I spent some time at the Hotdog Safari on June 3rd. This is a charity event to raise money for The Joey Fund to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Reports stated over 40,000 people attended the event and over $250,000 was raised to find a cure.
There were over 15 vendors supplying all you can eat dogs, brats and sausages. I highlighted a few of them, as I skipped the mundane dogs and concentrated on what I thought would be the best of show.
Boston Hot Dog Co. out of Salem MA were my favorite. Served a Kayem N/C grilled dog and offered toppings like, bacon, cheese, slaw, mustard, relish, onion.
Maple Leaf Provisions had a N/C dog, great flavor, good snap.
Old Neighbohood had a skinless 8/1 a good dog, but I prefer the N/C.
Gridiron Grillers (Patriots) is made by Klement's of WI. Very salty, skinless not one of my favorites.
Pearl Kountry Klub had a 8/1 N/C, really good dog, but what I got wasn't hot. They had been sitting a while and lost the snap.
Simco's a local place served a N/C dog, not sure what brand and the people handing them out couldn't provide any info. I liked this dog.
Kelly's roast beef served a skinless Kayem dog in a toasted N.E. style roll, the best of the skinless franks I had.
Fuddruckers had a skinless 8/1 dog, served in their home baked roll. Lots of bread, not much flavor to the dog.
There were two different Brat vendors. Kayem, which were very tasty, juicy and served hot off the grill. And Johnsonville who had a big rig with a 53' grill, the brats were not as moist, and served almost cold.
The Sausage Guy, a local legend outside Fenway Park was there. Served his Italian Sausage w/ pappers and onions, real tasty and the guy is quite a character.
I should mention all of these were served without condiments (except for the Boston Hot Dog Co.) you had to fight the crowd to get at bottles of mustard, ketchup (yeah, there were lots of little kids there) and relish. It was a good time, bet a few horse races (lost) and the weather was pretty nice up until 2pm when the rains came.
