grolsch was my first non-American beer. I loved the old swing-top bottles; when emptied, washed, and dried they make great bottles for homemade salad dressing.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, generally available for a few weeks starting just before Thanksgiving, is my favorite. Most years I buy a couple of cases and run out around the end of March.

Pilsner Urquell was my favorite for years, but it has serious problems with condition (like most beers in green glass) and they simplified the brewing process back in the early 1990's without quite preserving all the character.

My day to day beer is either Sierra Nevada (when I can get it on sale) or Long Trail (because it is on sale regularly around here). I enjoy just about any of small-brewery ales, though some IPAs go a bit far for me.

Here's a thought. If a beer bottle still has a regular cap and not a twist off cap then maybe you can believe the brewer still cares. Not always the case but often.

Sorry, Coors is only shipped as a whole unit!! Rocky Mountain spring water ONLY!!! That is their trademark. Not only that, it is also one of the only beers that are kept refrigerated from the time they are bottled until delivery. That is one of the reasons that you couldn't get it east of the Mississippi River as it was too costly to ship cold and Coors would not let the product be shipped warm. Budweiser is mixed locally but not Coors. Please recheck your sources again as I am sure that you are wrong!

Coors brews a stronger version and adds water on site. I've known this for years. My source? I just did a cursory internet search and found a piece from the Rocky Mountain News confirming it. You sound like you're defending Coors. I can't imagine why.

David O, man I hate to be rude, but this could very well be the most incorrect post I have ever read on here. Virtually everything you say is incorrect.

1.Coors is not only shipped as a whole unit. (see above article)

2. Coors does NOT only use only " Rocky Mountain Water ", they have been brewing in Virginia since the mid 80's, and also have a brewery in Tenn.

3. The shipping cold bit is so wrong as to almost be amusing, and certainly had nothing to do with its availability in the 70's. Where did you ever hear such a thing ? Coors beer is shipped just like every other beer, ask any bartender or beer distributor.

Right now I am drinking an August Schell FireBrick all malt Vienna style lager.

Any beer made by the Ithaca Beer Company but especially Partly Sunny. This is a great interpretation of a Belgian Witbier. A couple of fresh, ice cold growlers right out of their taps at the brewery and believe me, life doesn't get much better!

I must admit I was wrong on point 3 in my above post. I spoke to the local beer distributor,and he said the Coors brewed in Colorado is still shipped from the brewery cold. He found it rather amusing however, as he said that hardly any of the distributors store it cold,and most of the retailers dont store it cold, so whats the point ?? ( doesnt really matter to me, I dont drink the stuff)

The Coors brewed in VA is not shipped cold, however.

Anyway, I apologize for accusing another poster of being wrong, when in fact on one point it was me who was wrong.

plenty of good beer up here in seattle, but lately i've become rather fond of 2 beers from the south: arrogant bastard ale from stone brewing in california, and dead guy ale from rogue ales in oregon. both are very dark, both are very tasty :) both are also 7%..

for those imperial stout fans...here are my two picks for today. i was hoping to find an older rogue but 2006 was all that was available in my area right now. if you haven't had the oak aged yeti you are missing out.

Does someone have confirmation that Yuengling ships concentrate to its other plants? I toured the original brewery on the side of a hill surrounded by private houses in Pottsville, PA. I didn't see any signs of concentrate being shipped.

The only thing they don't brag about is that they now have three breweries. There is one in Port Carbon, PA they built from the ground up. It is only a few miles from Pottsville. The problem is that there is no room to expand the original brewery in Pottsville. They also bought a brewery in Tampa, Florida from Stroh. That Tampa brewery was a Schlitz brewery before that. Since the Tampa brewery was self sufficient, there is no reason they couldn't produce beer from scratch there.

In fact we stopped in tonight at Kclingers and I had the Blue Point Sour Cherry Stout, Corsendonk Brown and the Bell's Brown Ale on draught. My wife had the Blue Point Cherry Stout and a Chimay White.

Counted up my drafts and bottles we've had at Kclingers in the past couple of years and I'm sitting at 326 different beers. I've had some mighty fine beers there over the years. Among my favorites styles are Porters, Stouts (Imperials, Oatmeals, Chocolates, Milks & Creams) RauchBiers, Lambics and IPAs.

I recently tried the Rhoades' Scholar Stout from[url='http://www.southshorebrewery.com/products/index.html']South Shore Brewery[/url] and was very favorably impressed. To my uncultured palate it falls somewhere between an oatmeal stout and Guinness.

Son of a... this might take a while.

-Guinness: my default chain GOOD beer, always better from the tap (this is the case with any brew though). Especially good on cold winter nights. One of my favorite Guinness memories was enjoying a couple of pints in a Dublin bar while watching traditional Irish dancing/music. Can't get much better than that.

-Corona: a good, light, summertime beer - always better with the lime. This is more my "activity" beer, aka if I'm in a crowded bar or club and don't want to be bogged down by something heavier. I've heard people claim that Dos Equis is better, and that is a good beer in and of itself, but Corona has just the right amount of lightness for my tastes.

-Blue Moon: great, fruity wheat beer. As with Corona, having the fruit (in this case, orange slice) with the pint is an essential. Recommended for those who like sweet beers, or those who don't usually go for a Mike's Hard Lemonade instead of beer. For me at least, this is the best beer to have with food (particularly chicken wings).

-Hebrew Ale (get it?): ok, it was more of a gimmick beer for me at first. It's grown on me since, though. Goes down smooth with a great aftertaste. Lchaim.

-Killian's Red: nice middle of the road texture to it. This one just brings back fond memories for me since it's one of the main beers I drank during college, along with Pilsner Urquell. It's not spectacular, but it's not crap either.

-Samuel Smith Taddy Porter: richer than Guinness. 'Nuff said.

-Chimay Red: pretty good. Kind of has an herby flavor to it, though I haven't had it enough times to give it a fair rating... usually because it's so damn expensive.

Those are a few, anyways. You will NEVER, EVER NEVER, NEVER EVER, EVER NEVER hear me praise the great taste of anything such as Natural Light, Keystone, Coors, or any other horse-piss water passing as "beer." I consider these and similar types to be "utility beer", aka ONLY good for drinking games like beer pong, flip cup, etc. The only slight exception I'll make is for Bud Light, and I'll only have that if there's a special on it in the bar I'm watching the game in.

The fact that they bought the Florida brewery and built another would suggest they no longer need to brew a concentrate. As of three years ago (again, according to Jerry Bailey)they were diluting on site because their original brewery was tiny and they had made the decision to greatly increase their distribution area. Either way, I find their beers pretty ordinary.

Also there should be a transformation in the human body of what goes in and what comes out. That disqualifies a lot of so called beers.

Tonight my wife and I a couple of our Dive Shop friends headed up to Kclingers in Hanover. The 3 beers that I had off of the tap list tonight were a Brooklyn Summer Ale, a Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA and a Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA.

Hello All.

Female with credentials: I used to work at Dock Street Brewery in Philly back when they brewed great beer on site (I left a while back, curious if it is still any good!). I live in England now, and have - at different times - for almost 6 yrs, been drinking only real ale. So hopefully I have educated taste buds. (My favorite local here in Oxford does 8-10 real ales on tap at a time!)

Beer prefs depend a lot on what your own buds like. That said I am a bitter and darker drinker... usually.

I saw one tiny post that mentioned my all time favorite: Old Peculier. Props to Efeury for the mention. I have been searching for it on tap for many years (or at least checking every pub I enter...!) and FINALLY FINALLY last weeek found it at the Roundhouse in Covent Garden while I was in London.

Also did not manage to find ANY mention of my favorite lager-style beer: Carlsberg's Elephant. Strong but yummy. Try it next time you spot it in your local beverage supplier!

p.s. agree with all the Leinenkugel's posts, like their darker stuff.

I understand the point you're making about Bud being brewed with adjuncts but I can't let you slide on the sweeping generalization about what constitutes beer. Ever drink a hefe or wit? Both brewed with wheat, the latter traditionally flavored with coriander and bitter orange. There are lots of other examples but you see my point. By the way, I see you're stocking summer quaffers for your boat-if you get any of the Oskar Blues beers from Colorado there in Minnesota, try 'em. They're all available in cans as are the beers from Surly Brewing in your home state. Cheers

Stuttgarter Hofbrau and Corona. I still have a soft spot in my heart for San Miguel also, probably from the time I spent in SEA. Never, never drink Coors that mass produced pretend beer. Coors, yech! Blech!

Funny that you should mention San Miguel as I carry that brand at my job. I work at an American Legion Post in Wickenburg AZ an alot of the guys that spent time in the Pacific remember it fondly! We carry the lager, dark and the lite versions. It's not a big seller but we do carry it.

I'm mostly disappointed with the Americanization of beer that actually started way back in the 1870s because Americans adopted a lighter taste that continued right down to the latter light beers. I'm very familiar with the wheat beers but I am not fond of them. I haven't seen an Oskar Blue in Minnesota. Surly's is in very limited supply. Most of it is going to the bars. There is probably no reason I can't take bottles on my boat. It is just that bottles are more cumbersome in a cooler. My wife always hauls a bottle of wine on board. At home I drink mostly Schell's, Summit, Boddington's and Guinness. I like to vary the type of brew and will grab an extra six pack of bottles from all the microbrews.

An ice cold Dos Equis Amber in a frozen glass with a slice of lime squeezed in and just a touch of salt is one of my favorite thirst quenchers. Whenever I eat at a mexican restraunt, this is my drink!

Rogue HazelNut Brown Nectar is one of my favorite treat beers, rich and nutty, but only 1 or 2 of these, pretty high alcohol content! Probably hard to find unless you live in the NW like me.

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock is a great beer, hard to find around here though, I found a bottle in a specialty beer store and wish I would have bought more of it.

There is nothing wrong with Sam Adams, it's a good round the house drinking beer. It sure does beat the hell out of the beer flavored waters out there.

I DO NOT like skunky beers like Corona, New Castle Brown Ale, Heiniken, Mgd. Apparently when beers are put into clear or light green bottles, the ultraviolet light attack and breaks down the isohumulones in the hops. This is what leads to the offensive skunky taste and odor. No wonder people put lime in their Corona's lol. And actually if you like the basic taste of Corona without the skunkiness, try a Pacifico, it's the same beer, just protected in a dark brown bottle

Amen to the comment about fruit and beer not mixing.

My favorite is Schoenling's Little Kings Ale from Cincinnati.

This is my latest find. Why I like it: Locally-brewed wheat beer with the tang of locally-grown oranges. I normally don't like fruity beers, but citrus and hefeweizen complement each other.

Don't have a favorite...great Micro brews now are like great wines...half the fun is in the discovery of another gem....I love the search for another find!!!

I like Newcastle Nut Brown Ale.  It's an English beer--mainly because it has a touch of sweetness to it.  Some people can't detect it, but I can.

As for American beers, there might be some microbrewery out there that will appeal to me, but as far as mass-produced beers in this country, all of them taste like slop to me.

The only exception to that rule was Stroh's.  Now long gone.  Maybe because it was fire-brewed, but for some reason it tasted a lot better than any of the commercial products.  I could get a can of it down the gullet and not vomit later.

I try to keep a stock of Shiner Boch here at home. I like it, and I feel a link to my Czech Heritage thru the Texan Czechs !  Must be the Texas water, since I reall don't care for Pilsner Urquell.

Mass-produced? I do appreciate Mic's Amber Bock when a cold beer is available.

The only mass produced beer I'll drink is Yuengling...On tap it's quite good.

I don't drink so much as I used to, simply because I work two jobs and don't have that much social time. However, my all-time favorite has always been Molson Ice. I always liked the taste of it. Sometimes at dinner, depending on the meal, I might order a Hoegaarden. I think it's just delicious. Unfortunately I'm certain they don't even brew it over there anymore.

My current favorite is the Ranger IPA from New Belgium Brewing Company. On a really hot day I enjoy a Leinenkugel Summer Shandy or a Corona. If I need something cheap and in mass quantity I'll pick up a case of Miller Lite... Then there's the Rock Bottom beers, particularly the chocolate stout, which is mighty tasty.. The list goes on and on..

I was lucky enough to take the tour of Anchor Steam brewery a few weeks ago.  Met Mr. Fritz Maytag an excellent gentleman.
Tried about 7 brews, even the anniversary Humming. 

In two words my favorite is Old Foghorn........Nectar of the Gods!
