I was a Nestle Quick drinker my whole life, then a couple of years ago I decided to go ahead and try the famed Ovaltine product a la A Christmas Story....and I'm hooked. I think what really caught my eye was the fact that it claims to have more vitamins, etc. than Quick; I haven't compared them but I'm happy with Ovaltine enough to not even bother checking their claim.
And I don't know about ya'll, but only I can make my own drink. I never liked it when someone else mixed it for me, I always thought it was gross.

well, there's two types of Ovaltine: chocalate malt and chocolate.
I can't stand malt either so of course I just go for regular chocolate. NaaMikey, please tell me, I'm from south Texas home of sweet iced tea, but what is an egg cream and how do you make it? when I was young I read Harriet the Spy and she always drank those. An egg cream is Fox's U-bet syrup mixed into a glass of milk and then you add seltzer to it! You can you use any chocolate syrup, but Fox's is the original.

I like the Ovaltine chocolate malt flavor the best.

And naxet76 you can probably find U-bet chocolate syrup if you have a Walmart supercenter near you. Ask if they have a Kosher food section. They have it here in OK.

I grew up on Nestlés Quick. The only malt I remember was chocolate malted ice cream bars. Yum!

One night I was watching Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery where people were drinking Horlick's (no comment's PLEASE - I've heard them all) which was a malt drink that British children (and soldiers drank). Next day I tracked it down at the supermarket - not next to the Marmite but close.

I am now a devoted malt fan - Ovaltine, Horlicks etc. And yes, I do put it on ice cream like enginecapt. Try it with the chocolate Ovaltine - excellent!

It was both of them when I grew up, with Quick drank 3-1. It has been Ovaltine for some time. Whether it is the regular or malt flavor does not matter as I have a jar of malt that I can add. There is chocolate syrup and I can mix some or all together for my milkshakes.

When it comes to chocolate milk, it seems that the best and richest type is in the cartons next to the regular stuff.

Nesquik had just started advertising that they have 25% less sugar than other leading powders and syrups (presumably Ovaltine and Hersheys?). I don't know whether this is just a comparison to counter Ovaltine's more-vitamins claim, or whether they have reformulated Quik. But this thread prompted me to email the company and ask! I'll let you know the reply. (We've never tried Ovaltine but my kids enjoy ridiculing their commercials!)

I prefer Quik, but with a catch. I put in half what they call for, then add a packet of Equal to balance the sweetness level so it tastes just right for me.

yeah, I've seen those commercials, too. I was thinking the same thing, they probably don't have the same vitamins as Ovaltine so they're using the "less sugar" tactic. I don't mind Quick but I totally prefer Ovaltine now--despite their silly commercials!

Here's the response:

March 30, 2007

Dear Nestlé Consumer,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us about Nestlé® Nesquik®. We welcome questions and comments from loyal consumers such as yourself and appreciate this opportunity to assist you.

Nestlé Nesquik developed a new proprietary break-through manufacturing process that allows the delivery of great Nesquik taste with 25% less sugar! Extensive research and taste tests were performed in which Nesquik 25% was overwhelmingly chosen as the best tasting product. 88% of Nesquik consumers who tried the product said that the sweetness was "just right". Nesquik is still fortified to provide 33% more calcium than milk alone, is 99.9% caffeine free, and is also a source of Vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals to help build strong bones.

This reformulation caused the density (weight) of the product to change. It is now lighter in weight; however, the serving size and amount of servings per package have not changed. Additionally, there is a noticeable color difference in the strawberry flavor. When mixed with milk, it will have the same great appearance. The new formulation does not contain any artificial sweeteners and also improves the solubility so that Nesquik now dissolves more easily into milk.

At Nestlé, we are dedicated to you and your family throughout every phase of your lives. Your feedback is valuable to us, as it helps us to improve our products and services. We will report your comments to our Marketing personnel.

We appreciate your interest in our products and hope you will visit our website often for the latest information on our products and promotions.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Romano

QUIK and BOSCO! Quik was the main ingredient in the home-made hot fudge sauce that was on my 'chore list' to make each week. My parents loved it on their ice cream that was a Sunday treat in our home for years. I would melt some butter, add QUIK and a little water and heat it up. Mother had a 'gravy boat' set aside for the sauce when I finished my 'cooking'. Any leftovers after treat-topping would be spooned onto graham crackers and refrigerated for school lunchbox snacks.

BOSCO was ever-present also, but I never had the craving for it that I developed for that buttery fudge sauce that was QUIK !

I happen to have orignal and less sugar strawberry Quick and there is a difference in the color. The original has a darker pink color to it and a more intense strawberry smell. The less sugar one is way more pale. As for taste....i'm not a fan of any kind of milk except chocolate milk, so sorry. Naxet 76, my oldest son used to love strawberry Quik, until an unfortunate episode of carsickness. My daughter's nine-year-old friend will only drink milk if it's pink (strawberry Quik), even on her cereal! Everyone else looks at it in horrified fascination. I wonder if she has noticed the difference that you mentioned. I have one of those huge cannisters of original chocolate Quik. Maybe I'll buy a new cannister before the old one it totally empty for comparison.

I have never tried Ovaltine, always wanted to, but I can't, and here's why:

I am addicted to Quik. I'm not kidding or exaggerating, and don't consider thinking of it as an addiction as a lessening of that term. I literally have to have it at night before bedtime. If I don't, I get a headache, my stomach goes in knots, I can't go to sleep. It sounds absurd for a 36 y.o. male, and it is; not to mention the unhealthy effect of dumping a load of sugar in my bloodstream as I sleep. If we go somewhere, to stay w/ relatives for example, it's somewhat embarassing; it's not like I can hide it or say we brought some chocolate milk with us for the kids, it has to be quik powder mixed in 2% milk.

If it didn't sound so stupid, I'd talk to my doctor about it.

I thought Bosco was some shi-shi coffee. Is it mocha flavored syrup, perhaps?

I don't chocolify my milk. I do put all sorts of funky stuff in coffee, though. Junior Mints and Hershey's Caramel Kisses are great. Don't try that if you don't usually take cream in your coffee, though. Now that Easter's done, I can get my Peeps for half price and add them to my coffee.

Yes the canned stuff is thicker and richer and chocolateery.

as a kid sneaking down to the fridge in the middle of the night, taking that yellow plastic top off the can, taking a swig of chocolate syrup, then a big gulp of milk, swish it in your mouth and swallow.

Naxet, I read that book several times when I was a kid and ALWAYS! wondered what an egg cream was! She was addicted!

Back to subject: when my kids were little I brought Ovaltine home and they hated it. I could go for either Nestles or Ovaltine but majority rules in my house. Personally I prefer the hershey's syrup in the can, or now in the squeeze bottle. It mixes better; doesn't leave that nasty pile of sugar on the bottom of the glass.

My youngest (high-functioning autistic) can get into a groove where he LOVES the Nestle's Strawberry. He was sent to a juvenile facility when he was about 14 (for something soooo stupid!) and we were allowed to visit 5 times a week. We could bring a snack, but purchased, not homemade. He requested a bottle of Nestle's Strawberry Milk everytime.

wabbitslayer,
hey don't worry. I have a friend who although she probably wouldn't say is addicted to it, absolutely LOVES it!!! Every morning in high school when I'd go pick her up (circa 1994) she'd have a big plastic tumbler filled with chocolate milk. she has 3 other sisters and once she said that they were so low on Quick that her father just threw in the few ounces of powder into the gallon jug of milk, shook it, and served all of them that way! Oh, and her prized possesion is a bright yellow Nestle Quick Tshirt...so there you go!

Hey neesie, you're right about that leftover sugar in the bottom of the glass. I noticed Ovaltine doesn't do that. But when I was an avid Quick drinker I LOVED (might be gross) to get my last bit of toast and slop up all of the leftover goodness in the bottom of the glass! That was always an afterschool snack for me, chocolate milk and two slices of toast.

When I was a kid living in Brooklyn a million years ago, I had my mother buy, Horlicks (brand)
chocolate malted powder. I put in on EVERYTHING! Even ate it straight out of the jar.
They (Horlicks) are probably long gone but, you can still find Carnation (brand) malted powder.

An overdose of Nesquik when it and I were young caused me to be pronounced as allergic to chocolate, so I grew up deprived of chocolate but developed an intense attraction to spiced jelly beans and peanut butter & molasses taffy kisses. Before the OD I enjoyed the malt version of Ovaltine. Now I prefer Hershey's malted chocolate syrup when I can find it and Carnation chocolate malted milk powder when I can't. I can buy my Ovaltine at "The Christmas Story" house in Cleveland because it's only a few miles from my house. If you visit it, be sure to check out Sokolowski's.
