Ketchup on a hot dog - Wed, 03/28/07 6:54 PM
Why is there such a controversy with this subject. I never had ketchup on a hot dog before last weekend. I went to a local place and they made me a vienna beef dog with yellow mustard, raw onions, relish, and ketchup. I tell you what, it was damn good.

I also had a "Chicago" style dog, all the way, with melted cheeze wiz on top and that was damn good also.

At home I always eat my hot dogs with ketchup. The ketchup's homemade, though. I don't eat hot dogs out that much, although I was in New York last weekend and had a couple dogs and a papaya drink at Gray's Papaya because it was late and I was starving. Good dogs, AWFUL buns, and an entertaining stoned person. I love New York.

If you use "search," you'll discover that "ketchup" and "Chicago style dogs" have been extensively discussed and reviewed. Start with "Ketchup on a hot dog, why not?" Visit http://www.superdawg.com/faqs_content.cfm?hasflash=1 Go to: Why is ketchup not included on a Superdawg with everything. Maurie Berman, co-owner of Superdawg, a famous Chicago hot dog stand that opened in 1947, will give the answer you seek.

You'll find that many people under 35 like ketchup on their hot dogs. Just as many people under 35 have difficulty watching black and white movies. Call it changing tastes and the Pageant of Time.

In my limited experience, if a hot dog "needs" ketchup, it is an inferior hot dog to begin with. I used to put ketchup on hot dogs, when we'd buy the standard fare- B*llp*rk, etc, and it was very rare that I'd eat hot dogs then. Since discovering much better dogs, such as Five Star and Usinger's (Thanks to this forum) I've never used ketchup, and have never missed it! So- it's either a matter of taste, or a matter of the quality of the dog to begin with.

I'm 37 and I wont eat a Hot Dog without Ketchup. That goes with Kielbasa ,most sausages, and lunch meat too.

Guess I like Ketchup.

I love ketchup on my hotdogs. Mustard has too much twang for me. Though most call me a heathen cause I like mayo on mine as well :-)

Fact is more people have ketchup on a dog, then those that don't.. I rarely use it myself, but have no problem if there's a thin strip thrown on it. Nothing more then a pureed tomato with a few spices tossed in.

Fancy condiments aren't always required. The best hot dog I can ever recall eating was on a hayride as a teen. It was a plain blackened hot dog on white bread with a streak of ketchup on it. This incredible gourmet's delight was handed me by a certain Preacher's daughter I was head over heels in love with at the time.

In the end we are purists. Pure to our own tastes. Do I put ketchup on a hotdog? Sure but I also eat them with relish, onions and chili. Come to think of it isn't chili a derivitive of a tomato, pretty much where ketchup comes from.

I also eat corned beef and cabbage, sometimes with vinegar and sometimes with butter on the vegetables. I eat french fries sometimes with ketchup and sometimes with malt vinegar. Pork chop sandwiches sometimes with mayo and fried onions and sometimes with mustard.

You get the idea. There is one rule that I will never, ever break: Pastrami and corned beef sandwichs must be served with mustard. That's just me.

I've gotta agree with Uncle Vic...my customers use more ketchup than any other condiment. Except maybe cheese...or jalepenos, and maybe grilled onions, and of course the cream cheese. But aside from that, and well, the spicy mustard, I go through a lot of ketchup. Thank god this is America and we can eat our dogs any damn way we please.

I've never had ketchup on anything, hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, etc. It's my kryptonite. However, my kids love it, supplementing the 35 and under theory.

I sell Vienna Beef hot dogs & Polish for a living. My customers dress their own hot dogs. I supply all the original Chipico (Vienna Beef) condiments, including mustard and ketchup. Once they pay, it's theirs to dress. In my business, ketchup is preferred over mustard by 2 to 1. I'm a traditional Chicago baby boomer, where mustard rules. I've never had ketchup on a hot dog, however, if you buy a dog from me, use as much of what ever you want to dress it.

I'm 22, and it's only mustard for me. I used to like only ketchup as a kid, but I also thought Ballpark and Oscar Meyer made good hot dogs back then too.

It's one of those things like beans or tomatoes in chili. No one really cares what the answer is; the only thing that's important is that it's fun to argue about.

There is a famous, well at least in Lewistown, Pa. they are famous, hotdog shop called Laskaris's. Haven't been there in years, but I know they are still there. Not sure about the brand of dog used, but the buns are steamed, the dogs grilled on a grill that's been there for well over 50 years, they come with mustard, meat sauce, and raw onion.

These are the only dogs I put a bit of ketchup on, it just tastes good with the mustard, sauce and onions.

Other then that I never use ketchup on a hotdog, but I don't see a problem with using it.

My boss is headed over to Char-Grill now to pick up lunch. I ordered to hot dogs, chilli, onions, mustard, and KETCHUP!

Waiting for him to return to wash it all down with a nice ice cold Dr. Pepper.

Hello All,
The diversity of opinions are wonderful!!
I prefer my dogs plain, though at times like kraut on them.
And like DLnWPBrown, I love a cold Dr. Pepper to meld with
the flavour of the bun and dog.
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

Mustard on Hotdogs
Ketchup on burgers

That's the rules.

(And it's ketchup, not catsup.)

That ought to stir the pot up.

Hello all ,

My wife loves ketchup on her dogs , while I cannot stand it on anything except hamburgers occasionaly and fries.

My preference though is a nice chili dog with a bit of a kick .
Have added coleslaw a few times at Coney Island Rest. in Middletown NY at our dog meets and never get funny looks from the gang.

My family enjoys the cheap dawgs, (strange people they are), so I have to doctor a dawg with CATSUP, mustard.

When I splurge and buy the good stuff, I dress them with onions, relish, cheese, a spicy mustard or a good stone ground.

My Grandfather while he was alive would raid the fridge every night before bed time and eat 2 hot dawgs straight from the fridge, no nothing on them cold from the pack. I still find myself doing that on occaision, reaching into the fridge and pulling out a cold dawg to nibble on.

My dad used to do that (Along with the Vienna Sausages), as well as did I, until I got a little older, and realized that they- both the cheap hot dogs and Vienna Sausages- tasted awful. It's the same thing as the snack my grandpa used to make that I loved as a kid- graham crackers with bananas and Colby cheese. I'd eat them like there was no tomorrow. Recently, I remembered them and excitedly recalled the snack to my wife, who promptly said- Yuck, that sounds gross! After trying them as an adult, unfortunately, I have to agree with her-YUCK! It's amazing what we thought was good as kids!

I never heard of putting cream cheese on a hot dog. Do you use the whipped type or firmer type? Is it usually just cream cheese and the dog or do you put more things on it?

I know what you mean. My wife and I were shopping the other day, and came across Vienna sausages. I almost bought some, for the nostagia alone. I'm sure they'd be better than the canned sardines I used to eat with my dad! That ended when I asked for a can at the store, brought them home, and didn't like them. Dad made me sit at the table until I finished them. Never again!!

I guess, for me, it depends on what type of hot dog I eat as to what I put on it.If its a cheap hot dog I usually put ketchup and mustard on it.But a good Vienna or Hebrew National doesnt ever get ketchup. But lots of mustard, sport peppers, onions, etc. And I love sardines on saltines!!!

anybody else put chili sauce, i think bennets brand ,is best on their hot dogs? That and dejon , spicy brown or horseradish mustard.

Bennets at one time was made in baltimore. It's worth the 60-cents more a glass bottle than store brand.

i make-up my hot dogs this way all the time.

I was allowed to eat saltines with that can of sardines, but it still didn't help. I think I went through half of the box of saltines, if not more, before I managed to choke down the sardines!

My mother was the same way...She didn't like sardines, anchovies,or caviar. She did, however, love mullet roe. But,I think that was because the mullet roe didn't have a stong flavor like the sardines, anchovies,or the caviar.Daddy and I made up for Mama's dislike of sardines by eating a ton of them!

ooh, I love sardines too. My dad used to chop up some lettuce and tomato and cut up the sardines all nice and neat for me and I'd eat it with crackers. I miss my dad doing stuff like that for me. As for ketchup/catsup I see absolutely nothing wrong with putting it on anything, but I'm also a mayo-on-hotdog kind of gal, too. In a news article i read sometime last year they were talking about the do's and don'ts of etiquette regarding barbecues and one said: Do not put ketchup on a hot dog unless you're under 12. Whatever!!! I can't stand articles like that or the Miss Manners advice column!

My wife and I went into Wendy's once. She ordered a single, ketchup only. I ordered a single, everything but ketchup. The girl that waited on us said "Y'all are married, ain't ya?"

The best hotdogs come from Roast Grill in downtown raleigh. Note that they do not have ketchup available. The recommended drink is a coke in a glass bottle.

That's the rules.

(And it's ketchup, not catsup.)

That ought to stir the pot up.

Nope, thats right on target on all counts.

Hot Dogs - mustard, onions, chili, cheese (NO cheez whiz either, real shredded cheese of the chedar or colby varities only)

Banished from dogs:

ketchup
kraut - oh awful stuff

I sometimes put ketchup on a hot dog.... then sprinkle it with curry powder. I learned that when I was in Belgium many years ago. Their ketchup had a stronger flavor than any I've seen in the states. And mayo on frites was the bomb.

KETCHUP IS LACED WITH SUGAR, THAT'S WHY KIDS LOVE IT. THE ADULT PALATE PREFERS A MORE REFINED TASTE.
HAVING SAID THAT, I CAN PUT KETCHUP AND MUSTARD ON MY DOGS OCCASIONALLY.

I would've never guessed that so many people felt strongly about ketchup/no ketchup on their dawg. Personally, I've used ketchup since way back when, but I also admit that I've grown more fond of mustard with each passing year - so there could be something to the Under 35/Over 35 argument. Then again, I've been known to put bbq sauce on my dawg sometimes, so...

It isn't always an age thing, because I am under 35 and don't like anything on my hot dog, except once I had fries on the dog. Although, once when watching a show on hot dogs on the travel channel, the people who owned the hot dog places that the guy visited kept telling him that it was against the rules to use ketchup unless under 17.

Personally, I do not care what anyone puts on their hot dog...........just do not bother passing the Ketchup to me.........I do not use it.
