Having lived in the Southwest for years I have to recommend the Horseman's Haven in Santa Fe. Looks like a Texaco station but off to the side is a cozy diner full of truckers, restauranters, business people and travellers. Just on the way south out of Santa Fe a true icon for locals. Same hardworking family running the whole shebang. The green chili is local and WILL burn you. The cheeseburger takes up almost a full size dinner plate and the patties are homemade. Excellent breakfast and specials here as well

I once lived in New Mexico and also have an appreciation for the green chili. I remember eating and enjoying green chili cheese burgers at Blake's Lot-A- Burger in NM, and Old Tymer's Cafe in Durango, CO.

So, is it like grilled green chili's laid on top of the pattie? Or a green chili sauce dalloped ontop the pattie?

Even though I haven't eaten that many yet, green chile cheeseburgers are a real favorite of mine. Here is a pic of one from The Owl Bar in San Antonio, NM.

As delicious as the above one was, I would rank the Bobcat Bite's still a little better.

I have been to Horseman's Haven but only for breakfast. I will try their GCC next time. Thanks for tip!

Although this beauty at Judy's Cook House outside of Globe Arizona ranks right up there with one of the best I've ever had.....





This Green Chili Cheeseburger served at Carlsbad Tavern in Scottsdale is my hands down winner thus far, although I am not finished with the search...probably never will be.

Served at a New Mexican restaurant, hence the play on words "Carlsbad Tavern." Great place, we luckily have a couple real good New Mexican style restaurants here in AZ.

BB, I'd say yours looks pretty damn tasty, esp. since it is from the famous Owl Bar, gotta be good!

I know it's "Green Chili", but is that a specific type of green chili? Should I visit the grocery store and they have an assortment of fresh chili's - what name? I'd love to make some burgers, grill some of those chili's, and try it myself.

There are lots of different green chiles in New Mexico but you can use Anaheim chiles.

Oh, and be sure to roast the chiles and skin them for any New Mexican recipes. Toss them in a hot oven or roast them over an open flame to char the skins, then toss them in a plastic bag to let them steam and remove the charred skins after they are cool. Remove the seeds and inner membrane and chop them up or leave them whole. I would recommend melting the cheese over the chiles like Bobcat Bites does. Enjoy.

An important distinction needs to be made here, that we are talking about Green Chile (with an e) Cheeseburgers, as in from chile peppers.

Unless, of course you are eating one topped with Green Chili (in NM widely known as Green Chile Stew) made from Green Chiles....

Man, my mouth is watering!

Rayme, I usually remove the seeds and membrane from the peppers before roasting; is there a difference? I remove the innards, slice one side, and lay the pepper flat either under the broiler or over the flame (depending on where I'm doing the roasting).

My husband ordered a GREAT green chili cheeseburger at the Tic Toc Cafe in Lake City, Colorado. The whole burger, bun and all, was smothered with a wonderful green chili sauce. He had to eat it with a fork. He proclaimed it the best one he ever had. Sorry, no picture, but it was a sight to behold.
