Fred's in Burlington, WI

I agree with MFL's principles. I can see charging extra for cheese, everyone does it, but for onions? What The French?

I may be going to Mayo on 20th, 10 hour drive round trip & that doesn't include the time it will take to jump in & out of the MRI & all the other fun things. The next day is Fred's & it might have to be breakfast.

We'll be leaving Irish Fest on Friday night at about midnight; arriving back in Chicago probably around 1-1:15am.  It won't be an early morning wake up on Saturday, I can promise you that.  So, if we can do Fred's around 1:30-2pm that would be great.

Walworth County fair (http://www.walworthcountyfair.com/) isn't until September. Kenosha County Fair (http://kenoshacofair.com/) ends that day. Racine County Fair is over. Wisconsin State Fair (http://wistatefair.com/) is going on then, too, but I have to work on Sunday night, so Fred's it is.
 

 

I see the Haylofters will be staging a production of "101 Dalmations" on the 21st.

I wonder if they use live dogs.  Now if a dozen or so people reeking of hamburgers were to sit in the front row...clearly pandemonium and hilarity could ensue!

With as  much modesty as I can muster, I like my own Bloodys best; never had one I've enjoyed more.
When the Milwaukee Ale House used their house pickled hops as a garnish, I thought I might have found one better but with the hops shortage I suspect they don't have the hops needed for that.
 
Would you guys still eat with me if I brought my own sliced onions?

Aren't Mr and Mrs Buddy going to Irish Fest on Friday and Saturday? Or is a Sunday visit on the agenda, too? I'm planning on Irish Fest for Friday evening, and hope to see the Roadhouses there.... Also planning on Fred's for Saturday, early afternoon. I might consider a Sunday whirl through Irish Fest, but doubt I could go.

I guess I have no idea who is going when. Saturday is completely out for us.

We'll be at Irish Fest on Friday when they open the doors at 4:00pm.  We'll stay there until the last uilleann pipe has wheezed its final note.  We will drive home Friday night and return Saturday with a stop at Fred's at about 1:30-2pm.  From Fred's we will then head back up to Irish Fest, again staying through to the end.  We have no Sunday plans as yet, but will probably stay close to home.

If ya'll want to come on down our way on Sunday, we could probably put together a nifty day...

We are working overtime. Please have fun without me. 

I have a cousin that just moved to Burlington, so I can't imagine we won't go there sometime soon.

I'll have to get a "go" plate for Big Beautiful Mich, who will be working at the Kenosha County Fair that day. I'll bring the camera, though. Be advised, though: I bought it a week ago with my first paycheck from the new job, (sidenote: HALLELUJAH!!!!) and I still don't know how to use it as well as I should. I'm going to want to share some pics with BBM, obviously.
 
Retta works part time for a group of handicapped women who make various products and sell them. Google left me dry when I searched for the group, though, but I'll be back with more information as soon as I can be. That probably means next Monday.

I hope to be there tomorrow at 4 pm, though I may be a few minutes late. I'll be happy to rendezvous at any time and place there.... as long as I get my Boxty.

We'll be at Irishfest on Friday between 4 and 5. If we don't meet before 7:30, we'll be at the Miller Lite Stage, awaiting Gaelic Storm, which begins at 8:30, sitting in the front on the left side of the stage, enjoying a McBob's corned beef sandwich. Buddy, don't forget to bring yer wellies.

Bright blue skies with big. puffy, friendly looking clouds.  Should be a beautiful day for Fred's and Irish Fest.  Yesterday's rain was more of an annoyance than a day killer, but it will be nice to come home without waterlogged boots, and pants so heavy with rainwater around the cuffs they felt like they would fall down at any second.

Had a great time seeing everyone that showed up!
Burgers and apps were great, as usual....the one downside is that the kitchen seemed backed up, and we didn't all get our burgers at the same time. Poor Hello_Driver was the last to eat! His burger didn't come until most of us were already finished with ours. 
They also forgot our order of Parmesan potato chips, so we had to "re-order" them.

A great lunch!  Had the Fred's Burger, sorry no photos, and excellent onion rings.  Even with the delayed response from the kitchen, I would eat here again!  Great to see X1, the Roadhouses, and ChuckL50 and group!

It was nice to see you again, and I'm glad the burger, late as it was, met with your approval.

Since I couldn't make it, I might not be clear about what you two are commenting on but the Elegant Farmer at least used to have sugar-free pies.

I guess "used to" is the key phrase, as Hello_Driver went there yesterday after Fred's, and, as you can see, has reported back that there were no sugar-free pies.

Fred's continues to impress.  My roasted garlic burger, done medium rare was a stroke of genius!  The bite I had of Mrs. Roadhouse's bleu cheese burger was a tangy delight.

Fried pickles were even better than expected, but at $3.95 for four spears--not whole pickles, but quarter spears-- seemed a bit pricey.

The good food continued at Irish Fest.  Friday we chowed down on McBob's corned beef, boxty (a kind of Irish potato pancake), bangers (Irish sausages), and curry fries.  Saturday, after eating at Fred's, we were less inclined to eat.  We waited until fairly late in the evening to have Scotch eggs and some of the best Rueben rolls I have ever had.

Thanks to all who joined us for all or part of the day.  we had a great time and look forward to next year.

Too bad for me that I couldn't make it to Fred's, but I enjoyed hangin' with the Roadhouses at Irish Fest. And thanks to Buddy, I now know the wondrous music of La Bottine Souriante--truly a great band.

Now as Irish Weekend draws down, it's time to get ready for Mexican Fiesta. I've never been to it, but will pop in Friday afternoon. If the food and music are good I'll stay a while; otherwise, I'll head for the south side, where there's a Mexican Fiesta all year round.

It would have been fun to join you, but it wasn't meant to be.  I did stay busy with a charity climb for cancer north of Flagstaff.  We started at the base of a mountain road and walked 6.7 miles to finish at 8,300 ft.  Probably the hardest physical thing I've ever done.  I was already winded after walking 2 blocks to catch the shuttle bus in town.  The day did finish with some food at the Lumberyard Brewpub.  Excellent sliders with a cheese-skirt like at the place on DD&D.  Good thing I had a designated driver - the beer was really good and really strong.

Dear Contingent (and anyone else who would like to join us),
It's that time of year again; Irish Fest in Milwaukee is just around the corner and our annual Saturday lunch stop at Fred's in Burlington is part of our itinerary.  For those who haven't heard of Fred's, it is a small, family style bar in Burlington, Wisconsin, about 25 miles southwest of Milwaukee.  As you drive past the joint there is a big hanging sign declaring, "World's Best Burger".  Members of The Contingent will tell you, it may not be the world's best burger, but it surely ranks up there with the top five.
 
The actual dates of Irish Fest are Friday, August 19th-Sunday, August 21st.  We'll be going to the Fest at around 4:00pm on Friday to take advantage of the $5 admission fee (regular price, $15).  On Saturday, I reckon we can be at Fred's between 2:00 and 3:00pm (depending on how wild and crazy we get Friday night).  We'll then proceed up to the Maier Fairgrounds from there.  Anyone who wishes to join us on either day is welcome.

Friday's $5 entry fee (used to be FREE until this year) starts when they open the gates at 4:00pm and runs until 5:30pm.  After that it is the standard $15 fee.  Just want to make sure you don't miss it.

Fred's menu describes them as "Baby onion chunks with an attitude".  IIRC, they were onion chips dipped in a spicy batter, then deep fried (what else?).
 
Pretty tasty, as are most of the apps, but definitely not the main reason to go to Fred's.  The burgers are the big draw and rightfully so.
