Seven bucks for a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich? Absolutely ridiculous. Also ridiculous is nine bucks for a damned omelet and four dollars for some potatoes. Sheesh!

I have to agree here. Unless I am trapped somewhere such as an airport or movie theater then I would never patronize a place for breakfast that would cost my family of 4 over $50.00!

It is possible that the home fries are included in the cost of the omelette and Stephen just displayed the price of the home fries a la carte.

That may well be, but I've never seen them on a menu for more than a buck and a half -- outside of, say New York.

Of course, I remember a glass of orange juice at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas was four bucks back in the early '80s.

Looks pretty good to me, I'd pay it.

This coming from one who lives in the land of the $10.95 hamburger.

I agree with Mr. Hoffman. Sorry seven bucks...I ain't payin'it. I won't eat at Crackdonald's for a buck and a half. But I won't spend 7 bucks either, no matter how good it looks.

It has been my experience that a diner offering "Spinach and cheese omelet with fresh baked bread and home fries" with the home fries: "al-dente potatoes are sliced thin, mixed in with caramelized onions and a little bit of spicy red pepper" commands a higher price for their breakfast entrees than average. While these labor-intensive menu items might be worth the cost, these establishments tend to price simpler menu items at an excessive price, probably to drive away the people seeking those bargain New York Greek diner-style breakfast specials and the like.

The $7 bacon, egg and cheese sandwich looks like it uses a Nissen/Wonder Bread foodservice English muffin. In such a situation, I always go for their unique menu items. In this case, an item with fresh baked bread.

I have eaten in this restaurant and the food is excellent.

Yes, it is located in a hip college area, close to the seaport and surrounding shops,
but I felt I got my money's worth.

They bake their own bread and I had the most wonderful cinnamon toast I've ever had.
I even drug several loaves of different breads back home with me.

I wouldn't hesitate to go again.

It is certainly more upscale than the local fast food places and the bread is made in the establishment. I would expect it to cost more and it certainly looks more appetizing. How much would I pay??? I do not know but it looks very good.

Here in NY virtually any deli will make you 2 eggs, bacon, and cheese with coffee or juice for $3 to $4. Home fries are usually a buck more.

I gotta go with Bruce though, that is a gooooooood looking sandwich!

Somebody mentioned that it was in a "Hip College area", for the life of me I can't think of one college in that area.
I do visit there often and have seen seen a few schools of hard knocks, but no colleges.
All that being said the area in general is a little over priced for their food and beverage offerings. But then again there is always Gilly's for cheap eats. Chow Jim

I once paid $9.50 for a damn Bacardi and Coke at Navy Pier in Chicago and this was several years ago. It's ridiculous the prices some of these places charge. Of course, no one held a gun to my head. It's just that now days, when you go out on the town you best bring your wallet.

Is it possible that the sandwich came with something else included, like a few slices of melon and maybe e some home fries (not side size, but a bit smaller)?

Its not uncommon for homefries not included except on the more expensice comco meals. I was in shock at Waffle house you had to order steak and eggs to have hashbrowns included! By the time my wife added them to her sausage, toast and 2 eggs it was within a couple bux of my steak and eggs.

The University of New Hampshire is in the area, I had a good buddy that went to school there. My first experience with deep fried pickles took place in the city of Portsmouth, NH. At a decent place called Muddy River, or something to that extent...

Amy & I recommended the Friendly Toast to Stephen, mainly because we LOVE the place. The saddest part is that Portsmouth is no longer a via point for us, because we'd be eating there all the time.

The prices are relative to the experience, much like many NYC places with fabulous yet simple food. I bought pulled pork on a bun at Billyboy's favorite, 'wichcraft, last week. It was $9 for a very small sandwich -- but it was delicious, and I'd recommend that place to everyone.

Low prices for food, gas, etc. are in the past. We can pine for the old days, but we also need to think about how to maximize the time/money that we have. I'm always to pay for truly great Roadfood, and I will be the first to say whether or not it was worth it in the end. The Friendly Toast is well worth the trip! Chris

I thought that I would check how much a sandwich like that would cost at a nice place around here.

Deli Lane Cafe in South Miami:

Deli Egg Sandwich

Well, slap me between two pieces of bread and call me Susan (or a sandwich). Two eggs, bacon, ham, sausage or turkey with cheddar cheese, nestled between two loving pieces of toast or an English muffin. . . . . . .$6.95

Around here you can get a sausage egg McMuffin, 2/$3. I don't know about you guys but...I'm headed for the Golden Arches. For $6.95 the Deli Lane Cafe in South Miami can kiss my ass! We're living in a crazy world but at some point in time common sense must rule the day.

People...we're talking about an egg sam'itch here...not a NY strip steak.

You can download the menu from the restaurant that Don in Miami checked out for us. Here again, they have breakfast specials (two eggs, meat, potatoes, toast for $4.45. Then, they have omelettes including house potatoes or cheese grits plus toast or muffin for only $1-$2 more than their knockoff of a Egg McMuffin.

Maybe someone can explain if it costs so much more money to prepare these bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches. I would gladly spend $1 - $2 more for some of those great sounding egg-based breakfast entrees.

To me, the bacon is way over done, as is the bagel. This is something I would send back and have them re-do, at any price I am paying!!
