TFShaw; Dearfolk,
Irony of ironies... Moxie is manufactured by Monarch Beverage, which is headquartered in near-to-me Doraville, Georgia. Try as I might, though, I cannot find it anywhere in these Georgian parts. My first taste of it was on my sole trip to Connecticut: I lucked upon it in a large supermarket in Waterbury (they also carried Eclipse Coffee Syrup!), and it was LOVE at first swig.
My supposition is that it's just expensive enough to make that Monarch purposely keeps its market limited to Maine and wherever it will sell in that proximity. There is, for example, a beer and soda distributor in Pennsylvania that keeps it in stock at all times. If I recollect right, they're somewhere up by The Poconos.
Hmmm... I just read that Moxie has been sold by Monarch to Cornucopia Beverages, which is a subsidiary of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Northern New England. Apparently they are interested in expanding the territory of the drink.
Sodamania in Tampa, Florida keeps Moxie in stock, as do several other mega-soda dealers around the country... Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other cities (WHY not Atlanta?).
Sodamania in Lutz, Florida (north of Tampa: 14603 Livingston Avenue 33549) reports that Moxie is their # 1 seller of all the 400-plus brands they stock. This is located inside Subs-N-Such Sandwich Shop. When I can make it to Florida, I'll have to trundle out there and glom some up.
Some folks would hypothesize that I like Moxie because it's weird, and that factor does indeed enter my mind... but that's definitely not a deciding one. Yes, Moxie gets my vote... Diet Moxie, specifically.

P. S. I have a few cans left in thr 12-pack sitting on the kitchen table... it was brought down from Maine for me.
