My favorite right now is my Dirty Jalapeno Martini

1 teaspoon Juice from Jar of Pickled Jalapenos
3 ounces Bombay Saphire
Shake hard and long in shaker with Ice I want the murky look and ice crystals

Pour and strain into frozen Martini Glass
Garnish with 3 Jalapeno Rings on a toothpic

I bought a bottle of Lillet Blanc. It is completely different from the vermouth they pour at a bar. Outstanding stuff.

Martinis do not evolve. A martini is what it is. Anything else is, of course, something else. Suggesting otherwise is the same as saying that a beer is a roasted pepper after it evolves.

W. Somerset Maugham says stirred not shaken. Ian Fleming says shaken not stirred. Maugham preceded Fleming. I say whatever keeps the gin sharper and I have to believe that is stirred. So, gin, ice, a faint hint of vermouth, and an olive.

I had a drink served in a martini glass. It consisted of Absolut Peppar vodka, a bit of olive juice, and some olives. It was good, just the right amount of olive juice, too much & you can't drink it. Too little & how is that a 'dirty'? Anyway, would have tasted better with garlic or bleu cheese stuffed olives instead of plain.

What would you call that ^^^^ then, if not a martini?

Gotta agree with Hoffman on this one!! I have been a Bartender for the last few years and the only recipe that I know is:


Ice cubes
1 jigger good gin or vodka
1/4 oz dry vermouth
olives or lemon twist for garnish

Place ice in shaker. Pour vermouth over ice and swirl. Strain. Add gin and shake for about 15 times vigorously. Pour into a rocks glass for " on the rocks" or strain into chilled cocktail glass for "up" and garnish. Drink at leisure, but not too many!!!!

Thread killers my aching back. There are people who correctly point out that you can give anything a name, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not the correct name.

Well, you could call it anything you wanted to call it. I know that the name I like for a drink made with vodka, vermouth and an olive is Stalini.

But, now that Absolut is advertising in Mexico that all of the American Southwest, plus California, Utah and Colorado, is Mexico then I not only won't touch that stuff, but I tossed out a bottle of it and so informed the company.

Good. Now you can discuss drink variations. Calling all the different concoctions Martinis to me is the same as globbing on extra garbage plate ingredients on a classic Margherita pizza or putting fruit in beers. To me that is no appreciation of the basic classic, original taste. I'm not against variations but when you change something or create something new, call it something else lest you destroy the appreciation of the original.

Would a more up to date version be called a Putini?

It cetainly would, although the name Stalini was given to the drink just a couple of years ago, and accepted by Grampy, a famed author who writes about cocktails.

Gibson, but you can't find good cocktail onions any more in a salt brine rather than vinegar.

Whoever it was who first thought to substitute a tiny preserved onion for the olive in the Martini had the imagination and decency to give the drink its own name - the Gibson.

If those of you who like to drink strange and possibly tasty and even healthful concoctions from Martini glasses, would exercise the same imagination originality and decent respect for the most famous cocktail of all time, those of us who love and revere the original Martini would have no reason for complaint.

Boyardee, typical of all too many bartenders now-a-days (especially those of the female persuasion), participates in the sad deterioration of the noble bartending profession. He has it right in his recipe for a Martini when he lists Gin as an ingredient, but then he allows that tasteless alcohol called Vodka to be an ingredient in the same drink. As Hoffman has correctly pointed out that Vodka concoction is, by the dictate of a distinguished commission of Roadfooders, who sat and deliberated long and hard over a proper name, called a Stalini.

As to that oafish Englishman called "BondJamesBond"; first, no one has ever given the English any prizes for good taste in food and drink (well, I will grant they seem to enjoy good Scotch whiskey); second, I dont know what that was that BondJamesBond ordered, but it is a crime against humanity to infer that it is a Martini. Third, if you like the taste of bruised Gin and Vermouth, and you enjoy participating in the torture of those innocent products, then go ahead and shake your Martini. Those of us who are caring sensitive and tasteful citizens will continue to stir our Martinis "...to the tune of a waltz".

Michael try this Martini Inspired Drink
Blueberry Martini Jelly Shots


Ingredients

10 1/2 ounces Stoli (Stolichnaya) Blueberry vodka

2 ounces simple syrup

14 sheets of gelatin

About 35 fresh blueberries

Directions

Off heat, combine vodka and simple syrup in a small saucepan.

Add the gelatin sheets one at a time to vodka mixture, breaking up sheets if necessary so that they can be completely submerged.

Allow gelatin to sit in vodka mixture until it is soft and pliable, 5-10 minutes.

When gelatin is soft, heat saucepan over low heat, stirring, until gelatin is dissolved and incorporated into vodka mixture, about 10 minutes. Remove pan from heat.

Check contents of pan; if there are any flecks of gelatin that have not dissolved, strain the mixture to remove any solid particles. Place a blueberry in the bottom of each individual cocktail mold, and carefully pour vodka mixture into each mold. Refrigerate molds until set, preferably overnight. These cocktails will keep, refrigerated, for as long as two days.

I might be wrong (frequently am), but these "holland style" onions are not meant to be put in cocktails. They're better suited for a chicken pot pie.

You don't need gelatin sheets or fancy molds. Just use unflavored powdered Gelatin and pour it into an ice cube tray- or, if like us, you threw out all the ice cube trays when you bought a new refrigerator a few years ago, buy some of those little one or two once paper cups. An egg carton lined with saran also works, I'm told. I got the recipe I use for Jelloshots right off these Roadfood forums a couple of years ago.

I just made 2 Martini Inspired Drinks

7 oz Bombay Saphire
8 peppercorns crushed with mortar and pestal
1 Pinch dried crushed Jalapeno flakes from Penzey's
I let it sit for 1 1/2 hours
Then ran it thru a coffee filter

Then into the shaker with a small splash Vermouth
Good bite good pepper taste good drink...Russ

My favorite Martini-inspired drink is: a second Martini. Sometimes I'm inspired to have 2 or 3 more.

my local upscale mexican place makes something they call a CosmoRita... gold tequila, cranberry juice, Sprite, and a floater of Chambord in a glass with a pink sugared rim... a real girl drink but I love it!

Similiar to the mixed drink---Perrier & Water!

If at home, a big glass with lots of ice, lots of Grey Goose and take a whole fresh lime and squeeze til nothing else comes out of the limes. Drink it.

So Swirsk - your variation on a Martini is something that is absolutely nothing like a Martini as far as the ingredients and preperation. I guess the "drink it" part is the connection.

But I did know someone who homebrewed a beer using Grape-Nuts(R) (well, the Kroger clone) as an adjunct. It tasted pretty good, too. I didn't try it with red peppers, though.
