RE: Exit 299, I-80, Eastern Pennsylvania
Krisite, after dozens of fire company, church, and grange chicken and waffles dinners, I can tell you it's not like chicken a la King. Picture an open faced hot turkey sandwich with a waffle instead of bread and chicken instead of turkey, slathered with regular chicken gravy. Most often the chicken is in large chunks instead of slices and combined with the gravy. As brookquarry mentioned, sometimes you get a casserole of chicken and gravy with the waffle on the side. The requisite side dish is pepper cabbage, a sort of ground cabbage and green pepper coleslaw with a vinegar and sugar dressing.
