Has anyone ever made these themselves?  I've just downloaded a few recipes bc I've never seen any around here.

Yes, I make my own. I'm from northern Michigan and my fiancee is from Vermont. Both of those places are known for their apple cider donuts. The ones we used to get from the places we went as kids no longer stack up to the ones we used to get. I don't know if they have cut back on the amount of cider, or what. I found this recipe, and it's just like what we used to get when we were kids. Just remember to reduce the cider first, or it will have too much liquid. I didn't do that the first time and had to make drop donuts instead of cutting them out of rolled dough (they still tasted good, but were a lot messier to make).

Carter Mountain Orchard near Charlottesville VA has some great ones. There's also a winery up there now too. They are extra good if you are slightly inebriated.

We usually go here: http://www.beakandskiff.com/
Haven't eaten in their cafe, usually go just for donuts and cider, or to taste their hard ciders. Very good.

Near us (Longwood Gardens area of PA), there are several farm stands and orchards. One in particular, Northbrook Orchards, is known for their cider donuts.....sublime and greasy...ask them to second bag them if you got nice car seats! I go out for a dozen....somehow when I get home, there are only 9 or 10 in the bag. I don't know if it is Global Warming.... or Inflation.....or maybe just Loss of Willpower!  They come out so warm and scrumptious......and are still a bit warm when I struggle thru the door and wipe the cinnamon sugar from my lips ( and shirt, and lap, etc).  They WILL stay good for several days.......if they last that long. They also have some great looking sandwiches.  These are not hard "cake" style but somewhat soft (yeast?) autumn treats that can't be missed.

For more authentic "grown here" apples and cider -both pasteurized and "UN" (but UV'd) - along with veggies and gourds and other fall items, Barnards is just a mile down the road on the same side. Pretty countryside to drive.....and Hoods BBQ when they are open makes for a nice outing.

omg, Franklin Cider Mill in Franklin, Michigan makes awesome cider spiced donuts.  You can watch em (and smell em) frying through the window on the back of the mill by the water wheel.  Incredible, expensive, donuts.
