Try a Carte Blanche. Crown Royal, triple sec, 2 dashes of bitters, twist of orange peel. Stir

LOL! I've had the same thing happen on a few threads...I like Vodka with Cran Rasberry Juice, don't know if it has a name!

Campari and gin is my current favorite.

1.5 oz. gin, 1 oz. Campari, stirred and served over ice.

I really like the Negroni a lot, too, but sometimes I'm just not in the mood for vermouth.

A certain seigneur in Maryland recently introduced me to Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select, a drink so smooth a cue ball could roll 1,000 miles upon it with but a single little touch. And while a bit of this mellow masterpiece in a glass with but a single small ice cube is not a cocktail, it will do for me.

Re spiced rum and ice, I find Cruzan 9 and Kraken really do a nice job, and they don't lower the proof, as so many do. I also add some soda. If Total Wine operates in your area, their house brands are good value. This is generally a summertime drink for me, in that my staple is scotch and soda or a vodka martini, stirred, not shaken. I am aware of recent controversies on forums, but, if one is in Newark, Delaware, one should try the upstairs bar at timothy's, and specify Scott. A superb host and mixologist.

I have changed too. I've been dropping a tiny ice cube in my Bourbon. Learned that at Heaven Hill.

My all time favorite cocktail is caprioska with brown sugar. Sometimes when I feel like giving a slight twist to my mood I do a lot of experiments with my drink.

The problem is finding good Cachaca. It is not widely distributed in my area, so that when my uncle from Brazil was in, I had to hit five or so stores

I thought a caprioska was simply mulled lime wedges, brown sugar and vodka. Maybe you are thinking of a Caipirinha which is made with Cachaca. Anyway, my favorite cocktail is a Sazerac which must be consumed in the French Quarter.

I have most recently discovered the joys of Laphroig Quarter Cask. We were at the Airport Hilton in Bristol and fortunately there was a Scotch tasting in the hotel pub so for 10 pounds we got to sample a variety of single malts. It was really difficult to name a favorite but I managed.

Lately, a large tumbler of Tanqueray (or Bombay) and tonic over ice with a splash of Rose's sweetened lime juice. Very refreshing.

I love a Mojito when dining al fresca on a warm, dry day.

A tumbler of 12 year old Macallan single malt Scotch with a splash of water. No ice.
I wish I could afford the 18 year old (Macallan).

Understood! I'm happy you were able to find it. I've never had occasion to look for it here....hmmm, maybe a project for today. Also, as twinwillow mentioned, I love a good Mojito...Hemingway supposedly downed a few, but I have heard he was partial to Daiquiris.

I have a bottle of the kind with the red shrimp on the label.  I can only drink it mixed.  Are there better ones you can drink straight?

Seems a bit like rum agricole that even though I have (supposed) quality rums, I can only drink them mixed, say a Ti' Punch.

I think the "shrimp one" is Pitu which is cheap and horrible. Look for Leblon for cocktails and Germana for sipping. The one most used in Brazil and I don't think exported is Ypiola in either gold or silver.

Pitu is indeed rough stuff. Have recently been drinking the following
2 oz dark rum
2 oz dry vermouth
1 oz fresh lemon juice
Stirred over ice
Waiting to name it

I used to tend bar and that sounds very close to a Roosevelt cocktail...except you use OJ and a touch of good sugar. Also, shaken and served up. Very good.

For sure...yours sounds less sweet and more refreshing since on the rocks. Good idea...you ever have a Sazerac cocktail?

Yeah, much less Herbsaint. I've actually never had one outside of NOLA. There they simply coat the glass with Herbsaint and pour off the excess. Then it's just Peychoud's (sp) bitters, a touch of simple syrup, rye, ice and stir. Strain into a glass with a lemon twist. I guess long ago they used absinthe...is that now available or at least a "diluted" form?
