I remember requesting this for my birthday party when I was a kid growing up. No summer was complete without one! :)

But recently I had it again after years and years and... is it my tastebuds that have changed, or does it taste a bit different? I don't recall it tasting so... watermelony. In fact, I don't remember it tasting like watermelon much at all when I was little. The lime sherbet rind was exactly the same, so I'm not sure if it's different now, or if I'm just insane. :P

I don't think it tastes like watermelon. I think it tastes the same. We have it every summer.

I think Friendly's changed who makes their ice cream. That or they are just skimping on ingredients. My favorite ice cream flavor of all time used to be Friendly's Chocolate Almond Chip. 2-3 years ago it changed. Tastes like chocolate flavored chalk now. And the chocolate almonds, which the ice cream once was packed with are hardly there. They are much smaller too.

I don't think Friendly's is as good in recent years. We do, though, enjoy the watermelon roll at least once a year. It means summer!

Friendly's makes its own ice cream in its own factory in Massachusetts. Could be different ingredients, as the rising cost of, well, everything in food production has prompted substitutions by many companies. Friendly's has also been going through some management and ownership turmoil, as I recall.

Tomorrow (Saturday 6/7) Friendly's is giving away ice cream from noon to 5P - says participating locations, they don't have a list on their website, but head's up!

We tried the Friendly ice cream cakes once or twice, but my family would always return to Carvell.
