Anybody else out there think The Rootbeer Stand sucks? bad meat; bad buns; bad chili; and too much cheese? and the ballyhooed cod sandwich is limp in the water. Yet there's a crowd.. or wasyesterday... even the rootbeer was too sweet!

Last time I was there (about 3 years ago) the Root Beer was ice cold, creamy and delicious. The food was fine, but not spectacular, but the appeal of the place is the Root Beer, not the food.

Pigiron has it right....the food is unspectacular, the rootbeer is divine

Similar story a bit north at Jollys Driveinn in Fairfield and Hamilton

Rootbeer was excellent on my trip, and the chili cheese dogs are quite acceptable but not worth an out-of-the-way trip.

For something different or out for a cruise ,it's not a bad stop for a snack IMHO.

Unfortunately, the Fairfield location of Jolly's has closed. It is slated to be demolished and replaced by a (gack) Taco Bell. The 2 Hamilton locations of Jolly's are still alive and well.

There's already a taco bell not more than 100 yards away!

T.J.:
According to the Hamilton-Journal News, the plans call for a larger, "state of the art", Taco Bell store to be built on the site of Jolly's, with the existing Taco Bell to be razed shortly after the opening of the new location.

I have only been to the Root Beer Stand once, but I liked it. I got the Timmy Dog which was loaded with just about every condiment imaginable. I can definitely see franklee's criticism about too much cheese, though. Of course, the root beer was delicious and the building itself has its own rustic charm.

Jolly's Root beer puts the Root Beer Stand's to shame - and I agree you should not go to either joint for food.

Since this thread has been dormant for almost 4-1/2 years, have opinions of The Root Beer Stand changed at all?  I'm headed to Ohio next week and am thinking of taking US-42 from Cincinnati to Lebanon, and TRBS would be an easy stop.

Just stopped in less than a month ago with my nephews.  The highlight is definitely the root beer, which is terrific.  The food isn't great, but it isn't terrible, either.  Yeah, they give you too much cheese, but that is easily remedied by shaking some of it off.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Where I live this is considered an impossibility...
Thanks for the replies.  If I'm able to stop (I'm hearing that 42 is a mess from 275 to Tylersville Rd. and should be avoided if possible) I might only have room for a root beer, anyway...I'm hoping that pork tenderloin, barbecue, and fried chicken in southeastern Indiana will be enough to tide me over 'til dinner.

I'm told that Cincinnatians consumer more cheese per capita than any other city. If you've ever had Cinci chili, you'll know why.
