Another something new and bizarre (like ziti pizza) I am noticing in NY is salad pizza. It is essentially a salad on a pizza. I don't mean vegetable pizza. This is gobs of fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, salad dressing, all chopped up in strips. Reminds me of that taco salad stuff you can also buy.

It does not look appetizing at all. Has this monstrosity crept out from NYC yet?

If you want salad- order a salad! But please, don't put it on pizza! That almost sounds like sacrilige (sp). Pizza should have basic ingredients and look like pizza- not a salad without a bowl! Just my 2 cents worth.

I like it.

I've been doing this for quite sometime when I make a pie at home. Started off with a bit of Arugula and shaved parm, lightly dressed with a bit of lemon juice and olive oil....but it's grown to include other lettuces, and veggies.

I've only dressed with Lemon juice or red wine vinegar and olive oil.

Got the idea from a Bertucci's years ago.

I have had two versions...one where they take a regular slice of cheese pizza and throw salad on top. This tastes like salad on a slice of pizza. I don't get it or like it.

The other version I have had is from a local shop that serves a thicker than normal round pizza crust that is baked all by itself without sauce or cheese...not a slice of pizza or finished pie... with chopped salad on top, crumbled gorgonzola or shaved parmesan, topped with a nice dressing they make themselves. The dressing soaks nicely into the "crust" and the whole thing is quite good. It is "pizza" only in the sense there is a crust on the bottom and it is served in wedges/slices.

Like anything else...when done right...it is GOOD!

New? I guess if you consider the mid 80's new, salad pizza has been served here on Long Island since at least that time. I first saw it at a little pizzeria in West Hempstead called Pietro's. Gone now, they made a good slice, and a buddy of mine raves to this day over their 'garlic' pie. Which, he used to order for dinner; when I came in to the office in the morning, the garlic scent would still be hanging heavy in the office!

I don't think it started in NY. I've seen it for a while and I'm blaming California on this one. I have no problem with it if it tastes good. You don't have to order it. I bet eating salad on a nicely oiled and garliced pizza crust makes it an unwise choice for dieters, but people like to fool themselves.

excellent combination of two of her favorites- pizza and salad !

Pizza can,and always was whatever you want to put on a crust...Italians have been doing that for many decades. There is no sacrilage when it comes to pizza...no basic ingredients...a pizza margherita(plain) is just one style...and has been for generations. Salad pizza, if you're in the mood for it...is fine!!!!!

Yeah, and I mostly agree with you...the salad pizza would even appeal to ME if the toppings were at least sliced/chopped up so they would lay down and be settled onto the surface....but to see a pile of leaves and stuff just tossed onto the pizza, is, to me, dumb.
I would enjoy it if there was lettuce, etc., IN the pizza, so that each bite had a cheesey, tomatoey salad theme. THAT sounds good to me.
How do you eat this "salad pizza" if there are big chunks of iceberg lettuce just dumped on top?

Good point, a pile of leaves would be awkward to eat unless you cut it with a knife and ate it with a fork. Flat, it would work,especially with lots of extra vergin Olive oil ans spices places over the crust..and then drizzled on top!...hey,this is sounding better and better!

It is pretty chopped up. You can't put it in the pizza because the lettuce would wilt like a Nationals closer brought in to keep a two run lead in the 8th. Sorry, it's that time of year again. I bought a lot of ticket to what are sure to be some very bad losses. Anyway...The lettuce would lose the crispness and chill that is needed to make it unique or desireable. Do a slight fold and it pretty much stays on. I usually have some cheese an meat dripping from my pizzas anyway so a little mess is nothing new. Better half a leaf of lettuce on my pants than a chunk of sausage.

Let the hot dough cool and then place the well chopped salad on, after you sprinkle with the oil and spices... press down slightly..then more dressing drizzled on! It'd work fine!

Oh no, you want the dough hot. That's part of it, too. Like a warm breadstick in each bite. You really don't need to coat the lettuce. It'll hold. Lettuce does not jump of it's own free will.

Hmm, hot or cold? And, I have some flat bread things in the fridge? Oh, I made a huge salid last night w/ thin sliced fried deli turkey, ham, and whatever else I could think to put in it. It was real good but I have about half of it left, hmmm?

I hear flat bread pizza is real popular in some areas.

Aha - now we have an existential question: What is pizza?
Is it anything on a flat bread? It does not need tomato sauce, it does not need cheese. What about English muffin pizza? Oh, who knows?

PS: The salad pizza I refer to is the non-designer type. Just pieces of fresh lettuce, onion, tomato. Yuk.

Anytime I'm eating pizza with a side salad, I always put the cold salad on the hot pizza.

When I lived on the Upper East Side, I would eat salad pizza from Anna Maria's (85th and 1st) at least twice a week. They closed or moved or sold the name or something. It was absolutely wonderful and I miss it. Their version was warm pizza crust with standard pizza sauce, piled high with chopped lettuce, roasted peppers, sliced tomatoes and pepperoncini. I would top it with their house Italian dressing. MAN I miss that place!

NYNM, you just reminded me why I gave up the study of philosophy. It just goes on and on about definitions! :~)

Some folks call it "flabread pizza". Oh, how about those Stoffer's french bread pizza's?

I have the flat bread and I have the salad. Ok, I'll call it a "kinda round flat bread kinda salad thingy". Hmmm, maybe some tomato sauce would be good, under the salid???

The real pizza salad thing does sound good also. Or... can you call that real pizza?

One thing I do know... Real pizza don't have no beens! :~)

I kind of like the contrast of the crunchy pizza crust with the salad toppings. California Pizza Kitchen had one with arugula and gorgonzola cheese with pears and hazelnuts...it was different but very good..I love all kinds of pizza including the more traditional ones!

First time I had in was in 1996 at Tuscan Oven in Norwalk, CT. Not on the menu, just a special for a party. Still it had gotten that far out of NYC, and that was 12 years ago.

I would gladly eat a salad pizza -- as long as the salad was cold and not wilted! A cheese pizza w/salad with any of these dressings - parmesan peppercorn, ranch, blue cheese, greek, a balsamic - would be delicious. I routinely eat salad and french bread sandwiches. Why not this? I've seen weirder things - like a burger served between two slices of pizza - than a salad pizza.

Dive, there may be things you should not put on rice, but not that I've seen.

NYNM, we may need a thread here about the definition of pizza. Those winapuka folks just don't have it right. And be carefull w/ your typos. You could start another Bay Corn revolution! :~)

How about flat bread, or pizza crust, with olive oil and some kind of good cheese, let it cool and top with salid. A two kinds of deli meat, blck and green olives, avacado, tomatos, mushrooms, and parm cheese. Or, tomato sauce under the cheese? The possibilities are endless!

Well darn. All these years of adding red pepper flakes and garlic powder after they bring the pizza to me and I had no idea I was making it NOT A PIZZA. I don't know what I was eating but it was delicious.

Like I said, we need a thread for the definition. What we say will be the final word! In my book anyway.......

Lee, that does not explain those "french bread" pizza that Stouffers makes.

Porker and Dive, we also need a thread on how to decipher strings of smileys! More than one = a string. TPRI = the possibilities are endless. R = are. :~)

I've never tried salad on a pizza. However, in my mind's eye, I can easily see a "white" pizza (no tomatoes, just oil, garlic, some herbs and grated cheese) served right out of the oven with a cool salad on top. You could even make the salad into a kind of antipasto salad with various cured meats, ripe tomatoes, roasted peppers, sliced onion, olives, etc., etc. Even some hard boiled eggs would work on this. Drizzle with good oil and vinegar. Sounds good, no?

The author who pointed out that all ingredients need to be cooked on a pizza has missed a few (not so outrageous) combinations I ate in Italy...granted, not certified as authentic Neapolitan, but still.
I enjoyed pizzas with fresh arugula and in one case, some kind of watercress (?) like green which was piled fresh on the pizza, with perhaps another ingredient, like prosciutto, with a drizzle of good olive oil. Delicious, and yes, you did have to eat it with a knife and fork, but then most Italians eat the serving size round pizzas with a fork and knife anyway.

Maybe the thicker Pizza Rustica would work with na great fresh salad and some balsamic viniger drizzled on it...or a spinach salad with some bacon bits in oil!
