RE: Indio Tamale Festival
HA! Oh, dear, I guess I did not see ann's wink. I was thinking too hard about Hello Kitty. Anyway, I was talking to a guy from Mexico today about this Tamale Fest, and he says he's traveled ALL over Mexico, and there are HUNDREDS of different types. It's funny that the LOS ANGELES (!) TIMES piece mentioned Strawberry Tamales, and this guy Raul just brought that subject up out of the blue! Now, that I want to test out. How about blueberry tamales? Sounds good to me. I really love the green corn tamales in the summer at El Cholo here in LOS ANGELES (!). Those are practically dessert. Raul says you can pretty much put anything in there. I can see that. How about say, a pizza tamale, with chopped salami and mozzarella? Or a nice pesto tamale, with basil (duh), garlic, parmesan, and toasted pine nuts? If you're gonna go as far as strawberry, well, hmm... How about adding Mexican chocolate? Like in moles? Or you could do a ratatouille (sp?) version, with zucchini and everything. I won't even approach Asian additions, I don't know enough about that subject. Oh, the mind reels here. A Soul Food tamale, with black-eyed peas and stuff. Hawaiian tamales. Swedish meatball tamales. And wait... What about adding booze? Champagne tamales. Single malt scotch tamales. Tamales with beer. I'll quit now.
