1st Trip report - Norristown, Pa./Santangelo's
-
Wed, 04/2/08 3:58 PM
I stopped for breakfast today at one my favorite RoadFood joints. Santangelo's Cafe, 1513 E Ridge Pike in Norristown, Pa. While Santangelo's will give any Philly establishment a run with its cheese steak Zep, its the breakfast that I crave. This is a shot of my Meat Lovers Breakfast Zep. Sausage, bacon, pork roll and eggs for $6.00. For another $1 I add roasted long hot peppers and cheese.

Nicely done. Is that cheese or gravy on your breakfast. Being in the North, I'm going to guess cheese.

Very nice joerogo. Those long hot peppers sound like a great addition to the breakfast! How hot are they? What exactly is a zep?

Thanks all for the kind words. billyboy, In that neck of the woods Subs are called Zepplins or Zeps for short. The long hots are my favorite, not too hot and great pepper flavor. I put them on everything.

<<In that neck of the woods Subs are called Zepplins or Zeps for short.>> Is there some difference, like Zeps never have letuce on them or something? I was at Eve's Lunch on Sandy Hill Road a few years ago while passing thru Norristown. Great Zeps, but I don't remember exactly what made them different from Hoagies/heros/Subs. --Ken

Zeps do not have lettuce and are usually made with cooked salami although growing up I always got a hard salami version. It is a highly localized term in a small area of Philadelphia's western suburbs.

I was in Norristown today so I thought I would add to this thread. If you are in the neighborhood I would highly recommend a stop at Santangelo's. Less than one mile from 476/Blue Route. I took a shot of the steaks and hot sandwich page of the menu. [img] I ordered The chicken superimo. There had to be a pound of perfectly cooked chicken tenders along with provolone cheese, roasted long hot peppers and broccoli rabe on an 8" roll. The flavors all melted together and complemented each other. $8.00

Hey, Joe! That was good! I'm going to ask two of my coworkers (a mom and daughter) about Santangelo's. And would you believe they live in Norristown and make a daily commute to Marlton, NJ? They're nuts!

Joe those are terrific! And those prices are not bad. I have to say, as a Southerner I have like zip experience with the creature known as 'broccoli rabe'--it's the larval form of the broccoli, correct? And is it pickled or fresh?

Nancypalooza, When you look at the size of the sandwich, The prices are downright cheap. Great Husband and Wife team. My friend got a standing O when he finished his Belly Buster. The only thing I could say about Rabe' is that it is in the same family as Broccoli. If prepared correctly, its heaven. If not, its as bitter as hell. Its fresh and comes in bunches with more leaves than crowns. Drop it in boiling water just until it turns bright green. Then strain it and saute with olive oil, garlic, crushed red pepper, salt and pepper. Then mix it with pasta, put it on a sandwich or eat it as a side. Believe me, its a beautiful thing. Joe P.S. There is a lot I need to learn about Southern cooking.

Thanks for the explanation--that sounds like something I'd like. When you go to learn about Southern cooking, don't let anybody tell you that lesson 1 is chitlins. Chitlins are like, doctoral level.

Give me your opinion of santangelo's compared to the "DownTown" places. Personally I prefer santangelo's. I know they start with frozen beef, but its slow cooked. I believe that helps it retain its flavor. Then you have the price and size. Also great atmosphere.

I was in Norristown very briefly on Sunday; my brother and sister-in-law, however, were able to get me a "zep" and some philly sticky buns from the Corropolese Deli. One word: YUM! The sticky buns, especially, were truly heaven. Excuse me while I gobble another fish oil pill, though. LOL

Sorry to hear about this. I was lucky enough to have had a Superimo after reading your post (I posted about it somewhere but apparently not in this thread) and stopping there on the way back to NJ from a morning meeting nearby. Great, and unique, sandwich! So, thanks again. Hey, my wife just asked me to make a quick run to the Asian Produce market over in Plainfield for a few things for tomorrow's Christmas Eve dinner. And on the list is Broccoli Rabe. Maybe I'll ask her to cancel the Lasagna and make Chicken Superimo instead. Right....

You're welcome. I've been there a few times since they moved and there's much more room inside and it's way easier to park now.

I was at the new Santangelo's today. Beautiful place, expanded menu, same great food.
