I thought about this one and came up with several fine meals I could go with; but truly, if I could, I would have my last meal made by my Mom. (She passed away a few years ago). Nothing fancy, just my childhood faves. I would ask for:

Tomato rice soup

Oven fried chicken
Mashed potatoes (made with sour cream)
Polish style beets (hot, grated, more sour cream, bacon, splash of vinegar)
Broccoli drowning in butter

Pineapple apricot cheesecake

I'd give anything to have that again.

Oh, this is really a great question, I am amazed I have not seen it before! This is so funny.

You know, it always surprises me to read about death row dudes requesting Big Macs, and junk like that. There are a couple of realities involved here. A)The "chef" in a prison is not likely to know how to cook up some fancy french dish. Nor is the warden likely to order out much more than fast food. B)Maybe the condemned does not give a damn about his health, right? Just gimme a pizza. Now, to answer your question: and I will bet I get a lot of seconds from Dallas on this:
Last meal: Cost? About $12
a) Double Margarita, on the rocks, at Ojeda's on Maple (of course, I don't think you can pound booze on Death Row, although I sure don't understand that. It's like, why do they wipe your arm with alcohol swabs just before they pump you full of poison?!?! Give the man a drink, dammit!
b) Lots of lovely chips and salsa, all of this is Ojeda's.
c) #5, with a second crisp taco.
d) Big glass of iced tea, lots of lemon & sugar.
e) About 4 steamed corn tortillas, with butter & salsa.
f) Just one more single margarita.
g) A pecan praline.
But I do wonder about some of the "last meals" I read about, almost incredible quantities, I don't see how anyone can park that much, just before taking what they used to call the hot squat.

No no no, this is actually a series--they've been asking this of chefs and foodies for at least a year now at the Village Voice. It's actually kinda great; the chefs get to weigh what other chefs' food and local treats against, basically, their mom's cooking and talk about the importance of food and memory and all that . . I think it's kinda life-affirming, actually.

Its just a question. I think you are reading too much into it. And Hey we are all gonna go sometime why not go out with a full stomach and a smile. I hope they serve good food at my funeral. I think I will write the menu now. Heck I have cooked enough good meals for them. Some people live to eat others eat to live.......Russ ......Lighten up

While it may be life affirming-and I agree that discussing favorite meals are fantastic-I guess I should turn it around from "Prison guard asking me what I want as my last meal" to " What I hope is my last meal before I leave this earth" Thanks for the other point of view, Nancypalooza.

I liked this thread Russ. It really made me think. One time, once chance only.
Mine would be:
Appetizer:
Florida shrimp cocktail with my Aunt Carolines cocktail sauce. She just added lemon and a whopping tablespoon of prepared horseradish to bottled cocktail sauce but man, what a punch!
The 1905 Salad from The Columbia, Tampa.
Meal:
T-Bone from Peter Luger Very rare.
Sides:
Pickled beets from the Valley Diner Derby, CT.
One ear of fresh butter and sugar corn plain.
Small bowl of mom's spaghetti and meatballs.
Bread from the Columbia Tampa and butter from Wisconsin.
Dessert:
Barb Slossar's (ex co workers wife) blueberry cheesecake. After 28 years I still remember how good it tasted.
Drink:
Ernest and Julio's chianti.

Sides
My late Moms baked mac and cheese

Desert
Impossible to say, it would have to be a desert buffet

Say, Jennifer 4 has kind of a tasty sounding soup there, the tomato-cheddar deal. Does la Jenny have a recipe, or am I on my own? I've always liked Campbell's cheese soup, but I think it needs some help, maybe going 1/2 cheese, and 1/2 tomato might be pretty good. I think a little green onion and tabasco might help, too. I've been fixing up Campbell's French Onion soup with toasted chunks of Francisco brand sourdough, and any old brand of swiss cheese. Maybe some fresh ground pepper below the cheese. All in a small souffle dish.

hey, baah ben, I'll share that tableside prepared Caesar Salad with you!
Cause that seems to be a lost art, the making of the salad right in front of you... watching the guy put the woustershire sauce in , a drop of mustard,etc.. hard to find places around that still do it!

I'll go for the pommes frites as well!

Tough decision for the main course, steak, prime rib, Carnegie Deli pastrami, homemade turkey like Mom used to make (RIP)

For dessert, I'll have some real good cupcakes, made just right, not overly sweet..
one chocolate and one vanilla, with lots of good frosting and sprinkles..

I used to work in a bookstore and there is actually a book out about the last meals of death row inmates. I would want my last meal to be my Grandma Beck's Thanksgiving dinner and to be surrounded by my family and those of my family who had passed on who used to share this meal with me for years. A partial list: fresh Plainville turkey, mashed potatoes, mashed butternut squash, homemade cranberry relish, homemade stuffing AND dressing, green bean casserole, homemade bread and rolls, apple pie, pumpkin pie, rhubarb pie, mincemeat pie (for Grandpa Beck), chocolate pudding pie and Boston cream pie (all from the Home Bakery in Rome, NY). And a tub of frozen Cool Whip (someone always forgot it in the freezer and it wouldn't be our Thanksgiving if it was actually thawed out!).

Okay, I'll take a run at this ... I might have to stretch it out ... This might be my last day of eating.

BREAKFAST (first course) ... VEP GREEN (What the heck it's the last day, might as well get it off to a good start) ... Corned beef hash at JOHN O'GROATS in LA (if they were closed, it would have to be Party Hash from THE HASH HOUSE in Vegas). http://www.internetwines.com/rws23800.html

A soft pretzel from THREE GIRLS BAKERY at Pike's Market in Seattle, washed down with a well-crafted root beer.

LUNCH ... LAFAYETTE CONEY (Detroit), WHITE HUT burger (Holyoke, Massachusetts).

SNACK ... Raw scallops from J'S OYSTER in Portland, Maine as an appetizer then a PEPE'S PIZZA.

DINNER ... burger and grilled wings from BRICKYARD in Daytona (if they were closed, it would be a burger at STANICH'S in Portland, Oregon.)

DESSERT ... Another VEP Green.

In case there happened to be a tomorrow, I'll meet you in Memphis ...

My last meal would be comprised of bits and pieces of all of my favorite meals all over the world, so it would take a while, probably at least a few weeks.
App: mussels cooked over a campfire on a specific beach near Palavas, France, and a fresh baguette.
1st course: raw oysters, oyster shooters, and then chargrilled oysters at Acme in New Orleans (last meal, may as well emulate Diamond Jim Brady, right?)
2nd course: My dad's homemade curry. Warm, kind of spicy, soothing comfort food.
3rd course: double cheeseburger and the Champagne of Beers at Workingman's Friend in Indianapolis.
Sides: my mom's corn fritters with molasses, a ripe red tomato sliced and salted, and sauteed broccoli raab with garlic and chili peppers.
Dessert: beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde. And probably some Rolaids!

I like these kinds of topics too.

Appetizer: Maine lobster stew

Salad: I don't order that many of them......I'll take a soup instead and go with lobster bisque

Main Courses: I steamed king crab legs on New Year's Eve and would have to say that is my favorite main course. A second one is tough, but I'll go with brisket.

Three Sides: creamed spinach, white corn fresh off the cob (had some last night while eating out) and mashed sweet potatoes with marshmellow and pecans

Dessert: I'll go with a turtle sundae made with genuine frozen custard.

MAIN COURSES: Ribs from Tom's Place in West Palm Beach (double portion--who needs anything else?)

SIDES: Black-eyed peas and collard greens, both prepared by a good Southern cook, plus an order of drive-in curly fries

Russ, have you eaten there lately? I found it's not the same since the patriarch died a few years ago. When we lived in Clairemont a couple years ago, there was a Roberto's about 2 blocks away. I went in for my favorite carne burrito and watched the "cook" open up a round pan sitting on the grill and take out meat that had been pre-cooked and kept warm in the pan. Naturally it was dry and tasteless. That was my last visit. Maybe they just discovered this short-cut at this store.

Very interesting.

I'd pour an ice cold Heffeweisen with lemon and start with scallop and toro sashimi, salmon egg nigiri, a couple kumamoto oyster shooters.

Pour a Saison (beer) and move on to a fried goat cheese salad with a light basamic vinegrette with a bruschetta on the side.

Move on to a double IPA beer. Grilled black cod crusted with crushed macademia' nuts & coconut. Jasmine rice. A seared sea scallop with lime/chili/cillantro dressing. Grilled asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, butter browned brussle sprouts with pecans and maple syrup.

Now pour a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine. I'd have to have a small rare lamb chop with apple/mint jelly, sided with a rare kobe beef ribeye medallion, and a small duck breast with a simple pan reduction glaze. With a small side of porcini risotto.

Wee cup of strong coffee to cleanse the palate pre-dessert.

Chocolate souffle with a single small scoop of homemade vanilla bean ice cream.

And since I'm going to die, a vertical tasting of a 5-10-20 and 50 year old tawny port from Kopke.

I'd like a wood fire going on, candles with dim lighting, some Gerry Mulligan and Dave Brubeck going on in the background, and my sweetie by my side.

What no Anthony Bourdain? actually I believe he originaly said Roasted bone marrow, then a week or two ago he was in Japan on the travel channel at a sushi rest. and said sea urchin roe and just last week he was on another episode but here in the states and it was back to the marrow so who knows when the episodes were shot.
