It looks like you've changed your destination. If so, Our recco is head to the Low Desert for a Date Shake in Indio, Ca and then ramp-up 62 to the High Desert for meals and a stay at our old favorite on 66, in Amboy, Ca. We haven't been to either in years, but they're timeless so you won't be let down. EDIT: How did you remove the tumbleweed without editing ??? It's gone, but now I hear Sons of The Pioneers.

The Deck, a short walk from the Holiday Inn/Waterfront is a pretty good little place. Steaks and seafood. I've not been to any of the places in Old Town.

Gracias, EoS. By any chance do you know if Portsmouth's Comfort restaurant (on High Street and which I passed this evening) is, in any way, related to the wonderful eatery of the same name in Richmond, Virginia?

i95, I cannot address your question. Don't know the answer. Are you in Portsmouth for Harbor Fest? I wish I could have seen all the ships.

Yes, the Comfort in Portsmouth is the same as the Comfort in Richmond. And it is really good. The Bier Garden in Portsmouth is also pretty tasty and there beer selection is excellent if you're into that sort of thing.

i95 Sorry, been out of town. And Portsmouth is not a regular destination. However, I'll ask my brother and get back to you if it is not too late. Cathy Appended: Ok, this is the only place I've eaten in downtown Portsmouth. We joined family sometime in the last year for Sunday buffet brunch. I thought it was very good. It is probably even better sit-down. The sevice was so-so (considering it was a *buffet*!). http://www.bruttis.com/index.html I think if you want a *really* nice upscale meal that uses local specialties try: http://www.vintagetavernvirginia.com/ I would think it would be about a 20 minute drive from downtown Portsmouth. Cathy, sorry I couldn't help more.

That much I do know and the answer is "yes", but I don't know how it compares. Cathy

OK, I'll be the contrarian here, but there are quite a few good dining options along High Street in downtown Portsmouth, many reasonably priced (along with a good coffee shop to boot). We've been to Montgomery Grill (about 6 blocks west of the Ferry Dock) twice in the past month. Excellent "comfort" food and reasonable prices...

Portsmouth has quite a few decent options these days.. However, Comfort is closed now. Try Barons for a simple burger and fries place. The Biergarden is great for German food and beer. Service there is "European" but if your in a hurry you will miss the charm of the place. Brutti's is good as us a place called stove.

Make sure and order a cheese plate.
