Mexican Food In Connecticut

Connecticut has historically had the worst Mexican food. Now we are starting to see better food in the Bodegas. I recommend Las Palmas on Fort Street in Norwalk.

If you're in the greater New Haven area, try Baja on the Boston Post Rd. in Orange. Not much in the way of atmosphere, but the food is FANTASTIC.....very authentic. A Salsa Bar to die for, all homemade.

My favorite in Connecticut has got to be Jalepeno Heaven on the post road in Branford. The food tastes pretty authentic to me. But I've never been south of the border.

I visited Virgina on a business trip, I'm from California, I stopped in at a mexican place for dinner. What a mistake, the food was bland, no spice & I overheard at another table a lady complain that the hot sause was to hot, boy she would never make it in California. The hot sauce was so mild it was almost tomato sauce. I've only been back east once, but that one time led me to believe that there really isn't a true good mexican resturant on the east coast. That was serveral years ago, maybe things have changed since then, I hope so, there is nothing like good carnitas & tortillas & a good Corona w/lime, don't forget the hot sausa.

ed, i agree with you about jalapeno heaven. haven't been there in a year or 2, but i remember it being wonderful (and i have been south of the border!)
do try baja if you're in the orange area.

Has anyone tried La Boca in Middletown? Any good?

I lived in Fresno for 41 of my 46 years and I travelled to the East coast several times each year the last 10 or so. I agree, this area isn't known for it's Mexican food. When I would have to come out here for 2 weeks or more I made sure to get my local favorite mexican fix before leaving Fresno and then again almost immediately upon flying home. Several times we drove from the airport to the restaraunt.

Having lived in the Mid-Atlantic region for the past 5 years and with the influx of Mexicans to the region we can now get decent mexican food. Almost as good as home. Although it is still hard to get great tortillias at the drop of a hat, usually have to drive to the DC metro area to get really fresh really good ones.

Best mexican in CT, hands down, is Coyote Falco in Hartford. 635 New Britain Ave. Everything is homemade right down to the hotsauce. If you are in the area try it, you will not be disappointed.

I have heard stories that Wood's Pit in Morris, CT has good BBQ AND Mexican. Anyone have more info on them? I got to go and try them myself.

Ole Mole on High Ridge Road in Stamford is good -- very fresh, excellent chipotle salsa.

They have another location in Fairfield, on Black Rock Tpk.

Yikes! I've been meaning to get into a forum at some point, but never have. However, the subject of Mexican food in Connecticut - decent Mexican food, I should say - has finally gotten me going. For the most part, it doesn't exist, at least not in the north-central area of the state. That said....

Coyote Flaco is indeed great - not oversauced, not overcheesed, tasty, fresh, with good sauces - I have not traveled south either, but my husband and I cook from various very authentic cookbooks, esp. Elizabeth Lambert Ortiz, Diana Kennedy and our fave, Rick Bayless - and I can attest to the palty pickings in Connecticut once you've eaten the real thing and cooked the real thing, labor intensive as it can be.

Also good, but in a very modest way, is Monte Alban on Farmington Avenue in Hartford - fresh, nicely done, just not as flavorful as it might be.

I eat a Wood's Pit all the time. The Mexican is good (but not as good as Coyote Flaco) - they have green chili - something most New Englanders have never heard of. I have only had their chimichanga because when I go I usually order BBQ - their BBQ is Fantastic!

Senor Pancho's in Monroe used to be pretty good, before it burned down. I haven't tried it since it has been rebuilt. Only, don't have a margarita, they taste good, but have very little alcohol, and at the price they charge, they should. We drink beer. They have strolling mariachi players on the weekend, and all the servers seem to be from Mexico. The food is reasonably priced and good.

Try Tamales on Mill Plain Road in Danbury, really great steak burritos

Ditto on Wood's BBQ. I think it is better than Uncle Willie's
I like Tequila's in Waterbury for Mexican but don't claim to be an informed consumer of Mexican food...now if it were Seafood and BBQ that would be different

I've recently moved to Connecticut from California and was hoping someone could suggest where I can find corn husks? I've been ordering them online but it would be so much more convienent to be able to shop locally.
