That picture is the best, bar none, as far as I am concerned.

Unless you are a New Englander or a Long Islander you can't know the feeling------------it won't look as good as Bar-b-q to you other folks, but it is the Nectar of the Gods -------- Amen.

My friend ancient-while i am not an east coaster, i do appreciate good, fresh seafood courtesy of my parents.They took us out east on wonderful trips when I was young, and I learned to love oysters, shrimp, etc.Was eating raw oysters at the age of 10.Als picture and review is mouthwatering...

Speaking as someone that grew up on the Gulf Coast, home of Apalachicola and Bon Secour oysters and the featured restaurant, I can promise you that there are people outside of New England and Long Island that appreciate oysters.

Thank you all for the kudoes! I remind you that I am a Southern Californian by heritage and upbringing, transplanted to the Mid-West after serveral moves around the country. All that signifies a willingness to love and appreciate the good things we find all over the U S A!! One of the outstanding things we find along our Southern Coast is Wonderful Seafood in an abundance and at a price that makes indulgence an easy thing to appreciate!
Our visit to the Gulf Coast and Mobile this past winter offered a great opportunity to enjoy the best seafood and also the best BBQ we have had on a roadtrip in a long time. I will add that sharing the experience with our roadfood friends made it all the more enjoyable!

I saw once ---James Stewart was a country lawyer defendin' this here girl----No that ain't the one it was Jimmy Stewart (same guy) and this time he is a country boy Senator in Washington. Two of the best muvin' pictures ever made.

So they do have oysters in other parts of the country----good. You are all lucky--you don't have to eat Bar-b-q and hot dogs all the time then.

But that picture sure set my mouth a-watering. Growing up inbetween Oyster Bay on the north and Blue Point (Home of the famed Blue Point Oyster) on the south, I just thought we cornered the market.

Your Honor Mayor Bowen----I will take your word for the quality of the
food on the gulf. I have never been there but that picture sure does tempt
me to rev up old Betsy and take a ride. May have to break into the piggy
bank for gas this year though.

Here are a couple of samples from stops we made last winter.
You have seen the Raw Oysters, you you know my preference, but at Hunts Seafood in Dothan AL and several other places, we enjoyed piles of small Crab Claws. Breaded and Deep-fried tidbits that tasted sooooo good.



Hunts also put out a nice combination of appetizer plates Raw and Baked Oysters by the dozen. Here are our raw and cheese/bacon topped baked samples





Then we have the dinner plate of Shrimp and Oysters to top off our seafood evening !




In Mobile at Wintzells Oyster House, they offer a sampler platter of four varieties...four of each variety! If you like different toppings on your Baked Oysters, this is the way to enjoy them!



Now you get a better picture of why we love the Gulf Shore Seafood !!

Yes sir, Mariner, we have lots of oysters up here thank God! They pull them in from Katchemak Bay down by Homer. On the Seward Highway there used to be a few gals that sold oysters by the roadside. We would stop and buy 2 dozen and slurp them down with a squish of lemon. Then the price of fuel........so the gals are no longer there.

I, too, love raw oysters. Anyone remember the line by Jack Elam on the short-lived sitcom Easy Street when he said, "I can just imagine the guy who first ate a raw oyster and said, this looks like something that fell out of an ox's nose, I think I'll eat it."

Folks on the Gulf Coast certainly do cook their oysters. When I was in college we would go to Apalachicola and buy them by the bushel, shuck them and cook them on a grill on the half shell. The key is to not overcook them. A also really like them steamed. They do all kinds of fancy things with them in New Orleans as I am sure you have heard.

Lisa tell your "Old Gals" by the road that they should dig straight
down---they won't get to China but they have a good chance of hitting
oil right where the price of fuel put them out of business.

OK, I'll tell the gals to dig for oil instead of oysters but oysters are sure better eating!

Actually that "R" month thing doesn't apply up here. They're tastiest in the summer and never milky.

Dear Ann,
I lived in Asheville, NC for the year 2004. The only oysters I saw that year
were in a Chinese Buffet in Bavard -----and people kept filling up on them
going back for more and more. In fact one fellow went up, while still in
line to be seated as we were, filled a plate and brought them back for his
wife (I am assuming here) and himself to munch on during the wait. That
tarted an attack on the oysters by the waitees.

Seeing that the buffet would soon be minus oysters the owner or manager or
whoever told everyone in line to knock it off----that did not go well with
some burly folks who were there to eat for the week. So the owner/manager/
whoever took the oysters off the serving cart.

I figured we were in for a riot so I took the lovely MaryAnn and scramed.
Went to a nice restaurant in Horseshoe that didn't have any oysters at all.
Had to settle for ribs----which were excellent !!!!

And----Lisa "all yeaR Round oysteRs" ----aRe y'all woRking foR the Alaskan
ChambeR of CommeRce by chance ?????? Do they have to break the ice to get
to them??

Sorry but I'm not that familiar with Greensboro. My "eating territory" is from Raleigh east.

How's this for a High School Mascot, Nickname. In Hooker Oklahoma, near the Kansas State Line, The High School teams and cheerleaders are known as the Hooker Horny Toads ! How'd you like your Grand-daughter to wear that uniform with pride ???



My favorite, while not as 'classey', is the Tonopah, Nevada High School. Tonopah is an old mining community between Carson City and Las Vegas, If ever there was a "Middle of Nowhere" Tonopah would be it. The teams are known as the MUCKERS, a term relating to the use of high pressure water to mine ore from surface hillsides in past years.

Now back to our Oysters and You theme.

The Apalachicola Oysters are the absolute best oysters in the Universe. Makes my mouth water just thinking about them!

FOOD FIGHT.... WOW... I appreciate all those photos... the seafood look amazing and I agree today's picture is equally impressive... how is a man to choose?

It was the top one(raw). I agree with Mr. Hoffman on this one. I like mine cooked.

We love oysters and other fresh seafood in the South. The sweetest, tastiest oysters on earth are from Gulf oyster beds. I love 'em raw, baked, roasted in shell, fried; anyway you fix 'em, they are the best! Alabama's Bon Secour oysters are as good Appalachicola's. Everyone, your pics are fabulous!
