Tonka Grill & BBQ, Lake Minnetonka - Fri, 01/4/08 8:48 PM

Dinner tonight was at the Tonka Grill & BBQ in Spring Park, MN across the street from Lake Minnetonka on County Rd 15. It is a small place with a parking garage. On arrival the garage was filled with BBQ smoke beckoning us in.

We had the Texas Beef BBQ Ribs half rack with salad, Texas toast and beans for $13.95 that was voted the best in the Twin Cities by Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine.

We also had the Baby Back BBQ Ribs with salad, Texas toast and new garlic mashed potatoes for $12.95.

Both were tasty and not dry. The meat stuck to the bone. The sauce was tangy but not too hot. I think they can compete with anyone. Just for an encore here is the pulled pork sandwich we had last year that BuddyRoadHouse lusted over.

I was saving it up Buddy. Actually until last night I had only been there once for the pulled pork sandwich. This may be the sleeper BBQ place in the Twin Cities. Next summer book either the Lund's Navarre store or the Lund's Wayzata store and you won't be too far away.

Wayzata is a regular stop for us. Don't think we've ever been to Navarre. Is it new?

Not a new store but a new Lund's. It was formerly a SuperValu. It is just two miles north of my house and about a mile east of the Tonka Grill & BBQ. The Wayzata Lund's would be about 8 miles east.

We moved out here 4 years ago and drove by this place everyday without trying it out. I do alot of slow smoking myself, so it is seldom I will pay for someone else to do it for me. Well, we finally stopped in, and I have to say the food was a big surprise. Excellent quality of meat and sides, sweeter sauce, and friendly service. I have not found another bbq joint in MN that serves the Texas Beef Spare Ribs, yummy!! The Pulled Pork sandwich is delicious, and a reason for anyone and everyone to stop there. They have docks too, so just call in advance and they'll walk their bbq right out to your boat, or dock it and go in and sit down. You won't be disappointed.

rapp,

First welcome to Roadfood.com. Baker's Ribs in Eden Prairie might also serve Texas beef spare ribs since they are a Texas BBQ off-shoot. You might want to give them a try also. It is interesting that most foodie fans online no nothing about the Tonka Grill & BBQ. They seem to to get chills crossing the Minneapolis and St. Paul borders. It is their snobbish losses. It is not all Famous Dave's in the suburbs as many of them (not all) seem to think.

BTW, BuddyRoadhouse did get to the Tonka Grill & BBQ this year.

We sure did! Davydd and his lovely wife, Nancy, introduced Dad and myself to the joys of Tonka Grill. It's a very neighborly place serving large portions at reasonable prices.

As Davydd mentions, Baker's Ribs in Eden Prairie is another excellent 'Que destination in the Twin Cities. Either of these fine establishments beats the pants off of anything Famous Dave's has on their menu.

Hey David,

Have your BBQ stops oever taken you to tenderloin-serving BBQ joints?

In theory, you can get a cut of tenderloin warm, tender, and rich with rendered fat by cooking low and slow BBQ-style. Then it can be cut, breaded, and fried to perfection. In practice, crucial steps may be skipped or done too fast. Topping a tenderloin with sauced-up pulled pork is a treat though.

trzhotel,

No, BBQ, good BBQ, is in short supply in our neck of the woods. A pulled pork sandwich is a good fall back when you can't find a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich though. In my blind pursuits in a new restaurant I could end up with pulled pork or a walleye sandwich and be happy. I can be flexible. In my last venture I had a Paul Molitor Jucy Lucy hamburger and let my wife order the tenderloin at Shamrocks in St. Paul for the photo.

Lyon's Pub on 6th in downtown Minneapolis serves a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich with BBQ sauce and cheese. That's their interpretation of what should go on the sandwich.

Haven't signed in for a long time, and had missed this thread when it was posted. My story is almost identical to rapp's, I've driven by this place many times and never stopped in.  This thread is changing that.  Going there tonight for a good BBQ sandwich.  Thanks for the tip.

I agree that in the Twin Cities, people mindlessly flock to Famous Daves when there are such better options.  Baker Ribs in Eden Prairie is well worth the trek.  It is the real thing, and in my opinion the best in the area.
