RE: Food recalls - Fri, 07/4/08 1:30 PM
I bought some ground beef from Kroger last week. As I always do, I portion it out & freeze it, therefore I do not have the original package with expiration date. A newspaper article stated that if you go to Kroger and make a purchase with your Kroger Plus card, it will tell you on your receipt if you purchased recalled meat. I went to Kroger yesterday, and no such warning was on my receipt, so I am hoping it's safe.

My daughter buys a lot of ground beef for her family {she figures @ six times during the recall dates}, and she got a call from someone afiliated with Kroger, telling her to throw away any unused meat. Too late, as they had already eaten it. Luckily no one got ill.

Still, I think it is good that the Plus cards track your purchases. In this sense, it's a good idea.

I've decided simply not to eat any meat, vegetables, or fruit anymore. That'll take care of it!

The only meat I buy is locally raised, organic beef from Wholefoods. For better or worse, I feel more confident in the safety of eating their meat products than anyone else's. Same go's for their chicken and pork as well.

Fresh jalapenos in Texas. Not sure if this is nationwide? They thought it was tomatoes but now say it's jalapenos. I like the pickled ones anyway.

We have had sooo many food and other product recalls that I think the general public has gotten a Ho-Hum additude towards them.
Even the general news stations have back burnered them, no longer the lead story unless there's nothing else to report on.
Hardly a day goes by without some recall or other, I don't think most care anymore. Chow Jim

"Cook the meat to the proper temp. and you could eat read kill"

I have seen plenty of "read kill" in these forums, but have never thought of cooking and eating the author. Interesting concept, Mncorn, You are surely a good ol' boy. How exactly do you go about this endeavor, though. I'm interested in learning.

HALLOWEEN CANDY RECALLED

(you can verify this on snopes: http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/coins.asp

There is a new warning put out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.... Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate coins are being recalled due to the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient in milk product that has caused many infant deaths in china. These candies are sold at Costco, as well as many bulk and dollar stores. Please make sure to check your children’s halloween candy and DO NOT LET THEM EAT THE PIRATE COINS (you know the ones wrapped in the shiny gold foil)

Lovely, but for meat at $9-$40 a pound I think I'd rather get sick.

I think this will be a very difficult time for those places that use Peanut Butter as a main ingredient in anything they try to sell. I am reminded of the sandwich shop in NYC that specializes in gourmet Peanut Butter creations. I would think they will have real problems staying open during this situation.

Dearfolk,
Poor Blakely, Georgia's peanut butter factory is gonna have to close down just like Sylvester's did awhile back until they clean everything up, all because some stupid snake crawled into a silo full of peanuts and ate itself into a swivet. Won't somebody go down there and housebreak those doggone snakes before this salmonella thing gets outta hand? Geez, Louise.

I agree with Mosca-thanks.Unfortunately I ignored earlier warnings and Bob was a victim of the Peter Pan peanut butter problem. We had 2 jars and he had consumed most of them.He was sick as a dog for a week-and thankfully his sister is a doctor and she saw the signs way before the recall. So now when I see your posts, I check immediately. You are providing valuable info.

Yes, We do appreciate the updates. I feel so bad for the folks in KY who have been handed MRE's or similar packets, only to find that some sleazy outfit included unsafe food packets in them. If they are/were being distributed via the Nat'l Guardsmen, how many millions of those meals in a bag went to troops in overseas activities. Somebody's got to held accountable...at the processing plant, and apparently in the inspection service and reporting agency that allowed this to go on for so many months.

Are all these updated peanut postings new or have they been published elsewhere for some time? I.e. is there a reference somewhere that can be looked up? Doling them out daily gives the impression they are newly found. I would think by now all the salmonella peanuts would have been known and pulled. If not, someone is not doing their job. It has scared the industry. Even though jars of peanut butter have supposedly not been affected sales are way down.

Here is an article on how Lund's and Byerly's Foods, a regional grocer, handled the peanut recall in Minneapolis/St. Paul. It is an interesting read. Minnesota has a state health department with a knack for figuring out what is going on.

Still going strong with the salmonella peanuts? I would hope by now they would all be off the shelves. I'm an adventurous soul. I bought a box of Girl Scout peanut butter cookies without checking.

The original PCA scandal started in Blakely, GA.  That is about an hour's drive away from me.  That just seems to show how much our food chain could be in danger.  No.  Most of the political climate seems now geared to financial bailouts of questionable institutions and patrolling our borders.  Lets see.  Tonight I may be having some shrimp imported from Thailand along in a scampi recipe.  I would love to have some fresh Gulf of Mexico shrimp.  So strange.  I live only 100 miles from the gulf's shore; yet no grocery store within my area offers them.  Cheaper to import from Asia; I guess.

Peaches importred from South America; apricots from the middle east; fresh beef imported from who the heck knows where????

I still eat the peanuts though.

Actually, 6star, i ran a deli in a spermarket for years, and we had our own guy that would come and test everthing we made( or had brought in , for that matter) once a month.he did find a salad with listeria once-not one we made, but from a local company, so we pulled it from every one of our stores-no question. And until, after repeated testing at the source of the salad, did we bring it back.So I agree with you-proper testing is not done at every point it should be.I am food certified by the state of Wisconsin for food handling, and I follow strict rules. But not everyone, or most importantly, where the food comes from, does. It makes me crazy...

Yuck --- when we did the auto-checkout at Kroger's last week the receipt showed that a Mrs. Grissom's cheese spread we'd recently bought and consumed had been recalled.  What we ate of it didn't make us sick and we can take the remainder up to Kroger's for a refund.

Maybe it is just me, but I have never been able to understand why anyone (except small children, who will put anything in their mouth because they don't know better) would eat raw cookie dough in any form.  Many companies sell an ice cream with cookie dough in it, and, even though I love cookies, I would never think of eating that flavor of ice cream. (I just feel the cookie dough would spoil the delicious ice cream for me.)

I beleive that most raw cookie dough for ice cream is edible and probably contains no eggs.  you can buy edible raw cookie dough from Cookie Dough Creations - http://www.cookiedoughcreations.com/

But the raw edible cookie dough they sell is not for baking - it has  no eggs nor baking soda, etc.  They also sell baked cookies, presumably with eggs.

David_NYC do you have any idea why the Kroger recalled products are not being listed on the FDA website?  I haven't seen even one of them listed yet with the current Salmonella recalls!  Doesn't the FDA recognize Kroger?  Strange.

6star, I don't know. Kroger has reported recalls to the FDA in the past. They apparently also use Shoppers Card information to contact purchasers of recalled products. The Kroger recall press releases are going out over the AP wire.

This Associated Press story is really frightening.  It is about the current Salmonella contamination of the hydrolyzed vegetable protein used in so many products, which was known (and ignored) for over 3 weeks by its manufacturer, Basic Food Flavors Inc.  The FDA says that the company "knew of salmonella contamination on its equipment after it received the results of a private inspection on Jan. 21" but "continued to distribute the ingredient.....until Feb. 15."  http://apnews.excite.com/article/20100310/D9EBR3480.html

6star, thanks for your vigilance. The recalls rarely apply to anything I have bought, but it sure is nice to know you're out there looking out for us.
