In the last year or so I've started seeing something called Basa in grocery stores down here. I looked it up and found out it was Vietnamese catfish. I think I'll stay away from it too.

Great!

I stopped buying scallops identified as being from China some years ago, and look more carefully at what I do buy, since having some which smelled distinctly of something like trisodium phosphate (wall cleaner) and imparted a foul, astringent taste to my whole dish.

I wish that they elaborated as to what constituted "filth" in that article. Then again maybe I don't want to know.

I /We have been fighting this battle for many years. You are correct about Basa being a catfish. Unfortunately for many folks it is sold as everything from flounder to grouper in restaurants. Most states do not have truth in menu laws, thus no law is broken when this happens. The problem is very deep in the seafood industry, and it ranges from canned crabmeat to swordfish. I could fill 100 pages with the things I know happen on a daily basis. I am a commercial fisherman / wholesaler and I am involved in the Sustainable seafood Initiative. I am also friends with over 50 executive Chefs from Wilmington NC to Savannah Ga. I found your website last night while researching a lobster stew recipe, and I am sure I can provide quality information to anyone coming to coastal SC.

We are thankful here in AK that we don't have to buy our fish, we catch the fish and eat them straight up, usually grilled. As for Chinese fish, I have to pass on that one. Our scallops, crab, shrimp and fish are fresh out of the cold Alaskan waters.

China cares not a wit what goes down the throats of it's own citizens.
I think they care even less what goes down ours.
