I have never posted a photo before so here is a try, this summer the Chicago area was blessed with the 17year cicadas. They were everwhere!

Kland, You did just fine. I am glad you posted.

I am working with another roadfooder...he has uploaded just fine, but is having trouble with the cut and paste part. More to follow.

Anyone else who wants to practice, please do. If you need help..just ask. Unfortuneately I have forgotten how to transfer photos from off-site web addresses...but I can help with the roadfood.com upload-photos and posting part !

Gene has a unique situation. He can upload to the roadfood photo page, but he can't find an edit button for 'copy and paste'. I was helping him do a "copy the address of the photo" from the photo upload page here on roadfood...and then manually type it in on his post. He got the thing done right here... now is trying to do one on Shellys sign post in the news section. More work than it should be but whatever he is using (Yahoo I think) doesn't have an edit button in view.

I used photbucket.com and it was really pretty easy. I didn't notice the sizing the picture part until after I posted the cicada photo.

    Ed,
When I first got onto roadfood Bushie let me post to his photo album...then xfer over to roadfood. I have no clue how I did that. If you go to the insider forum and look at the thread about shellys pix uploads... Several members have talked about using the off-site album sites and seem to have the transfer down pretty well.

    Kland,
When you have time try posting that same photo in a smaller size and let's see how much detail you lose.

I guess I have to work on this. I went to edit and resized but when I go to tag it to send I guess it's going back to original size. I promise to try again later with a new picture, no more bugs!

Them bugs are pretty cool! We have a cardinal in the backyard that snabs one every few days.. Flys around showing off it's catch, while the cycadia is trying to put out it's one last mating call.
Klands, the size your posting here is perfect! Not too big and not too small. (640 x 480 pic).

We don't have to travel far to see nature. Right in our neighborhood is Lake Minnetonka. We kayaked out to Big Island on Lake Minnetonka Thursday morning where there is an American Bald Eagle nest. To our delight we found the eagle and the baby eagle. The mother would fly out to hunt food and the baby will stay in a tree not at the nest but near the nest and wait. When the mother comes back the baby would fly back to the nest for food. The first picture is of Nancy (my wife) kayaking right below the baby eagle. Look straight up from Nancy's head and you will see the eagle on the perch. The second photo is the mother near the nest. I took this photo with my old point and shoot Olympus Stylus 500 5 megapixel camera with digital zoom turned on while sitting in a kayak. I can't wait to try this again with my new Canon SD850 IS 8 megapixel camera that has image stability built in.

Since this is a test thread I want to see if I reference a picture from Photobucket.com and then later change it's size to see if it changes here and/or still shows up. So here are Lake Minnetonka sailboats at 600 x 450.

Aha! The photo is now 320 x 240. I changed it in Photobucket.com using their Edit feature to change the size of the photo. Lesson learned. If you upload a photo that turns out to be too large you can go back and reduce the size of it to fit better.

Imageshack recently changed their format, and now the pic upload page opens in a second window. If your pop up blocker won'y allow window to open, no picture! Could this be your problem? Just a shot.

Shheech, Harriet, You really had to go back in time for the baby picture, Huh??

I got a note from the local NBC TV News department today. I had sent some of my hummingbird photos like the two at the top of this thread. The head weather guy will be using some of the hummingbird shots in his weather broadcasts the week after next. (State fair is this week so they are live at the fair). Anyway he will notify me of when my photos will be aired. Louisville folks need to watch WAVE-3 to catch the pictures when they air.

Finally a reminder. This thread is for the practice of loading photos. Some will come and go as the poster wishes. Since I labeled this a temporary thread it will be deleted next week sometime. Get your shots posted now...and don't be disappointed when they go later.

Al, I don't think my camera could catch hummingbirds like that. There is a setup selection called "Kids and Pets" supposedly to capture fast moving kids and pets but I doubt hummingbirds. Point and shoot digital cameras are getting faster. One of the major problems with them is the slight time delay making it impossible to get a good picture of a two year old.

Davydd... I have a Cannon Powershot (7.1 mega pixel)... Has the same thing on settings, Kids and Pets.. I find the camera a bit too slow for them action shots of wildlife.. Below the squirell on the right was several feet back, but standing up big time... By time I took the shot, he was enroute to attack his buddy..

Then it lacks on optical zoom (only 4x), and digital zoom bites... I defiantly want to go SLR when the funds permit.. Though I'm not cutting down the Cannon too much, great for point and shoot stuff, but when you want some moving nature shots, it just dont cut it too well..

Here's a pic, using full optical and digital zoom.. (Digital adds to the fuzz).

We've had a steady pouring rain today so haven't had a chance to test the new camera out as much as I would like. I bought the Canon Digital Elph so I could carry it in my pocket and get those breaded pork tenderloin shots. It is not much bigger than a cell phone. I do think though if you want to do some serious birding, animal or travel photos you need a digital SLR.

I hate to say it, but I'm glad to see cicadas in Chicago, instead of Cincinnati.

Cicada are obnoxious, but they only are obnoxious ONCE EVERY 17 YEARS!!

Nothing to do with this topic. I hate cicadas.

    Uncle Vic,

On a Canon Powershot you can "stage" the "trigger". Press it down until the first detent, hold it there until ready to take the pic, next press will click immediately. It's not as good as a one step but better than nothing.

RE: TEST THREAD- for Photo Upload practice-Temporary 2007/08/19 08:47:31 (permalink)
Thats one of the reasons I jumped to the digital SLR...Zero hesitation when you click the shutter to when it fires off. The Digital SLR operates almost identically to a 35 mm of the same type. Also, the autofocus seems a bit sharper than my manual(eyes) can focus these days. The advantages...and it has taken me awhile to learn what a blessing they are, No hesitation which means what you see thru the lens is what you capture on the photo-image. This Canon also will fire "full-auto for 24 shots" which means when you have Grandkids in action or the flock of Hummingbirds at the feeder, you shoot 5 or 6 exposures when you have a good grouping and you are bound to have at least one or two that get what you want. With a flash it will do two or three the same way...which for me is good if the dogs are moving in the house. Shutter Speed is adjustable to 2000th of a second. The hummers were shot at 600th and I didn't quite catch their wings, but it was fast enough to display them in a flight mode. To get 25 useable Hummer shots I practiced a little 'overkill' and shot about 170 photos. I then edited them to come up with the ones worth saving. Total cost of developing and processing = nil. I clean the CF card off and start over! I don't print many of my photos. I save them at the 8"x10" size (about 400-500kb) for sharing on the internet. Now and then I will print one out...or email it to WalMart and let their one-hour do it for me. An 8x10 print from them is less than $3.00. we usually only have the 4x6 prints at 19 cents each, to send to relatives who don't have email.

My current photos are mostly shots of my garden but this is a sand sculpture that was done professionally for our town's art fair last week. Despite very heavy rains this week, it's still standing intact. I'm still trying to work on sizing.
