Ice cream sodas these days?

I'm thinking the last time I've seen an ice cream soda anywhere, and it seems like years. Mix-in scoops, yes, cones, super cones and super duper cones, yes. But sodas? (Or do I just not hang out uin the right place?) Are they passe?

NYNM, the last time I think I had something like an ice cream soda was when I
was 5 or 6 years old, (am 52 now). And it was something we did at home.
A scoop or two of vanilla ice cream and then pour hot Dr. Pepper into it.
I can still remember the taste. Thank you stirring my memory.

Sonic Drive-In is currently promoting their Root Beer Float on TV ads. I think it is being sold for a buck. I bet you could ask for a substitution for with cola or orange soda.

Culver's a local (now regional) custard chain has great sodas. I get a chocolate (vanilla with chocolate syrup) soda about once a week. Yummy.

Oh man, you done hit a nerve. I looooooooove ice cream sodas. Goes back to the days when you took a girl to the drug store and sat at the marble counter with one soda and two straws---looking into her eyes and sharing---oh well, those days are gone forever.

A few months ago we (the lovely Mary Ann and I) left the Van Wetzel in Sarasota after seeing and hearing Michael Feinstein knock 'em dead. As we headed north she said "I am dying for an ice cream soda"--------"me too" said I and almost immediately turned into a Friendly's which just happened to be on the way.

I used to love the way Howard Johnson would put that big scoop on the rim of the glass---looked great. I'll have a black and white if you don't mind----Chocolate soda with vanilla ice cream and a shot of whipped cream on top of that. "Tastes Good, More Filling". Next time I'll have a hot fudge sundae with wet walnuts !!!!!

Yes, I remember the Scoop on the Side style. Great dripping!!

We had an A&W root beer stand in our local mall for years. A few months ago they advertised Root Beer floats for 99 cents and so my daughter and I each bought one. They were great! The following week, the place had closed down. I think they were just trying to sell out what they had left.

If you happen to be passing through Le Mars, Iowa, stop at the Well's Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor. You can get any concoction known to man that involves ice cream there.

I don't think so, because a soda is, if I'm correct, just soda water with no flavor except that which you add, like a shot of chocolate syrup or vanilla or the juice from a jar of cherries. A float is made with flavored sodas or pops.

Growing up in Connecticut, a float was a milk shake to which a scoop if ice cream was added after it came off the mixer. (By the way, a milk shake was made with just milk and syrup.) An ice cream soda was either a chocolate, vanilla or strawberry soda -- made with syrup, milk and carbonated water, to which one or two scoops of ice cream were added, and it was then topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

If I'm remembering correctly a malt was a milkshake with syrup,milk and a couple of spoons of malted powder.I wonder if that malt powder is still available? This could be something good to try again but with a little lower fat milk without losing all its great original taste.My list of things to try is growing longer each week.Our early food memories were always the best without any restrictions whatsoever.

There are many regional variations of such creations, and the DIFFER greatly as to what part of the country you are in.

Here in Cincinnati, a Milk shake is scoops of ice cream combined with milk and syrup then blended together.

Where as when I lived in Boston, a Milk shake was a glass of milk with syrup added and then shaken. (like M Hoffman mentioned above)

Here is Cincinnati a soda is a soft drink (coke or pepsi)

A float is made of a scoop of ice cream and your fav soft drink poured over it
Brown Cow = Root Beer Float
Pink Cow = Barq's Red Creme Soda over ice cream

a malt/malted is a milkshake with added malt powder.

I remember wonderful chocolate ice cream sodas with peppermint stick ice cream at Howard Johnsons. Back in the 60s we stopped for them on 95 headed South. Delicious!

Ice cream floats still alive and well in the Philadelphia area. Also WIldwood, NJ boardwalk.

A few years ago I learned to make a chocolate soda at a party.

2 tablespoons cream in the bottom of a glass
add as much chocolate syrup as you want and mix
add two scoops vanilla ice cream
fill with carbonated (soda) water

Great stuff but make sure the soda water is fresh!

When I was a kid visiting my grandparents in Elmira, NY, there was a ice cream place called Lovell's that made a "Lucky Monday".

It came in a special glass that Lovell's had made for them, sort of a big milk shake glass that flared out at the top into a sundae bowl. They would fill the glass with your favorite pop, then make a sundae in the bowl with hand scooped ice cream, syrup, whipped cream, etc. - as you ate the sundae, the ice cream and syrup wfell down into the pop, so that when you had finished your sundae, you had an ice cream soda.

I had a delicious chocolate soda yesterday at Krisch's Ice Cream Parlor in Massapequa, Long Island. Krisch's has sublimely creamy homemade ice cream.
