UPDATE-
Two weeks from right now we will be meeting up with MH and Lleechef for our 'Hunt-Eve Dinner'. Both Janet and I are really looking forward to this get-together, not only for the freezer-filling hunting, but for a chance to 'hangout' with some long-time RF friends as well.
We are both trying to get more familiar with our primary weapons, shooting targets and 'spinners' at 50-80 yards range from our back deck. We don't shoot center-fire guns often enough to be able to negate the recoil flinch without gettin in some practice now.
If the Hurricane tracks as the TV projects, our hunting ground will get some solid rain by this weekend. Hopefully that will have a positive effect for 'wallows' and waterholes when our time comes.
Meantime the local deer are wandering thru our yard daily. Their days are numbered !

Mr. Mayor, at this point it looks as if lleechef will be going after her boar with a .223 Smith & Wesson M&P 15 using Winchester Razorback ammunition. But, if those low-recoil loads of .30-06 ammunition are "shootable" for her small frame then she'll want to go with her father's Model 70.

Me? I'm just going to enjoy. See you at Zeno's, and I'm sure looking forward to that dinner.

I might bring along a few rounds of .460 S & W Magnum to see whether you can hang on when it belches. from the revolver.

She scored two groups of 4 rounds each under two inches at 50 yards with her 44 magnum carbine.  She tried the ruger 7.62x39 but it is a lot heavier than the other ruger, and her groups with the Mini-30 include Louisville and Indianapolis and St Louis I think...I lost sight of them with my spotting scope !
Got the big coolers out of the garage rafters and rinsed them out today. Won't bag the guns as we still have a week  plus to practice and we both need it.
Slowly but surely we are getting ready.  Both of us are keyed up for this hunt, even as tame as it is.  Indiana just voted today to add a third Doe to the regular deer license bundle they will issue this year. So for $65 a resident gets one Buck and Three Does taken during any of the various seasons...with the correct weapon.  You can then buy up to EIGHT more Doe Tags in our county to add to your take, if you want too.  I think a total of 2 Bucks and 6 Does will be more than we can deal with this year, so we will stay with the basic package.  BTW  As of last week, I no longer need a fishing license here in Indiana, or for Lake Michigan...no trout or salmon stamps either...sometimes growing old isn't so bad !

I need the licenses -- hunting, fishing, etc., as well as deer tags -- but mine are all free. lleechef's all cost a bundle. Speaking of bundles, we just got back from Gander Mountain where she got camouflage stuff -- jacket, shirts, pants and cap.

Under two inches at 50 ought to be fine for hogs, unless she's going to insist on an eye shot.

No she will follow the plan for the basketball in the side of the hog.. Same for the deer.  She is organizing our clothing. Some old camo some old whatever... We will try to plan for this plus the winter hunting season beyond. Watching the weather to see how much rain they get over in that area. Not thinking it will be serious...but should provide wallow holes for the hogs.

Heck, even I can hit a basketball. If I have enough time. And enough ammunition.

Had a bad run of ammo in the 308 today as were were rehearsing the drill for 'READY, AIM, Fire" etc.  Suddenly about 4 rounds FTF, out of the sme box I was working on for several days with no problem. Russian Ammo...I figure they probably have the harder primers...We'll try some Winchecter tomorrow to see it it works ok...If not I will focus on the Ruger 7.62x39. it has been shooting well for me, but not for Janet.

The problem turned out to be a weak firing pin in the 308 Carbine. It is back in the rack, replaced with it's cousin, a Model 100 with rifle length barrel. I took one of last year's hogs with this gun, and in a 10 round test of the same ammo, I got ten good fires with no FTF issues. Will work another 20 rounds thru it to be sure , and bring both the 7.62x39mm and the .308 for me...Janet keeps getting better with her 44 Mag Carbine.  She is ready !
Ammo Bag is stocked up and the Gun-box for cleaning etc is ready.  We are attending a workshop this Friday evening conducted by the Indiana DNR and Purdue Universities Extention Services dealing with butchering and preparing Venison. Samples will be distributed to allow us to taste the various recipes in the demonstration-kitchen. Photos will be taken (if possible).
Next week at this time we should be on the ground in Missouri looking for Porky.

Mike, Have you looked at the Armslist website. I have completed half dozen sell/ trade transactions in a couple of weeks  ...cleared the shelves of some stuff I didn't want to keep.  The Saturday -next- after we return from the hunt we will go to another large auction in Indy. Now that the bills are paid, and the old stock is gone, except for a few 'Keepers', It's time to invest again.

Packing for a hunt and NFL Football...This has got to be a perfect "Man-Day".
Truck is ready and clean, Guns are cased and ready to 'board'.  Half of the covered truckbed is full of large coolers in anticipation of a bunch of dead things being brought home to feed us later.
Ammunition, Yeah we got dem boolets for about every possible target, from bunny to Bison. Bringing two boxes of 30-06 Low-Recoil loads for Lisa to try in her big rifle.
Cooler in the truck with travel beverages and junk-food snacks... it wouldn't be a roadtrip for me without a bag of Fritoes Chili-Cheese chips.
It has been a year since our last multi-day roadtrip, I miss the days gone by with the 6 weeks of seeing America rpic journey's, but we now take what we can do, and give thanks we can go at all.
Hopefully we will have a good photo record to share next weekend.

We haven't started loading up yet, but I did realize that I need to go buy another cooler. I forgot that I left one at lleechef's parents' house in Pennsylvania. Everything's set and ready to go -- except for packing up clothing.

lleechef and I had to cancel this week's boar hunt with Al and Janet at the last minute. lleechef came down with a bad case of flubugitis. I set up a new hunt at the same place for November.

Thank you Ann. But you see, she was going to hunt, not I. I was just going along. I've hunted my share of boars. Lisa has never done so.

You should see what they build, Well maybe you cant see.....Not even with Radar, and its mobile and deadly, I modified the stability legs and installed them on the Prototype, It is no secret so I can talk about it, but it is pretty neat.

                                                  Friends-
We arrived home safely this afternoon. Our freezer now has over 630 lbs of boneless (except for the ribs) Pork and Venison. This ranch is absolutely fantastic, friendly, very nice accomodations, More animals than Yellowstone, and a staff that really cares about their visitors.  I will do a major trip report shortly... Got an auction in Indy tomorrow morning, then get photos organized.  There were only two other hunters in the camp with us. With thousands of acres full of game.  It was literally like hunting in Yellowstone with no other folks around.
Plus the food was outstanding...dinner last night was red-stag brisket and Bison meatloaf.  Film coming.
We missed MH and Lisa bigtime, AND have already made a reservation next Spring for elk and bison.
A teaser photo.. Janet uses her nurse-suit as Easter Bunny Cammo colors to confuse the hogs...It worked. Here she is with our guide Jason, . She nailed a 300 plus lb Hog with one shot in the ear from about 50 yards....using my walking cane for a shooting brace,

I had the camera, so when I shot my Hog, we got images of the Hog but not of the shooter.  Here are two Hogs, hanging after field cleaning and ready for the full processing.  These two..Janet's is the brown/white and the black/white is mine, both tipped the scales well over 300 lbs. Mine is a Sow, while Janet's is/was a neutered male. They look like 1st generation Feral Hogs, still retaining much of the domestic hog appearance....but they ran with a big herd of mixed background pigs...some like this and some with the long snout and bristle back rough hair.
Here they are..ready to meet the BBQ !
