I'm surprised Tastee Subs in Edison NJ has not been mentioned. This place is legendary. Super bread, great subs, and a well oiled assembly line that get you in and out quickly. It has been considered one of the best in NJ for a long, long time, I wish I knew the history. 20 years ago when I worked in Piscataway I started going there, as it was recommended as one of the best, and I have never been there without a line in all the years. Always busy, always quick. A few newer place are modeled after it called "Just Subs", in fact I recognize a few of the faces from Tastee's. Wher edoes it rate for NJ RoadFooders?

I agree. I may have had one or two better subs elsewhere in NJ (Pasquale's in Hoboken comes to mind), but for reliabilty and consistency, I'd rate Taystee #1. Plus, like you said, the speed of service can't be beat. In fact when we used to take our kids to the shore when they were younger, we'd make a 10 mile detour off the GSP to go to Taystee on the way, and there's probably a million sub places on the Shore.

One place I want to check out is Ye Old Sub Base on the Main Street in Clinton. Several people have told me about it. Nice town to walk around in, too.

Tastee's is right on Plainfield Ave, about 1/2 block off 27. Near the large Sam Ash with a Burger King across he street.

I know that block! When I was in my first or second year at Rutgers, I was taken to a new place that opened up there called Burger King, where I had something called a Whopper.

A tip on driving there. It is very difficult to access Tastee if you turn from Rt 27. You will be on the wrong side of the street and it's impossible to cut across traffic (maybe even illegal, I forget) to get into the parking lot. It's much easier if you approach from Rt 1, which will bring you in on the right side.

to Alesrus: I've been to White House once or twice. It would be hard to compare the two, I'd have to have them side by side. I'll say one thing, Tastee's are about twice the size and much cheaper.

The Burger King parking lot is large and most people on that side of the street park in it and walk over. It is a bit of a pain in the a**

For those who live a little further south, Tastee has another location on Rt. 27 in Franklin Park, NJ.

Hi,

I know a little history about Tastee Sub Shop. It started in the early 60's in the little strip mall next to Burger King and then it moved across the street. We went there for subs and a whole one cost 50 cents. During high school, they would patronize our yearbook and I remember that one of the owners was a fellow by the name of Dave Thornton. Another alumnus of my high school, Carl Padavano, I believe, is part owner of the shop. I have often gone there at lunch time when the line was out the door and wrapped around the building. If you get one of the long time employees like Michele, she will remember your favorites and make it for you. Everytime I come up from Virginia I have to get one for me and some other former Edisonites who live here. I have an old Tee Shirt that they used to sell with their name on it.
