I may be mistaken, but a smashed potato is baked, then smashed, and a mashed potato is boiled, then mashed. I can't taste any difference

Isn't that the truth? The ONLY bad shepherd's pie I ever had was from Kentucky Fried Chicken (surprise, surprise!) because they used their instant mashed sorta~but~not~really potatoes. I've had good instant mashed potatoes, but it's not that hard to mash real potatoes, so I never make them. Assuming I'm right about smashed, I've never made them, but can't tell the difference between them and mashed anyway.
