RITA'S WATER ICE- - Wed, 01/16/08 5:40 PM
In Philly we call Italian ice (water ice)-Rita's makes great water ice with real fruit(cherries/blueberries/lemon peel-ect)-they also have great custard.

You can not say that. Just because there once were a Mom and Pop place that caught on and became big. That is a great water ice place-one of the best in the area.If you have not tried it that don't knock it.

Ralph's is another chain ,much better, and more like REAL Italian ice. Italian Ice ,like I grew up with in the Italian communities of North Jersey, is hard to find these days

Rita's is ok for what it is. On a hot summer day it'll do the trick...but it isn't Italian ice like most of us remember it...too icy.I don't mind it....I'm not a prist with Ialian ices like I am with real Italian pizza. I don't think of Rita's like I think of(choke) Pizza Hu...oh I just can'y give that red roof any more free advertising...you can fool some of the americans some of the time.......

Rita's water ice-not italian ice-it is advertised as water ice-nothing like Italian ice.

Mike -

I hate to say you're wrong - but you're wrong. I live in Pittsburgh and they are advertised as "Italian Ice". I know in Philly back in the early 90's I remeber seing "Rita's Water Ice", but here they are "Rita's Ice-Custard Happiness" and on their menu they say Italian Ice. And in my humble opinion it IS like authentic italian ice. Italian ice is smooth, not shaved ice or snow cones.

Also, I like Rita's. I think they have a high quality, but are a bit pricey. I also believe their custard is far better than most soft serve ice creams.

I tried their choc custard last year, and I threw it out after a couple of licks.
Absolutely, no taste!

And I agree that Ralphs is better for italian ice.

I've been to a few Rita in NJ and they are all OK. Nothing fantastic or different. I normally get whatever fruit is in season (blueberry, cherry) although I probably agree with "prius" and have not tried the chain mixed into my Ice as of yet (Come on Roadfooders, find the humor and sarcasms in some of these posts). I do not think the chocolate is good, but mixed with the Custard it is OK. It's a summer night desert alternative and still free on the first day of spring.

Just as a reminder, they offer a free treat every year at Spring time.

Rita's is good, people. Try the...shake? I don't know what it is. I get rootbeer ice blended with icecream whenever I go shopping up in Washington, PA.

I was in Allentown, PA yesterday and I stopped at Rita's for the vanilla custard and it was double super.  I have never had anything like it.  I have stopped at Culvers many times and whatever Rita's does in my opinion is much much better.

Great stop for me.  I just found out that they have a site in knoxville and I am going there tonight.
