Instant Mashed Potatoes - Tue, 03/4/08 10:25 AM

We're all guilty of being in a hurry, sometimes. One of the oldest time savers is instant mashed potatoes. They seem to be getting better lately. Costco just started carrying a new one. Can't remember the name ,but its the one in the light blue packaging.Close to home mashed.
How do you out there feel about using the instant???Any brands yo'd recommend.Always open to suggestions. Also ever had Instant served to you in a restaurant???

I keep a box on hand for late night snacks every now and then, I have NEVER served them to family/friends and I'm QUITE sure I had them when I was in Tampa at the "Pancake House" among others. Seems like buffets are good about this although maybe not as much.

I use them as an ingredient to thicken soups and to coat fish fillets - really tasty and better than bread crumbs.

But when I was a kid it was my go-to afterschool snack - my mother was horrified!

They are ok to keep around to make a small batch for yourself. I keep them around for my kids when they want mash instead of baked.

I subsisted on them when I was a poor college student. Seems like plenty of restaurants serve them. I now prefer the real thing and they're not hard to make and can be made fairly quickly.

we serve them at our church suppers. We use LOTS of butter and half and half. They come out quite tasty if I must say so myself

Yeh, we've found that doctored instant isn't bad at all...maybe the consistancy is a little off...but pretty tasty.

I keep them as an emergency standby. Well, roughly translated, that means " when I am too tired or hurried to make proper mashed potatoes ". So thats about 3 times a year. I use Smash. At least that vaguely tastes like potatoes, unlike the cheaper varieties, even though they've stopped making them in the " dried nugget " configuration and gone over to powder like everyone else.

Sometimes when I am really unwell I will crave Smash mash and tinned spaghetti hoops. The Smash mash has to take up half a bowl with a nugget of butter melting into it and the tinned spaghetti hoops the other.

Yes I have been served instant mash when I've eaten out and I was extremely cross about it. It was only in a pub but I still would expect fresh mashed potatoes.

I keep a box on hand, but never use it for it's intended purpose.
As mentioned above it makes for a great thickener for soups and graveys.
Also, if you over cook your spuds or leave them in a double boiler too long and find that they get runny, use them to tighten up the spuds.
But they can be good for last minute unenvited guests {kids} to strech a meal. Chow Jim

I keep a box in my cabinet for out of potato emergencies like if I forgot to buy a bag or something lol which doesn't happen often but when I'm grocery shopping with an active 3 year old my brain can get a bit scattered ;)

IMHO...I am not a fan of instant mash, but the ones you can get from sams club in the red box..Idahoan I think is the name...It already has dry milk in it so you just add water. If you make them a little thicker than what the directions say...not bad...esp. if you use them for a sheppards pie or filler , or potato cakes , put a little chesse on top...MMmmm

Growing up, My mama would make them all the time for us. A few years ago, she started making mashed taters from scratch. She was amazed at the difference.

I keep a box of flakes around for things

Breading for fried fish
thickening soup

I have several of these in my pantry. I have the Yukon Gold and the original with the peels inside. I think they are very good. Obviously the real thing is better but I travel a lot and sometimes when I come home and in a hurry, these really hit the spot.

It doesn't take all that long to boil and mash potatoes. And yes, I use butter on mine, not margarine, to tie it in with the toast thread.

I use them all the time. I work 12 hour midnight shifts and the wife works during the day. When I have to get up to make supper for the kids, this is what I use (depending on the meal of course). I'm just to lazy to whip up the real things.

Instant mashed potatoes are OK, but I find it just as easy to make real ones because I just chop some russet golds with the skin on, add them to a pot, fill to the top of the potatoes with water and turn on the stove. It takes about 1 minute to toss in some milk, butter, and scallions and mash when they are done.
I think my problem with instant mashed potatoes is that I can't find ones I like more than the ones my school cafeteria served. I hated almost everything ever served to me at school and I was always really happy whenever they had mashed potatoes.

Obviously the real thing is the best but on occasion I find myself without potatoes. When that occurs, I use instant. I have the Idioahans and they are very good.

Instant potatoes is where my husband has drawn a "line in the sand"!!!!!
I have never ( in 40+ years of marriage) ever even bought a box and brought it home. I fear that the DPD would be investigating a murder if that were to happen.
Our son, however, uses them all the time and was even brave enough to fix and serve them to his Dad....of course, he never told dear old Dad that they were out of a box.....he's not quite that brave!

I'll use them once in a great while. I have nothing against them, but they need some serious doctoring with butter.
But I do suggest them to alot of my customers for rodent control. Mice will eat the dry flakes (they love the stuff). Then once the mouse drinks some water, the spuds expand in their guts killing them. Makes a nice non-toxic, organic alternative to chemicals.

Only thing I have ever used instant potatoes for is breading to fry stuff. They also make a pretty good thickening agent. Making real mashed is so simple why bother?

A manager for Old Country Buffet told me about Idahoan Real 10 years ago after I asked him how I could make potatoes as good as they were serving at the time. I was buying them in supermarkets in a approx. one pound package, but they started to disappear from supermarket shelves. While I doctor them up with butter, sour cream and black pepper, they are closer to made-from-scratch than any other type I ever tried.

As a kid I loved instant mashed potatoes. I'm not sure why, it was probably because they didn't have the lumps that my mom's potatoes had.

I still don't like my mom's mashed potatoes, but I also turned against the instant kind as well. I much prefer red bliss potatoes that are smashed.

Thanks for the tip. Paradise turns out to be Paradise Valley Creamy Instant Mashed Potatoes. From this I learned that the Idahoan Real potatoes are also now made by the same company, North American Foods, LLC. It is a merger of RD Offut, Idahoan Foods and United II Potato Growers of Idaho. This may explain the rejiggling of former Idahoan products.

I never thought to use them to thicken soup (a great idea!) or as breading. Does the breading with them come out similar to panko (Japanese) breadcrumbs? I'm addicted to those and make great oven baked chicken fingers with them. It seems like they would be similarly crunchy or should I just stick with the panko?

All of you upper crust snobs who have the gall to say I would NEVER serve instant potatoes make me gag. I suppose you roast and grind your own coffee beans and also grind your own peanuts for peanut butter. Oh yeah, and churn your own butter. Get off the horse and join the real world. We all use premade products every day. Every one every day. Got it?

I like instant mashed potatoes, if I don't have any potatoes in the house and have a craving for mashed potatoes I always have a box on hand.

Even Julia Child said they are OK with cream and plenty of butter, if they are good enough for Julia then they are good enough for me, she happens to be a personal hero of mine.

I wouldn't hesitate to serve them to friends. With enough cream and butteer they are fine!

Baccccccccck in my Chef says it was the mark of an inferior cook t thicken clam chowde with instant spuds. Noone would ever know unles you told them and the result is suprisingly good.
For a fish coating I mix 1/3 breadcrumbs, 1/3 bisquick and 1/3 instant mashed. Its delicious. It tastes like the fish has a french fry batter.

I also use the pre-mashed potatoes. The brand I use is Yoders, don't know if these are regional or not. I add some extra butter, salt and pepper. They taste great, my family loves them. Really handy when everyone is tired and ready to eat.

I use instant potatoes for thickening gravies, soups, stews etc.because I can't have gluten (wheat, barley, rye, oats)
Please, someone, tell me how to use them as coating for fried fish.

mbrookes - go to the Hungry Jack website - they have recipes for oven fried chicken and oysters so you can probably get an idea for how to do fish using seasonings and such to suit your taste.

I really didn't know that instant potato flakes could be used in so many different ways.

The Idahoan Real Premium Mashed Potatoes...I haven't tried the other you mentioned...but heck...for $5.00 and the box makes 64 servings..it's cheap enough to try them all!

God bless y'all! Fakey flakey dried tators are a guilty pleasure to me. I worked for a few years as the dreaded "school cook". We worked with all the somewhat scary "commodities" from Uncle Sam. Believe me, those commodies were used gratefully at times and other times, with humor. ( OMG...what to do with 20 large cans of low quality salmon with bones...umm, salmon patties that the kids called "cat food".

But, I digress. I came to love and appreciate dried tator flakes done up with reconstituted dry milk and LOTS of real butter. Made in a huge Hobart floor model mixer.

Idanoan's are what I buy. I always have them on hand so, I make them when I want them, in single servings, and to me they are good.

I don;t like the 'powdered'instant potatoes but do like the 'flake' type.

UncleVic,
But how do you sleep through all those little mouse explosions? -- I would think that it might get a bit noisy at your place....
