Shoofly Pie in Lancaster County - Fri, 02/8/08 4:07 PM

I voted in the current poll for shoofly pie because it's a regional item I never see outside amish country. I've tried so many and it's hard to pick a favorite...but truly, like cheese cake, taste and texture varies so much. Plane and Fancy Farm still makes a pretty good one...and I got a great one from the Bird-In-Hand Farmers market. Any other places to recommend? How far from Lancaster did you roadfooders ever come across a genuine shoofly pie????

Willow Valley Bakery has a good shoo-fly pie. Three are 2-3 stands at the Central Market which have good pies. Also, at Root's and Green Dragon. I've never seen them outside Lancaster Co.

Hey, do the shoofly pie mixes work? I've never had the courage to try one?

The nicest is when you drive on back roads and some farms have just picked veggies on a stand, and a few shoofly pies. Also what's that other one, whoopie pies, that's it!!!

Yes,that is a must every trip....my wife makes me do that! And I don't mind. We're bought fresh corn, peppers, and eggs, and home made root beer..and so much more. A trip to Amish country is a way to restore one's soul. A beautiful piece of the world, and something to enjoy at every turn. It should be the destination of every american...at least once in a crowded lifetime. We return every 2-months!!!

Yes, Amish country MUST be backroads only, no tourist traps. I find the Southern part of Lancaster county esp. good for these farm finds.

I believe the strict Amish still work w/o electricity.

Have you ever stayed overnight at one of those farms? You can find out about them thru I think Lancaster Cnty CofC. We did a few times, its great. The last one arranged for us to have dinner at a neighbor's. They do this with a huge family-style meal, maybe 10 people (maybe $20 per) with huge fresh home cooked meal and a tour of the barn later! Worth it!!

No NYNM,
but we spend several hours a trip sometimes with our Amish friends. They and tgheir 8 kids are great hosts...and we share such great stories. I've learned a lot about their way of life.
