New Jersey is one of the BEST states for finding great Italian food. Italian bread varies so much in quality, even if it is found everywhere in most states. Many places in the Garden state feature hearth baked crusty Italian. Where do YOU find the BEST Italian bread in NJ?

In Newark, there use to be a fantastic brick oven bakery....Their oval shapped crusty bread, I believe it was called Sicilian Bread, was their signature item. I have to believe it's still in business and mentioned in the yellow pages someplace. I use to go to the bakery and pick up a loaf. it would last us a week.

All the good Italian restaurants in NJ need some place to get their table bread and I believe Newark, Paterson and Trenton serve that purpose.

Maybe the bread was made by Seminole Indians.

The best Italian/and or French bread in N.J. is baked by the following bakeries:

1. Nicolo's, Montclair
2. Cuccuzella's, Newark
3. Marie's, Hoboken
4. Calandra's, Newark

I don't remember the name of the bakery in newark, but I do recall it was a small storefont place on the left side of the street as you went down a small hill. That's all I remember. The bread was amazing and it would last for the entire week.

Now that you have your crusty Italian bread, I highly recommend you load it up with slices of Boar's Head bologna, fresh shreeded lettuce and gobs of Hebrew National deli mustard. Grab a bag of wise potato chips, a Dr. Brown black cherry soda and enjoy the best sandwich lunch in town. Oh, I miss the East Coast.

No...No...No....crusty Italian bread needs Italian meat..at least a REAL genoa salami, provolone etc...maybe lettuce, beefsteak tomato, a little extra virgin and balsamic....save the bologna for the white bread...or frying for breakfast!

I am eating my heart out listening to you guys talk about Italian bread in Jersey - I am from Yonkers originally and grew up up on Italian bread and pizza - where I am now - in the boonies of S. OH - the only decent Italian/French baguettes I can get are at Meijers in eastern Cincinnati - they come frozen half baked from Ace Bakery in Toronto and Meijers defrost them and finishes the baking in the early AM and sell them till they run out - generally around noon time. Damn fine crusty chewy bread like I grew up with. I never knew how good I had it with food till I moved from NY.
