I make one of these every year for my daddys birthday. It's his favorite cake. The recipe I use does not use a fluffy frosting on the outside because I don't like it. The frosting is the same as the filling. I also do not use alcohol, I use white grape juice instead. Yes, it adds a different taste but I feed the cake to children and folks who never imbibe alcohol like my mamaw and daddy.

Mama sometimes make just one layer and top it with the filling and we'd have it on picnics. Along with hummingbird cake, coconut cake, and pig pickin cake, a lane cake was served without the fluffy frosting at dinner on the grounds. With the fluffy frosting it was a christmas cake with lots of cherries on top. (I always scraped the icing off lol, I really liked the filling)
