-
Wed, 05/30/07 8:51 PM
I am flying into Raleigh next week, but will be visiting Greensboro and my cousin wants me to experience Stameys. I love the vinegar based bbq in Raleigh, and love some of our northern favorites(Speen Queen in Milw. Wi.)Opinions?? Suggestions??

I went to Carter Brothers with my wife Saturday up in High Point and had some really good Q. There sauce is a cross between Lexington & Eastern styles..... but with a hitch, you add the sauce to the Q. Give it a try..... I can give directions if you wish. BTW, I'll try and post some pics of said lunch soon. Dennis in Cary

I agree that Stamey's is the best in Greensboro. Even Wayne "Honey" Monk of Lexington # 1 fame got his start working at Stamey's. I personally think that Monk has kicked it up a couple of notches and has taken Lexington # 1 past Stamey's to become tops in the state (or any other state for that matter).

Stameys is the best in Greensboro, however I would recommend the tenderloin biscuit at Country Barbecue on Wendover for breakfast. In Lexington, Lexington Barbecue is far and away the best.

On my one visit to Stamey's, I thought it was very good. But, I certainly wouldn't put it in the class of Lexington #1. That place is a cut above!

Stamey's is the best available barbecue in Greensboro. Not coincidentally, they're the lone remaining spot that cooks real barbecue over wood coals. Gone are some great and not-so-great log burners. Casey's (early '60's), King's (great FL style ribs), Turner's, Lambert's, Bob Petty's Oakwood Drive-In and a probably a few others that are lost in the pit smoke of my mind.

I grew up in Greensboro, so I may be a bit biased, but I have to agree that Stamey's is the best 'que in Greensboro. The fruit cobblers for dessert are wonderful as well. I have to make a visit every time I'm in town. Jim is right, Stamey's is the last in Greensboro to cook over wood, Country BBQ is acceptable, but they cook over gas and it's just not the same. Enjoy you trip and please let us know what you think of the barbecue.

I would agree that they are the best in Greensboro. I just happened to eat there last evening. I had the chopped pork and chicken combo with cole slaw and hushpuppies. The cole slaw was typical NC and was very good for that type of cole slaw. The fries were hot and crispie, the chopped pork was average and the chicken was dry. The hushpuppies are strange to me as the are loong and appear like a pepper. They do not add a lot to them. I could taste no onions or other spices. I have been there before and the last time was better. Perhaps it was because they were busy? Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Stamey's chops their barbecue with a machine so it is a little finer than I like. My preference is sliced with a bit of outside meat. Paul, you're right about the chicken. It's rarely moist. The hushpuppies are quite plain with very little, if any sugar and onion. However, straight out of the fryer, they're incredible-hot, crispy nuggets of corn goodness.
