I vote for Roast Chicken, with mashed potatoes and gravy-----add any vegetable and a bottle of wine and dinner could not be finer (From Maine to Carolina). Is this just my thinking???

I had company today---a total of 5 adults and 34 boys. We had two Purdue Oven Stuffers and they were great. Every one had two plates full and we still have some left for sandwichs.

I was raised on Sunday dinners of pork roast, rice and gravy, blackeyed peas, okra and stewed tomatoes, cornbread and lemon meringue pie.

I'm Canadian...but it's a similar traditional Sunday dinner here. I was raised on prime rib roast with gravy, rolls with butter, potatoes, and seasonal vegetables.

Rigatoni with sunday sauce(meatballs, sausage, neckbones, etc...)some crusty Italian bread maybe some eggplant or chicken cutlets. This was my sunday dinners growing up with the whole family as well as whoever else stopped by!!!!! Great memories.. Great times

I was wondering the same thing -- 40 people fed on two chickens, with leftovers? Those must have been some big chickens!

Or

Chicken and dumplings, also with green beans, rolls.

Or

Pot Roast, with carrots, potatoes, onions, gravy, and rolls.

Apple pie is the best dessert for any of the above….

Let's see now----after cooking and eating and drinking a little vino I guess my brain
and my typing finger weren't in tip top shape---so Frank spells his name Perdue and I
changed it to Purdue. Hmmmmm! Maybe the University spells is wrong.

And as far as the 34 kids goes, it looks like I remembered while typing--- well there
were supposed to be 3 but another showed up----but he didn't eat
much, so I managed. Great Sunday Dinner---loved it !!!!

Lots of other stuff besides chicken is traditional I see--- I thought it was just natural
to take the axe out to the barnyard every Sat. night. Same as taking a bath every Sat nite
---tradition !!!! I must be getting old.

winter months: baked chicken , fried chicken , meatloaf , turkey , ham , the big comfort food with all the fixings.....summer time 95% barbi-Q with the fixings and all the fresh out of the garden grub and the occasional pig or goat roast.....its all about good food and good times....

Much like dannybotz we had rigatoni with sunday sauce.
The meat dish always had meatballs and sausage. Ocasionally there would be chunks of chuck, or a couple 3 ribs, or some steak chunks if they were on sale.
There was a "too hot for the bakery to slice" round of Italian bread.
Salad was lettuce, tomatoes, cukes, sliced onion, and black olives. Summer added more garden veggies. Dressing was garlic powder, salt, pepper, e.v. olive oil and red wine vinegar.
Dessert was homemade apple or pumpkin pie (in the fall, winter). Summer had cantalope and honeydew. Ice cream sandwiches, brick ice cream, or DH chololate cake any time.

I think if we could poll the entire US; the most popular Sunday dinner would be either roast or fried chicken much like yours.

Hello All,
Ancient Mariner, you pretty much describe the Sunday meals I had until I was about 26 yrs. old.
The first wife and I would always visit my parents on Sunday. The second wife...well, I search
the frig for left-overs or make my own.
Fried or roast chicken, mash potatoes, corn, green beans. I miss those meals so much.

Being a family of one, I don't do it up very often. I think I'd lean to the English roast beef and side dishes if the occasion ever did come up.

Our Sunday dinners growing up were roast chicken, mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, Herring Hall spoonbread and frozen mixed veg mixed with a little mayo and garlic powder. I still make this once in a while and when I taste that first bite I close my eyes and think about my mom and dad.

I couldn't find the complete spoonbread recipe for the longest time (my grandfather paid $50 for it in 1957), but of course it turned up on the internet a few years back for free!

Sunday dinner in my neck of the woods consisted of fried chicken, cream gravy, mashed potatoes, peas and biscuits... and of course I can't fry chicken to save my life!

I've got to admit that a Sunday extended family dinner when I was growing up was most likely to be roast beef, with roast potatos if you were lucky.

Folks in the North (and especially my Family) didn't fry chicken. Roast chicken was more likely an immediate family affair, but certainly in the Sunday running as would be corned beef (boiled dinner) or a pork roast.

Sounds kinda like the "loaves and fishes" story... 2 chickens and plenty for all and leftovers to boot!!!... what next???... water into budweiser???...

Strike the peas & biscuits in favor of yeast rolls and green beans, and probably add mustard or turnip greens and you've got my grandmother's menu.

When we had a place in Welfleet, Cape Cod, steamers were a Mom can't bother, Dad and the kids are doing dinner Summer weekday dish. Of course, they had their place in all-day Saturday clambakes with lobster and all the fixings, for company.

Lobster was a special treat, except for that one year that my Dad got them for free. Wednesday or Thursday was lobster night, then.

Sunday dinner: the ultimate would be late summer when fresh veggies are still to be had. Growing up we might have had:
Fried Chicken, fresh green beans cooked with a small ham hock, fresh summer squash sauted with onions and seasonings until crisp-tender(in the south we don't cook ALL veggies to death), homemade creamed corn, fried corn bread, a platter with sliced fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, and if we had dessert, peach cobbler made with a very rich pastry from homegrown fresh peaches. Winter would be pork roast, boiled potatoes dressed with a cream sauce (similar to scalloped), fresh collard greens, and crackling corn bread. Dessert? If we had it (not often), fresh apple cake. Oh gosh! I am so hungry now!

My one grandmother made the exact same dinner every single Sunday until she died - roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, cooked dried lima beans, carrot salad and lemon sponge pie.

It looks like a photo finish----chicken and roast beef coming
down to the wire neck and neck. As kids we too had both but I
gotta admit the leftover roast beef made into Sheppard's Pie
was like another 1st class dinner on Monday. Nothing wrong
with cold chicken breast sandwichs on homemade white bread
with mayo and cranberry sauce though, with a bowl of chicken
soup made from the bones and giblets. Lordy, lordy !!!!!

Mothers that cook sure are special !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, Here is what we always had for Sunday Dinner. You have to remember that I was not raised in the South and that my Grandfather was born in Littleport,Cambridgeshire, England. He lived to be 104 and my Sainted Mother would cook him this meal every Sunday.

Roast Beef and Gravy. (Generally a rolled roast that we obtained from the butcher.)
Mashed Potatoes.
Parsnips, carrots, turnips, any kind of root vegatables. He loved them.
Peas and/or corn.
Yorkshire Pudding. My personal favorite and is today.
Homemade yeast rolls and butter.
Desert: Butter Pecan Ice Cream or Strawberry Shortcake in season.
Coffee and Tea.

Although they are all gone now I still remember those Sunday meals and try to duplicate them as best as I can.

Bakersboy,with the exception of Yorkshire pudding,your English mother's Sunday dinner sounds like my southeast Alabama mother's Sunday dinner...Absolutely delicious ! Mama would have had rutabagas instead of parsnips,though.....
